Sunday after Ascension 1030 May 13 AD 2018

As they were looking on, he was lifted up,

and a cloud took him out of their sight. Acts 1:9

Sunday after Ascension

Opening Hymn: 163 All hail the power of Jesus' name

Worship continues on page 1 of the liturgy booklets. The Collect:O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph into your kingdom in heaven: We beseech you leave us not comfortless; but send to us your Holy Spirit to comfort us, and exalt us to the same place where our Saviour Christ has gone before, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.  Amen

Old Testament Reading: 2 Kings 2: 9-15When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.” And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and

Elisha went over. Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him opposite them, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 68: 32-35

32 Sing unto God O ye ’ kingdoms of the ’ earth : O sing ’ praises ’ unto the ’ Lord;33 Who sitteth in the heavens over all ’ from the be’ginning : lo he doth send out his voice, yea and ’ that a ’ mighty ’ voice.34 Ascribe ye the power to God ’ over ’ Israel : his worship and ’ strength is ’ in the ’ clouds.35 O God wonderful art thou in thy ’ holy ’ places : even the God of Israel, he will give strength and power unto his people, ‘ blessed ’ be ’ God.Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.

New Testament Lesson: 1 Peter 4:7-11The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has

received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks - oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in

everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: 173 The Lord ascended up on high [Tune 2: Nun Freut Euch]

The Gospel: St John 15.26-16.4aThe Gospel is announced, we respond: Glory to you, O Lord

“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. After the Gospel is read we say: Praise to you, O Christ
