PARTNERSHIP AND SPONSORS

The TechnoKats Robotics Team is managed by a partnership between the Kokomo-Center Consolidated School Corporation and Delphi Electronics and Safety.

The school provides student members, sponsoring teachers, the use of school facilities and resources, and bus and van transportation.

Delphi pays the bulk of the team costs for competition entry fees, materials, parts, and tools, covers student travel to regional competitions, and provides engineering mentorship.

The team has many supporting sponsors:

Duke Energy has provided a generous area in their warehouse since 1998 for the team workshop, meeting space, material storage, and practice field.

AndyMark, Inc. donates time, materials, and engineering mentorship.

TechPoint Foundation for Youth

Indiana Department of Education

1up! Software supports our website.

NASA grants have been used in past years when the team was eligible

Many parents and team alumni also contribute time and mentoring to the team.

HISTORY

In 1990, the Foundation for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology was founded. FIRST focuses on inspiring students in math, science, and technology fields through sponsoring a worldwide robotics competition. Many students and adults get very excited about competing in this challenging and fun atmosphere.

Kokomo High School’s robotics team has participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition since its inception in 1992. In that year, the Delco Electronics/Kokomo-Center Schools “DEKCS” partnership formed the Science Kats, one of 28 teams to compete in the inaugural FIRST competition. Since then, FIRST has grown to include well over 1600 high school teams in countries around the world. During this time, the team’s partnerships have also grown. Over the years, the team adopted its current name of the TechnoKats, Delco became a division of Delphi, other sponsoring partners have joined, and the TechnoKats have made a name for themselves in Howard County and in the FIRST community.

The team is proud of its history. It has a strong tradition of competing at a high level in FIRST while also being a model team in showing “gracious professionalism” as it competes. Its members have mentored many teams, both in Indiana and across North America. These teams and others in the FIRST community look to the TechnoKats as a model FIRST team, as they are a perennial contender for the highest honor given by FIRST, the “Chairman’s Award”. The team continually strives to uphold that model for how a FIRST team should be organized and how it should compete.

During these many years, the team has been led by the partnership between Delphi and the Kokomo-Center School Corporation, with increasing levels of student control and responsibility. The success and stability of the team is a direct result of the strong partnership between Delphi and KCS, and the dedication of mentors, sponsors, and students.

TechnoKats students have gone on to work as engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs in various fields. Alumni work in the automotive industry for such companies as Lockheed Martin, Delphi, and GM. Many work in aerospace, information technology, consumer electronics, and health care. It is certain that being TechnoKats played a big role in their success today.

More important than winning awards, students are being

inspired. Numerous leadership opportunities are present on the TechnoKats,

and the real successes are seen when students succeed in finding out how they can

make this world a better place because of the choice in

a technical-related career.

SCHOLARSHIP: REQUIREMENTS AND REWARDS

REQUIREMENTS

According to the student contract (see page 20), each student must maintain a C- or better in each course in order to be eligible for team travel.

Grades are a PriorityThis grade requirement is strict and is not trivial. Students should put their grades before any team needs. This grade policy applies to AP courses also. There are no exceptions, unless team leaders find an extraordinary situation that warrants the exception.

AssistanceIn order to help the students meet this requirement, study tables and tutoring will be available for students who are in need of help. Students should depend on team mentors for personal tutoring assistance if needed.

REWARDS

There are many potential rewards for TechnoKats members.

Scholarships Each graduating senior will receive $100 per year of

team membership (in full) as a college scholarship. This must include at least one other year as an active member.

More than twelve million dollars in other scholarships were available for FIRST Team members in 2011. Check out the list on the FIRST web site:

http://www.usfirst.org/scholarshipsInternships

Experienced TechnoKats are exposed and preferred for internships within Delphi and other companies.

Delphi has hired college-aged interns at the Kokomo facility.

Experience Many corporations across the nation are participating

in FIRST and want to hire FIRST students. Being on a FIRST team will expose students to these corporations and also help teach the skills that these companies desire.

FINANCES AND FUNDRAISING

FINANCES

The team is fortunate to have excellent sponsors. Delphi serves as the main financial sponsor, but students still need to pay their way to events, depending on their level of team participation and effort. There are many costs to the team.

Costs covered by Delphi:

FIRST Competition entry fees Robot parts and materials Playing field costs Portion of team uniforms Regional competition travel (various levels) Championship travel for engineering mentors Awards for team members Senior scholarships

Costs covered by TechnoKats not-for-profit “club fund” (funded by team, parent and student fundraising):

Fall project costs Student portion of FIRST Championship travel Non-FIRST competition costs

Costs covered by Kokomo-Center School Corporation:

Teacher sponsor contracts Championship travel for teachers Bus transportation (within Indiana)

FUNDRAISING

For the past several years, students have raised $100-$400 in order to travel to the FIRST Championship event. In 2011, the cost was $300. This year, each student can expect to fundraise as much as $500 to be an active member of the team. The primary fundraising project is the “Win-win” discount cards, with Kokomo area merchants providing special offers to cardholders. Cards are sold for $5, with $4 of the money going toward the seller’s account to pay student travel costs. See the student involvement section (page 17) for eligibility information regarding “active” members.

STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

TechnoKats students have many ways to be involved with the team. In the fall, they participate in the team events and meetings. Starting in January, students are required to become more active members of the team and really get involved in the FIRST program. These opportunities are available for students:

Team leadership positions Mechanical design Electrical design and wiring Software development Shop management, part fabrication and assembly Marketing, public relations and media publications Fundraising CAD and 3D animation Strategy development and robot operation Photography and videography

STUDENT MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY

Recognizing other activities, the TechnoKats accommodate various levels of student participation. Students must put in a certain level of involvement to be considered an active member. In order to be considered “active”, a student must meet these requirements:

Attend at least 50% of all team activities between January 7 (pre-kickoff meeting) and February 21 (robot ship date)

Meet team grade requirements Be productive on the team and comply with

TechnoKats “shop rules” Participate in at least one mentoring, demonstration,

or community service project*

Active status for all students will be reviewed by the end of January. Final status will be announced on Tuesday, February 21, as the active students will be awarded the right to compete as TechnoKats in the March and April FIRST Robotics Competition events.

* These activities and hours performed must be approved by an adult team mentor and by the receiving party (if necessary).

TRAVEL AND COMMITMENT DEADLINES

Only active team members are permitted to travel with the team and participate in team competitions. Remember that students must meet the team grade requirements in order to be active, as described in this handbook.

While traveling with the team, students will stay in hotels. There will be up to four students in each room, sharing two double or queen beds. Students need to communicate any special needs regarding travel to team mentors and the team travel coordinator.

Family members are encouraged to attend competitions with the team. They can either plan their own travel or work through team travel arrangements. If they are using team arrangements they need to realize that they must abide by the specifics of the team travel coordinator.

For the 2012 competition season, we plan to attend two Regional Competitions and the FIRST Championship. We attended the Boilermaker Regional on March 15-17, in West Lafayette, Indiana. We will attend the Queen City Regional in Cincinnati, Ohio. We are also attending the FIRST Championship event in St. Louis, Missouri on April 26-28. We are fortunate to be pre-qualified as one of the few remaining teams to have been active in the FIRST Robotics Competition each year since it began.
