Workplace documents

To increase the workplace literacy of furnishing industry learners various tasks in the Toolbox require reference to, or completion of, a workplace document.

At the Project index screen the Mentor directs the learner to create a project folder for each project. The learner is asked to place completed workplace documents in the folder to hand to their trainer.

Some of these workplace forms are completed as paper-based activities from information provided on screen. Other documents are completed on screen and printed as evidence of successful completion of the activity.

Downloadable documents include forms for recording details of customer enquiries and job requests, costings and quotation sheets, cutting lists and other documents relevant to the furnishing industry.

A list of all the downloadable documents is shown on the following pages and a copy of the downloads that are available at the beginning of the relevant activities are contained in Appendix 1.

These completed Toolbox workplace documents may be used as evidence of the completion of a task and as the assessment of competency for elements within the units offered by the Toolbox.

For convenience class sets of activity worksheets could be downloaded prior to training sessions. Alternatively, learners could be instructed to open and save the workplace document to a folder on the desktop. This allows for the workplace document to be completed on screen.

Blank workplace documents used in this Toolbox can be accessed and downloaded from the Workplace documents resource link. These could be customised or used as worksheets for face-to-face delivery.

Assessment strategiesThis Toolbox gives learners the opportunity to demonstrate various generic and specific custom furniture fabrication competencies via a series of stages and tasks in two distinct custom furniture construction projects.

By selecting specific stages and tasks across both projects, learners could demonstrate particular elements of competence within the units covered in this Toolbox. For example, an assessment strategy may include a learner completing all the estimating and costing activities in both projects and undertaking a trainer set task using the Calculations resource for content.

The resources in this Toolbox could provide learners with support materials and underpinning knowledge to complete trainer set assessment tasks.

For the units, Deliver and monitor a service to customers and Estimate and cost job, the previously described downloadable documents within both projects could form a significant part of the assessment.

In Project 2, Stage 5, Task 3, Present to customer and prepare quote, learners are required to work independently to research, source materials and cost the job. This task may be suitable to use as part of learners’ assessment.

The theory and background knowledge contained within the Toolbox for the units, Fabricate custom furniture and Construct prototypes and samples could be used to assess underpinning knowledge.

In addition to working through these Toolbox activities, learners will need to complete hands-on custom furniture fabrication and construction of prototypes and samples to meet unit performance criteria.

Preparing for using the ToolboxBefore using the Toolbox to enhance and extend existing training options make sure you are familiar with the tasks and activities you are presenting to learners.

Decide on the material to be presented and how you can use the Toolbox to compliment your training content.

Tell learners at the beginning of the session what you want them to do. For example, you may structure a lesson involving:

∑ a preliminary discussion about dealing with customer enquiries

∑ completing tasks 1 and 2 in Project 1 of the Toolbox

∑ locating specific information from the Customer service resource.

To prepare for using e-learning resources, familiarise yourself with:

∑ the content

∑ any print or downloadable documents

∑ the quizzes and activities

∑ the navigation

∑ the discussion starters.

Customising the ToolboxThere are a number of ways to customise this Toolbox.

Many of the project tasks are accompanied by relevant workplace documents to complete. These workplace documents are saved as Microsoft Word documents and can be modified.

Much of the content within the resources can also be customised using a HTML editor such as Dreamweaver.

Editing of the project tasks requires an understanding of Macromedia Flash and XML.

Information about customising this Toolbox and the file structure can be found in the Technical Guide.

7. Handling and storage

Handling advice: Avoid skin and eye contact and breathing in vapour, mists and aerosols.

Storage advice: Store away from foodstuffs. Store away from incompatible materials described in Section 10. Keep containers closed when not in use – check regularly for leaks.

This material is a Scheduled Poison S5 and must be stored, maintained and used in accordance with the relevant regulations.

8. Exposure controls/personal protection

Occupational Exposure Limits:

No value assigned for this specific material by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission. However, Exposure Standard(s) for constituent(s):

Formaldehyde: 8hr TWA = 1.2 mg/m3 (1 ppm), 15 min STEL = 2.5 mg/m3 (2 ppm), Carcinogen Category 2, Sen

Formic acid: 8hr TWA = 9.4 mg/m3 (5 ppm), 15 min STEL = 19 mg/m3 (10 ppm)

As published by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission.

TWA – The time-weighted average airborne concentration over an eight hour working day, for a five day working week over an entire working life.

STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) – The average airborne concentration over a 15 minute period which should not be exceeded at any time during a normal eight hour work day. According to current knowledge this concentration should neither impair the health of, nor cause undue discomfort to, nearly all workers.

‘Sen’ Notice – sensitiser. The substance can cause a specific immune response in some people. An affected individual may subsequently react to exposure to minute levels of that substance.

Carcinogen Category 2 – probable human carcinogen. There is sufficient evidence to provide a strong presumption that human exposure may result in the development of cancer. This evidence is generally based on appropriate long term animal studies, limited epidemiological evidence or other relevant information.

These Exposure Standards are guides to be used in the control of occupational health hazards. All atmospheric contamination should be kept to as low a level as is workable. These exposure standards should not be used as fine dividing lines between safe and dangerous concentrations of chemicals. They are not a measure of relative toxicity.
