Monday 24 June 2019 Term 2 Panui 2Growth Mindset Quote“Nothing is impossible the word itself says I’m possible”

From the Principals DeskWe are coming to the end of term and the next fortnight will certainly be ‘jammed-packed with exciting activities. The term has continued to function effectively despite the challenges of staffing shortages. Doing a balancing ‘act’ of working back in the classroom and addressing administration responsibilities has been demanding but I have been able to manage with the collective support of our team members. I take this opportunity to acknowledge our chairperson Peter Symons, our ‘budding’ Senior Leaders – Kim Rangihika and Te Waaka Konui and assistant principal Pratima Achari for willingly taking on extra responsibilities and providing me with their support in the absence of a Deputy Principal. I am also grateful to our teaching staff and our ancillary staff i.e. Personal assistant, school secretary, teacher aid, cleaning and caretaking team for ensuring that the school continued to run smoothly by carrying out their delegated responsibilities effectively and proficiently. It has been a busy term and the successes our students are achieving in their attitude in learning is a result of hard work and commitment of staff.

This week I am taking leave and Matua Te Waaka will be teaching in Room 9. Whaea Kim is acting principal in my absence and Matua Te Waaka is acting deputy principal. Upon my return I will be rejuvenated and focused, looking forward to the exciting events and challenges that lie ahead.

Board of TrusteesBoard of Trustees members officially took office on Friday 14 June. The first meeting was held on Wednesday 19 June. Congratulations to the following members who have accepted the following positions on the board;

Tania MaruTo our outgoing Board member Kim Rangihika, we would like to thank her for her commitment that she has shown on the Board. She is amazing – the ability to take on the role of a mother, a classroom teacher, Senior leader and a Board member clearly demonstrates her dedication and highly organised skills she has, to function effectively and proficiently. Ka nui te mihi ki a ia.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE CLASSROOMYear 8’s Leadership by Experience Programme

Boxing GymA fortnight ago the Year 8 boys ventured out on day trips to Eastside boxing to practice their skills with gloves on and to take in the words of leadership advice from Mike the Coach. They had a great time hammering boxing bags and came away with lifelong advice to respect themselves and others. Mike's ultimate piece of advice was Winners never quit, quitters never win.

Marae/Mau RakauLast week, all of our Year 8's ventured to Te Kauri Marae to practice mau rakau and take in historical information from Matua Jack. To finish off the trip the group took a tour around Rangiriri Pa and the first battlesite of the Great Waikato Wars. Next week... martial arts.

All this has been thanks to the effort, time and organisation of Winiata, John and Lisa from the Huntly Police and James, our social worker in schools.

Room 5 – Matariki Art ProjectOn Tuesday, Room 5 were able to refine their artistic skills by working together on their Matariki Art project with June and Tania from the Twin Rivers Art Centre. The theme this year was Tupuanuku. It was a challenging ordeal for many students as they needed to trace detailed shapes and blend colours of paint but their positive attitudes and willingness to learn created some excellent results. We look forward to seeing the final result.

ROOM 8 –Gaming RageThe gaming rage is real in Rm 8. Fact or fiction, I’m sure these stories resonate with a few whanau! Rm 8 have been learning to add awesome language features into their writing like similes (comparisons) and onomatopoeia (sound words). Ka mau te wehi tamariki!

Before & After School CareWe have been approached to look into a service that may provide care/supervision for our NPS students before and after school. We would like to gauge further interest in this service and would like to hear from whanau who may need this at our school, as well as whanau who may be able to set up and provide this service at our school. Please email: [email protected] (or somebody else's email here)or share your thoughts on the school facebook post when it pops up.

HOPUHOPU SCHOOL BUS PETITIONThe school and parents/caergivers of our tamariki living in Hopuhopu village have taken action against the Minstryof Education and GOBUS for this

MASSIVE SAFETY ISSUEAfter 55 years Ministry of Education/GOBUS changed the bus stop

at the end of 2018.

SHAKUR SHALIAS(aged 15) (aged 5)

Formal letters have been written to the ‘powers that be’. We are grateful for the immediate response from the Waikato District council mayor who assessed the location and then wrote to Ministry of Education expressing their serious concerns too. Petitions are currently circulating (one is at the office). We encourage whanau and the wider community to please support our ‘fight’ to keep our tamariki safe by signing your name to it. Other actions are being organised and we are confident our plea will be heard.
