Text to speech software
Open TextHELP on the library computers from the Swansea Universtiy Unified Desktop:
Folder : Assistive Technology
Progran : Read and Write 9
The program will open with the toolbar at the top of your screen:
If your toolbar doesn’t look like this, click on the textHELP logo, until it does
Reading Text Aloud
There are three different ways to access text:
1. Reading Aloud from the Web / Word Documents 2. Reading Aloud from a locked document such as a pdf. Or e-book. 3. Reading Aloud from a scanned document – possible in Lib?
Reading Aloud from Web / Word Documents
To change the speech settings (speed / tone / voice)
Select the down arrow next to the play button Select ‘Speech Options’ Made your preferences
You can also access a video tour from this menu
Once you have made your preferences, you can highlight text and hear it read aloud (don’t forget your headphones!)
Reading Aloud from Locked Documents
To access pdf. / e-books / any other document that textHELP can’t read – use the screen shot tool
Don’t forget a video tutorial is available in the menu
(found by clicking on the down arrow next to the icon)
Use this tool to draw a box around the text you wish to hear read-aloud
