GUIDELINES FOR SIZING AND ORDERING OF FLAK JACKETS

Background

It is important to ensure individuals are correctly measured to ensure that the flak jacket issued provides them the optimum fit and protection.

The flat Jackets under UNICEF LTAs 42105734 and 42105768 are generally supplied on a ‘Pool’ issue basis. The individual line items in the LTA designate the sizes that will be issued to male and female end users for each specific size.

However, it would assist end users if prior to generating a purchase order, they gather as much information on individual sizes as possible through measuring. Utilising this data, each country office can then decide the appropriate quantity of each size range (Male and Female) to be ordered. This will ensure that the flak jackets fit the greatest number of individuals who require them.

Step by step measuring guidelines are shown in the measuring charts from both Jack Ellis and Aegis included at the end of this technical bulletin.

For those individuals who do not fit into the general size range, then ‘Special Measure’ flak jacket can be supplied, providing an individual measuring chart is filled in and supplied at the time of order using a U material number U369701 when raising the SO.

The image below shows the area of protection required by the standards (UK & US) to ensure the vital organs are protected.

Description of the female flak jacket sizes in the LTA and Supply Catalogue (B & D Cup)

The UNICEF LTAs designates female armour sizes by the measurement of the fullest part of the bust area, and designating such measurement into ‘B or D' cup sizes.

However, armour panels are not cup shaped, due to the panel's flat shape. Therefore the ‘cup’ fit is created by ensuring the correct adjustment that gives the best fit at both the shoulder and waist.

It is recommended to get the individual chest measurement around the fullest part of the bust, to determine which ‘generic’ size is best to order.
