FSU Football Players Ball

Outby: Rai’quan Ruth

FSU had 30 players to get suspended for not spending their school money only on books.

So, to start off the running back say’s that he and some team mates bought books and then they had left over money and the store Clerk said for them to spend the money because they would not get the money back. So they bought pencils, binders, and electronic with the left over money.

“I decided to ask a few of our students about this, and this is what they had to say.”

“He think it’s stupid because the kids should be able to spend their money however they want” -Malcolm Eilane

“It’s is stupid because they brought school item for themselves so they should get a different consequence”-Brandon Miller

College and

Professional Soccer

My name is Mariam Roman Marin and I will cover college and professional Soccer. I will be talking about what goes around the world, and in different areas that have to do with soccer.

Megan Rapinoe Joins Forces with

Colin Kaepernick

By Mariam Roman

Before I get to the real meat of the story, here is the backstory. The National Anthem contains verses that some consider to be racist. “No refuge could save the hireling and slave,” is one of the verses that stand out. It talks about how people of color were slaves during a terrible past that no one would like to remember.

Megan Rapinoe agreed with Mr. Kaepernick, a quarterback for the 49er’s, because she also felt like the US National anthem oppressed people of color. Many people do not think the national anthem is racist because the interpretation is different for others. What side do you choose? Let us know?

College or Nah?

By Cecilia Okafor

Welcome to the Lifestyle column. My name is Cecilia Okafor and I am one of the writers for this column. It is my hope that while reading this column I give you new perspectives on college.

Why do we need a college degree?

College is a great opportunity to further your education. Some would ask, “What is the purpose of college?” The Pew Research Center interviewed Americans over the age of 18. 47% said that the main purpose of a college education is to teach work related skills and knowledge, 39% said that college is an opportunity for students to grow personally and intellectually, and 12% said the time spent in college should be dedicated to both pursuits.

What impact can college have on your lifestyle?

A college degree increases your depth of employment. The Pew Charitable Trust indicated that people who received their associate and bachelor degree were more

likely to get jobs. Also, find new jobs in economic recessions. Research shows that obtaining a college degree increases your potential for financial stability. BLS noted that weekly median pay for a person with a high school diploma was drastically lower than those at the associate and bachelor level. College degrees can also assist with your choice of jobs. The average American with a high school diploma typically works various fast food jobs, retail work, postal services, or custodial jobs. Having a college degree can assist in finding better jobs that suit your desired career, and are higher paying.

How can college change people?

Attending college, whether it be living on campus or not, may be a big adjustment. Students can get a chance to grow socially and intellectually. College provide students the exposure to a diverse group of people that increase cultural awareness and appreciation. College can also groom students in the profession that they are majoring in. Students will walk away with valuable skills they will use for their personal and professional career. I spoke with Ja’Nia Barber, an 11th grader at Winston Salem Preparatory Academy, on her take on college. “I feel that college is a great opportunity to help people prepare in the career they want to go in.” I asked her

what she thought were the advantages and disadvantages of attending college, and not attending college. Ja’Nia stated, “If you decide to go to college, you’ll have a better opportunity in being successful.” I also spoke with Nadia Jenkins an 11th grade student at Winston Salem Preparatory Academy about how she felt about college. “I feel that college is a great way to get an education after high school.” She also stated that, “college allows for bigger opportunities in the work field.”

How do I feel?

I feel that college is very important because furthering your education will certainly benefit you in the future. Going to college allows you to have opportunities in the work force, and teaches responsibility. You’ll get a new experience living on campus, and interacting with a diverse group of people. With the help of an advisor, you’ll get to design your schedule, and choose a major of your choice. I think the biggest advantage of attending college is that it gives one great tools that can be used in the future. The biggest disadvantage concerning college is that there is a large amount of money required to finance college. This can cause a great deal of stress for some people. I would like to attend college right after I graduate from high school. My goal is to major in journalism or communication.

Are High School

Relationships Worth It?

By: Nijayuana Gadson

Wassup y’all! It’s your girl Ni and I’m here to talk to you about relationships. You know it is “cuffing” season now! So, keep calm and read this article.

For starters, you need to know that relationships are a delicate topic with any age group. However, it is during the high school years that relationships are often overlooked and deemed to not be important. Studies show that the minds of adolescents are not fully developed and can’t know what is or isn’t beneficial in terms of romanticism. But Ni’s study states: We know what we know and we do what we do!! Speaking out of experience, I am not certain of whether high school relationships are worth it or not. However, it is a question that we all have. Is a high school relationship honestly worth it? Many individuals who have never experienced a high school relationship, ends up finding themselves debating against whether or not they should take the time to have something serious or just explore. Studies show that most of the time, high school relationships do not last. But Ni’s study show, We Grown!! Although these relationships may not last, it doesn’t mean we all will not learn some valuable lessons from them. This week I went around the school, and asked many of you how you all felt about relationships in high school. La’ Niya Reid, a senior, stated: “Yes I do think relationships in high school are worth it. For one, you learn from your mistakes. It

may workout or it may not. But at the same time, once you get to college you are going to know what to settle for and what not to settle for”. Chaz Gwyn, a sophomore, stated: “Yes I do think relationships in high school are worth it. It helps you realize what type of person you would like to date when you are older.” Justice Goodloe, a junior, also stated: “Yes I do think relationships in high school are worth it. Even though you might not date many people, until you find the one girl that you love and care about. That shows you the type of person you would want to be with when you're older.”

These are just a few of the responses that I received through interviewing. Several of you were willing to voice your opinion as well!

Now for those of you who have never had a boyfriend or girlfriend. Here are some tips on trying to get there. For starters, to all my gentlemen, if you want to impress the girl you like without making her feel awkward, try telling her she looks nice today. Even though you think she looks nice every day. It’s always the thought that counts.

For my ladies, if you see a guy you like walking down the hallway, say “Hey!” to him. You should try to become his friend. Don’t ever try to be something you are not to try to impress him [BSL2] .Remember to always be yourself no matter what.

My final tip of the day, for both my ladies and gents, is that wanting a girlfriend or boyfriend is a want not a need! Always remember school work comes first. You should always stay focused. Don’t ever let a boy or girl affect, your ability to learn.

Just remember to stay in school and look cute for no apparent reason. Talk to you later!!

Quote of the month “Every tall person needs a short person”.

Style WaveThis is Oceann with your monthly fashion update. The fall weather is

here! Has there been days were you been through not knowing what to wear in the morning? Well, with the

fall weather coming up here are some ideas to help you look glamorous for

the fall weather!

Autumn Trends to Try

The beginning of fall is here and the temperature will soon drop. Before it drops dramatically you still can wear your cute dresses and tops.

There’s a lot of new styles coming in for the autumn. For a day when you may want to get extra dressed up, a cute loose or body-con dress with some 2 to 3in chunky heeled booties or gladiator flats will do. As we know, not everyone is the dress and heels type. So, if you’re not then even going with jeans and a cute blouse, shirt with heels or even regular mid-calf or knee high boots will do for a casual day. Other trendy items to wear is trench coats, the flare pants, long pleated skirts (looks like the old poodle skirts), casual long sleeve shift dresses, body/jumpsuits, long or short knit sweaters, crepe sailor pants, knee high boots, booties, chunky heels, closed toed flat, long sleeve crop top, sweater crop tops. Another important thing in clothing is patterns. Pattern

pants or dress with a solid top or shoe is a nice match up, as long as you don’t match up too many crazy patterns that throws off the outfit. Accessories are also big on outfits. Add a scarf, purse, a nice cardigan or even a knit headband to compliment your outfit. Match up some of these things and get a cute fall outfit.

Remember everyone can be cute in their own way. Just because the summer is over does not mean you can’t be cute as the weather gets cold.

Pick your COLOR

Of course with cute clothes you must pick the RIGHT colors. We know all the basic colors that are good for the fall like black or brown. What about trying colors like olive green, burgundy, and a tawny brown a cute beige, an amber, and orange! If you know that you usually have a clothes of the same ole colors mix it up! If you’re the type who like to change your hair for the season some good hair colors for the upcoming seasons are auburn (reddish orange), burgundy, dark brown, jet black, red. Some of these colors can even go great for a lipstick, but be sure they match your complexion. If you’re a darker tone don’t go to light and if you choose a brown make sure it’s not too

close to your skin color and for if you’re light pale-ish white don’t go to dark as well.

You’re Style students of the

month! Each month a male and female

student of Winston Salem Prep gets interviewed about their style in clothing, hair, shoes, nails or makeup. To start off our school year I interviewed La’Niya Reed and Melvin Baity. I asked La’Niya and Melvin a couple of question on their style. La’Niya Reed is a senior at WSPA with her own style to sum it all up La’Niya said “my style is funky an upbeat, um style I most likely just, I want to be different I put different things together and make it look right.” I asked La’Niya about any celebrities who inspired her, La’Niya said, “No, I don’t know, I mean Rihanna has a good style but I don’t really watch television, but I would say Rihanna or Seveyn.” La’Niya stated how she shops at places like Forever 21, H&M, Windsor and websites such as Chic ME and WISH. She also said “most of the time when I shop I pick up what I like, I don’t worry about what other people may like, I go for what I like and how I’m going to look in it.” La’Niya said her generation does but doesn’t impact what she wears. She says yes because some famous people bring out the old ways of dressing that we may like so if I see something I like I may get it but use it in my own style

and then no because I don’t depend on our generation to pick out what I wear. La’Niya’s tips for you are “I want the girls to know you don’t have to cake your face to try and be cute, even if you do not feel you’re as attractive, a cute outfit can bring out a lot in you, under the make up your still going to be you only wear it if YOU want to. And for the boys get y’all life together stop being so materialistic, just get it together.” For the males I interviewed Melvin Baity, he is a junior at WSPA. Melvin is also an artist. When interviewing Melvin he said that his style is inspired by his older brother and celebrity ASAP Rocky. Melvin said when he shops he looks for “Jiggy or 90’s theme.” Melvin shops at stores such as Pacsun, H&M, but he mainly shops online. Melvin flat out said “no” about his generation impacting his style. Melvin’s final tips were “Be yourself, everything is fashion, swag swag.”

FUN MONTHLY TIPS Hair: For curly hair without

direct heat try wrapping your finger around your hair, taking a piece of alumina foil and put it around it the take a flat iron and press down on it.

Make up: For longer eye lash effect place a coat of baby powder or Vaseline on your eye lashes then apply mascara, apply another coat but wait 2 to 3 mins between coats.

Each and every month I will be coming to you with different suggestions and tips on makeup, hair, nails, clothes, shoes and some of the latest styles and tips. So be sure to tune in to this section of the new paper because you never know what tips will be available or if YOU may be a part of this section. That’s it! Style wave... for the month.

Gaming & Technology

In this section we will be covering the latest in gaming and technology. Anything from phones, to consoles to the latest games!

Xbox 1 S vs.

PlayStation 4 Pro

By: Tedarral Mitchell

Hello my name is Tedarral Mitchell and my article is about something that people have been arguing about since the release of these two consoles. Xbox recently released Xbox 1 S and PS4 announced the PS4 Pro. So the conversation that has taken place is which one is better and which one to

get. So, this article thus, is about the comparison of these consoles.

Sony is releasing two new versions of the PlayStation; which is a newer version of the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. The Pro is supposed to be a slimmer PS4. As expected, talk has come up about which is better; PS4 Pro vs. Xbox 1 S. So, I did research on both of them using In Game Name (IGN) and here’s how they stack up. PS4 Pro price is $399 while than Xbox 1 S has three different prices in the U.S. which are $299, $349, and $399. The second difference is that PS4 Pro storage capacity is 1 terabyte (TB) while Xbox 1 S has three different option depending on spending and they are 500 gigabyte (GB), 1 TB, and 2TB. The other difference is the controllers. PS4 Pro has updated DualShock 4 and Xbox 1 S controllers are just slimmer.

Another difference of the consoles are the games. Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox 1 S support all the games designed for the PS4 and Xbox 1 S. Same applies to the newer games like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and NBA 2K17. They will all get HDR (high dynamic range) support. The next difference is the consoles performance, the performance difference between the PS4 Pro and the Xbox 1 S is pretty huge. And that may affect your decision on which one to get.

The Xbox One S is really the same as Xbox 1 in terms of specifications but it’s just smaller. Meanwhile, the PS4 pro has some performance boosts and entirely new hardware. It’s twice as powerful as the PS4 at certain things like download speed and uploading.

Lastly, one of the major comparisons are the sizes of the two consoles. The PS4 pro is significantly wider than the Xbox 1 S where the 1 S is longer but slightly thinner. So in conclusion whatever one you choose it’s up to you. Or, if you prefer, you could wait for the Xbox Scorpio, whatever that is released.

eBy: Rico Hough

SonySony has finally unveiled the new PS4 Pro, It used to known as the PS4 Neo. While the company says it isn't an entirely new console generation, it does bring a host of upgrades to the table. With the new PS4 (pro) you can get closer to your game than ever. It heightens your experiences with the enriched

adventures. The graphics with the vivid headset are spectacular with the real world experience. On the other hand it is basically a slimmed down version of the original PS4

Microsoft

Microsoft has made a new Xbox, only it's not entirely new. The Xbox One S is a 0.5 upgrade to the existing Xbox One, rather than its successor. While the Xbox One S is the same console Microsoft released in 2013, there have been super changes. It’s far slicker and prettier, fixing many of the original console's aesthetic issues. It also adds 4K and high dynamic range, which means your games and videos can make the most of the latest TVs. It doesn’t offer the big graphical bump of the newly announced PS4 Pro.

I-Phone 7

My name is Dasean Thomas and I’m a journalist for the Monthly Flame. My goal is to make sure I give the student body information on the latest technology.

The new Iphone 7 was released September 16, 2016. Apple made few, but game changing steps into making the 7 better than the 6s. The 7 and 7 plus are both water resistant, and have duel speakers.

The game changing step that has consumers really debating on if they really want to upgrade to the 7, is the removal of the aux-cord jack. This means that you can no longer use your regular ear phones for the 7 & 7 plus. This also means that you can’t plug in the aux-cord into your phone so u can play your music in the car. The good thing is that u can use Bluetooth.

Previous Apple products already have the ability to use Bluetooth. So you can say that the removal of the aux-cord jack was a pointless upgrade to the 7 and 7 plus. The new earphones are Bluetooth ear pods that are cordless, or you can get the lightning earphones which connects to the charger port in the Iphone 7. The new camera on the 7 plus is still 12 megapixels, just like the 6s. But what’s new is that Apple producers added an extra sensor to the 7 plus rear camera. The 7s isn’t too much different from the 6s. I recommend that consumers skip out on the 7 and 7 plus, and wait to see what Apple producers are going to do with the upcoming Iphone 8.

Debate Columnby Aysia Greer-Parms

The 2016-2017 school year has finally came about and I welcome you to our monthly debate column. You’ll find it very interesting because we debate over everything! You’ll always see us debating over things that are educational and maybe even things not so educational.

This month we’re debating over homework. Should we receive it or not?

Most students agree to ban homework. However, many of them think that it takes too much time. “I think homework should be banned because it’s too stressful, trying to get homework done and then living a regular teenage life. We have work, sports and other things we want to do. Then we have to worry about homework.” Dasean Thomas, a senior at WSPA, stated.

Does homework effect your extracurricular activities?

Students at WSPA think that homework effects their extracurricular activities. “I be tired from practice and I don’t have time to do my homework. It takes too much time,” says Raiquan Ruth, a senior at Winston Salem Preparatory Academy.

Would you support a “No-Homework” policy? Why or why not?

Most students at Winston Salem Preparatory Academy would agree to a “No-Homework” policy but others don’t. “Students would take advantage of that policy. It keeps you on task and it helps you get a better understanding of what you learned that day,” said Ocean Bradwell, also a senior at WSPA.

Do you think you benefit from homework? Why or why not?

People think sometimes you can benefit from homework and sometimes you can’t. “Homework is beneficial sometimes because when I do my homework, it teach me things for when I go back to school.” Says Raiquan Ruth. Lewis, another senior at WSPA, thinks that it is not beneficial. “No, it’s not beneficial. I just be rushing through it because I don’t want to do it and I don’t learn anything.”

Do you think homework benefits your students? Why?

Every teacher thinks that homework is beneficial. “Yes I think homework is very beneficial because it allows them to engage in the work at home that they started in class,” says Ms. Wilkerson, one of the high school math teacher. Mrs. Hines, the psychology teacher at WSPA, thinks that homework helps students get more knowledge. “There is not enough time during the day to cover all the stuff we need to cover to assess the students’ knowledge ability.” She stated.

I personally believe that we should have homework because homework helps me study. It helps me process the information I learn in class, so I better understand it.

Let us know what you guys think. Do you think homework should be banned or not?

Positive Behavior Intervention Support

By: Oceann Bradwell & Aysia Greer Parms

Winston Salem Preparatory Academy’s 2016-2017 school year has begun. Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) is a new behavior system that was introduced to WSPA this year. In this system, students who behave well get recognized more than they usually would. PBIS introduced the infamous “flame ticket.” Teachers hand out flame tickets to students who exhibit good behavior. These tickets are entered into a drawing and every Friday seven tickets are drawn, one for each grade level. If your ticket is drawn, you get one of many prizes. Also with this system and the flame tickets, there are end of the month and end of the year socials/events. This might include an ice cream social, a pizza social or even a trip to Carowinds. Even though we think that this is a good system, we wanted to know what some other people thought.

We interviewed a new and old student and a teacher from the high and middle school. The high school teacher we interviewed was Mr. Middleton, one of the new gym teachers. Mr. Middleton stated that he likes the PBIS system and that “if all the teachers are on board it would really work, and that it gives them (students) something to go by.” He likes that it rewards the students who are doing good but he also fees that it is behaviors we should already be exhibiting. Mr. Middleton said he would like to see students being leaders of PBIS as well. The new student from high school that we interviewed was Aniah, a freshmen at WSPA. She stated that she thinks “PBIS is a good thing because it helps keep the students

under control.” She likes that the students get rewarded for doing the right thing but teachers need to actually give out more tickets. We also interviewed a new teacher and a new student in WSPA's middle school. Ms. Ramirez is a new 8th grade teacher at WSPA. We asked her about how she felt about PBIS. Ms. Ramirez stated that she “really likes the PBIS system because for the most part it seem to be working.” She says she thinks better incentives would be great as well. For example, she could give out more than just 1 flame at a time. She recommends taking some of the student’s ideas for the incentives. Jayla Dodd is a new student at WSPA, and we asked her how she feels about the PBIS system as well. Jayla said “it feels great” because “it helps you understand the meaning of FLAME and helps you with your education.” She likes that you get acknowledged for doing right and seeing others who are doing the right thing. Getting rewarded makes you want to do it as well. Jayla REALLY likes it and wants everyone to follow the FLAME order.

We interviewed old students and teachers, who knew what WSPA was like before the PBIS system was introduced. We wanted to see how they liked (or did not like) the change and if they see change in the school. Ms. Penn, a middle school Language Arts teacher at WSPA, has been working at Prep for some time now. Ms. Penn loves the new the PBIS system because it allows the teachers to pin point behaviors that needs to be address and also behaviors that need to be celebrated. She

thinks it is an opportunity to set standards for the whole school. There’s NOTHING she doesn’t like about it, “we are a working progress.” The returning student, Lavaryae Marshall, was interviewed as well on how he felt about the PBIS system. Lavaryae is a senior and has been at Prep since the 6th grade. Lavaryae feels the system is childish because we should know how to act as high school students in a school environment. He does like the flame tickets for rewarding the good behaving students. High school teacher Mr. Young has been a Science teacher at Prep for 5 years. Mr. Young feels that the new PBIS system is “EXCELLENT” and that this year’s start has been the best since he’s been at WSPA. “The students are behaving, learning and applying themselves, it’s a welcomed change,” Mr. Young stated. He hopes with time the students will be more engaged. He thinks that when the students see the events and incentives happening that more will want to participate. Middle school student, Zachary Cheek was asked to state how he felt about the PBIS system. He thinks that the school year is better than it was last year. He likes that it makes students want to gain FLAME tickets and do better as a whole.

Are you working hard for those FLAME tickets? Let us know!

MusicWhat’s up, it’s LW an in this article I’m coming here to talk to you about music. There has been a lot of hot music that has been coming out lately and making a print on the music industry. In this section of the “Monthly Flame” I will cover the hottest music and the latest news. Check it out!

NewsYOUNG THUG has dropped a new album called “Jeffery”. He was wearing a blue dress that people have been making quite a stir about. Some people don’t like the fact that he is a man wearing a dress. To me, it was smart. He had people in deep conversation about the social norms of men. How do you feel about YOUNG THUG in the dress?

Rapper JAY Z has been working on a short film that should be released soon. The movie is about the war on drugs. This is a perfect timing to release a movie about the war on drugs because of the problems that we are facing now with drugs. Jay Z has produced before, but this will be one of his 1st major projects. Do you think you will check it out?

Also rapper SHAWTY LO died in a car accident a couple weeks ago. He was known for his song “Dey Know,”which came out in 2008. He recently had his home going service this past week in Atlanta and it was live streamed. Shawty Lo is gone but will never be forgotten.

Pick up a “Monthly Flame” next month to be updated on the latest news for October.

In this section of the “Monthly Flame” it is my duty to keep you informed about what is going on around the world and even in your back yard!

LocalClowns No Longer Seen as Funny

During the latter part of September, the Triad (Winston-Salem, High-Point and Greensboro) were plagued by menacing clowns.

Clown sightings had been reported all around the United States, due to the exposure through social media. Although some of them have been reported as pranks, police officers have been forced to treat them as real threats.

Although some have considered it as a “silly” prank, several incidents ended fatally.

Recently, there haven’t been any reports on current sightings. However, it is safe to say, that dressing as a clown for Halloween should be out of the question!

Police Brutality in Charlotte, NC

Keith Lamont Scott (43), was fatally shot by a police officer, who was also African American, in Charlotte NC.

Shortly after, several protests, in reaction to the killing began.

Police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement has been the main topic of discussion for several Americans.

It definitely has become a major realization of reality when it hits this close to home.

What is your stance on Police Brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement?
