this display draws together historic and contemporary portraits

that record and affirm the bonds of friendship. Featuring a

diverse range of works, including photographs of Morecambe

and Wise and Elizabeth Taylor with David Bowie, the portraits

share a sense of the pleasure, comfort or stimulation

experienced in the company of friends. Alongside recently

acquired photographs, including George Harrison with Ravi

Shankar, is the earliest known oil self-portrait produced in

England, Gerlach Flicke’s double portrait with the pirate Henry

Strangwish, which was painted in 1554 when the pair were

imprisoned in the Tower of London.

Bobby Moore: First Gentleman of English Football

The England football team won their first and only World Cup

victory in 1966, defeating West Germany 4 -2 in a tense final at

Wembley Stadium. The famous image of England’s captain,

Bobby Moore, lifting the Jules Rimet trophy cemented Moore

as the embodiment of a golden period in English football.

This display celebrates Bobby Moore (1941 – 1993), a sporting

icon who inspired a generation of footballers and fans. Vintage

prints recently acquired by the Gallery provide an insight into

the professional and personal life of one of England’s best-loved

sporting heroes.
