There is no single ‘right’ way to compose an image. It is up to you to decide and think about what you’re trying to say with your image. There are some fundamental rules of composition: Leading Lines Leading lines is tool used to create a meaningful compositions and composition is the key to all successful images. It’s your job as the author of your pictures to ‘tell’ the viewer how they should look at it. Looking at a photograph is a very physical thing, your eye should move across the image rather than stay still and you have to guide the viewer’s gaze. Frame within a Frame Framing is simply using other objects in your photograph to frame the main subject. Framing brings more depth to the picture and a better focus on what the main subject is. You can be quite creative with your framing, whether it be a very literal frame, environmental, or structural framing, framing with light or lack of light, they all work well to bring the viewer’s eye to your subject.

Basic Composition TechniquesComposition refers to how you choose to arrange objects and shapes within your frame, with any subject matter. There is no single ‘right’ way to compose an image. It is up to you to decide and think about what you’re trying to say with your image.

Rule of Thirds

Mentally divide up your image in 3rds, both horizontally and vertically. Position the important elements in your scene along the lines, or at the points where they meet and crop in the camera.
