Called to beA People of Hope

Notes for Staff

To begin this module it would be helpful to remind pupils about their work on the Bible. If you look at the stories of Jonah there is a danger that if pupils see them as literally true they will focus on the wrong aspects of the story. When looking at the story of Jonah the point about the story isn’t the whale, the story is about how: Please note I have not included here the Baptism of Jesus by John or the call of the first 4 disciples. This is partly because I have included the story of Jonah as someone called by name and also because the Baptism of Jesus and the call of the disciples occurs in other parts of the syllabus. However this is only a suggested approach please feel free to adapt.

a) God is concerned about the people of Nineveh they don’t believe in Him but God still cares about them, even though they do the wrong things- We need to be there and help others even people we don’t know and who are different from us

b) God calls on Jonah to help. Jonah isn’t really a nice person he constantly moans and tries to run away from his responsibilities- God doesn’t rely on perfect people, God needs all of us to care for each other

c) When Jonah runs away from God his life goes wrong he ends up in real difficulties but when he calls on God for help God saves Jonah- God will always be there for us no matter what

d) When Jonah tells the people of Nineveh that God wants them to change they do but Jonah doesn’t want God to forgive them he thinks they should still be punished- The story tells us that God always forgives but it points out that at times we are not so forgiving we often want to get our own back or see people get into trouble

e) Jonah sleeps under the shade of a tree when he wakes all the leaves have fallen and the tree is dying. Jonah is upset. God tells Jonah if you can be concerned about a single tree don’t you think I should be concerned about the people of Nineveh-Jonah comes to understand that God cares about all people and that we should do too. Like God we need to try to show people how to live a good life, to remind people through our actions of how to live in God’s way and be ready to forgive each other when we make mistakes.

Engage

What’s in a name? Use the first few slides of the Power point to help you consider this concept

Watch the Story of Jonah. The best version of this because it doesn’t focus on the whale but on the meanings of the story is the BBC version. Originally this was on DVD but I don’t think this is available anymore. However it is available in 3 ten minute sections from You Tube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm9mzBOe360

should link you to the first section. To find it directly from you tube you need to put in BBC Testament Jonah AT1i . Alternatively there is a book called ‘Man on the Run’ by Tim Augustyn which could be used. If you use the story directly from the Bible you will need to shorten and adapt as you go along.

Explore and Express

1. Use the worksheets or similar to retell the story of Jonah AT1 (the element of selection is important here) (Ask the question of why Jonah ran away- some pupils will be able to link the behaviour of Jonah to our own behaviour. )

2. Learn what being a Prophet means. AT1. For those pupils who are working beyond the age expectations there would be an opportunity to look at meaning. In particular you could focus on Jonah’s prayer and the idea that even though he let God down he knew God would not let him down. Note even if they have done Jonah in year 2 this question would still be relevant

3. Describe the beginning of the Baptism ceremony. (See powerpoint).AT1 (Note they must understand what in general a sacrament is. If this has not been done before you must include this now) (You may want them to bring in pictures of their own baptism if this is appropriate or if anyone has a video of a member of their family being baptised you might want to use this) W https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD7kE8qUz5Aatch If you cannot show a youtube clip in school then you will want to watch this yourself at home. There are other clips but this one in particular talks about the importance of your name and the responsibility we have to creation. The video is just over 10 minutes long so you may only want to use the first part. (we will cover Baptism again so at this stage we are only looking at it in the context of being called by name) You must be very careful here not to suggest that we are only part of God’s family if we are baptised. God loves everyone, we are all in the image and likeness of God baptised or not.

4. In groups pupils create a poster called ‘God calls us to care for each other’ this should follow a discussion of how we can practically do this in school AT2i

5.

4

Jonah the Man who ran awayPut these pictures in order. They describe the story of Jonah

5

Jonah preached to the people in Nineveh

Jonah: The man who ran away!

a) Which of these words describes Jonah? Tell your partner which words you would chose

Happy A Moaner Brave Friendly Lonely Cowardly b) Do you think Jonah was a good choice by God? Would you be

a good choice?

c) Look at the picture: which part of the story is this about? Why did Jonah run away? Do you ever run away from doing the right thing?

d) The People of Nineveh didn’t believe in God. Why do you think God wanted to help them? Is there a message for us here?

6

e) God loved and cared about the People of Nineveh. Even though they did things which were wrong he forgave them. Why do you think Jonah didn’t like this?

f) Look at the pictures below

What is the girl doing? How is she showing she is caring for our world?

What is happening in this picture?Have you ever had to say sorry to someone? Have you ever had to forgive someone?
