Welcome to Shareville. This session has the following learning objectives: Through the exploration of the virtual world of Shareville you will experience a variety of interactions with service users who have a learning disability. You will have the opportunity to explore the virtual environment and gather information regarding good practice in working with service users who have a learning disability. Through guided discussion students you can discuss and share your feelings, beliefs and experience of learning disability. At the end of the session you will have an enhanced awareness of working with service users who have a learning disability and be aware of good practice. Activity 1.

These are some of the thoughts and feelings that can occur when we think about learning disability.

In the large group you will have discussed some of these thoughts and ideas. Is it something you can identify with? What other words could we add?

Instructions for using Shareville.

Shareville is a virtual world that contains scenario’s that you can watch and learn from. This session focusses on Elmwood House which is a community living setting for adults with learning disabilities.

Follow/type in the following link:

Then using your cursor pan around the environment until you find Elmwood house (new). Click on it. You will see the following screen.

To navigate around the environment hold down the left button on your mouse and scroll round. You can explore the environment and gather information as you go by clicking on the hotspots. Content that has interactive media has an orange dot, web links have a blue one, pink dots indicate readable content and green dots will take you into another room.

You can scroll round 360 degrees so make sure you explore the whole of each area.

These activities can be undertaken individually or with a partner. If you are working in a pair, go into each room and discuss your findings as you go along

If you were going on a placement where there are people with learning disabilities what could you do to make your introduction as smooth as possible?

How could manage this situation. Think carefully about how Caroline is responding.

Go into the bathroom. Watch the scenario with Steve. Outline what you would do in the event of a service user having a seizure.

If you haven’t already read some of the information about epilepsy that you will find in the living room. What are the implications of having a learning disability and epilepsy?

Activity 6

Watch making the bed with Janet. How would you help a person with Learning disabilities perform such a task in a way that didn’t compromise their independence or agitate them?

Go back to the hallway and look at the noticeboard. Then go into the office. You will find a number of resources in here for you to look at. You aren’t expected to read all of them. Do make sure you look at Death by indifference. There is a telephone interview with a member of staff. You don’t necessarily need to watch this as it is aimed at more specialist practitioners however you might find it helpful.Make some notes about things you can do as a nurse to contribute to providing good quality care to people with learning disabilities

This activity is to be done with all the members of your group at your table. So once you have finished put your computers down into the desk and work on this as a group.
