Spelling Practice

Often times, when leaving a telephone message, a person is asked to spell their name, their street address, city and/or state name.

However, at times, on these telephone conversations, it is difficult to clearly understand the letters on the telephone, (even for native speakers).

Therefore, it is important to use words that is common enough for English Speakers to understand.

Group Activity:

1. Brainstorm common words to assist in spelling names, street address’, city and/or state names on a telephone call.

2. Use the chart below to record the common vocabulary decided upon per the class brainstorm session.

Telephone Message Dialogue Scenario (Using the Modal “Can”)

Partner and Whole Class Activity:

1. Use a Highlighter and the “Can”, in Present, Past, and Future Modal Chart to highlight where

you see the use of the modal “Can” in the scenario below.

2. Use the following scenario to create a telephone dialogue. Use the “Can”, in Present, Past and

Future Modal Chart in order to use the different tenses from the chart. You can also use the

West Tile Company or the Sherman Tax Company Conversation for reference.

3. Be ready to role-play your telephone message dialogue with the class.

Janice was excited that, yesterday, she was able to order a new bumper for her truck on line! She was

still not able to believe that she didn’t notice that the white SUV in front of her had stopped at the red

light! Good thing her brother will be able to put the bumper back onto her truck. Only thing is that the

company sent her the wrong bumper! It can only be installed on a truck of a later model! She is sure

that is can’t be impossible to get the company to reorder her a new bumper and send her the correct one.

She certainly could make a call to the company.

1. Listen to the telephone conversations.

2. You will “pretend” that you are the person working at each company.

3. Please use the phone message pages to write down the message for each company.

4. Be ready to orally share, with a partner, what you wrote onto the message pages.

5. After you share with a partner, the class will listen to the telephone conversations

again for further discussion.
