Why do people put up walls? Urban Sprawl I will be able to analyze how urban sprawl affects people and the planet. The purpose of this is to be able to determine how and why people can use their surrounds in a positive and negative ways. Highlands- small mountains/ hills Urbanization- movement of people from urban to rural areas Favelas- Slums on located on the hillsides outside city centers. Set yourself up for Cornell notes Topic Notes 4 Regions: 1) Amazon River Basin 2) Brazilian Highlands 3) Northeast 4) Southeast Where are the highlands on this map? Highest, driest land in Brazil. Location of Brasilia- capital of Brazil. City population= 2.6 million Country population= 191 Million (Brasilia: planned city= controlled growth) Favelas Brazilian Highlands Slums located on the hillsides outside city centers Highest and driest land in Brazil. Location of Brasilia capital of Brazil 2.6 million people Planned city controlled growth Rio de Janeiro (14 million people) Sao Paolo (20 million people) **Unplanned, uncontrolled growth** Brasilia Rio de Janeiro Sao Paolo How did cities like Rio and Sao Paolo get so big? In the 1970s millions of people began moving from rural areas (farms, rainforest) to cities Favelas- Slums located on the hillsides outside city centers. People move to cities with nothing ($, jobs). Build a home wherever they can. Favelas arent official parts of the city -lack basic city services (electricity, sewers, education, hospitals) Living in a favela provides you less opportunity to succeed ($$) than in more established neighborhoods. Without opportunity, its hard to leave the favela. Without leaving the favela, its hard to have opportunity. Youre trapped! Favelas Brazilian Highlands Favelas in Brazil Video Slums located on the hillsides outside city centers Highest and driest land in Brazil. Location of Brasilia capital of Brazil 2.6 million people Planned city controlled growth Located on hillsides outside the cities. People move to them with nothing. 19% of the population in Rio lives in favelas. They lack basic services (electricity, sewers, education) Less opportunity to succeed Hard to leave without opportunity Startled bad Startled good As you watch the video, write down at least three examples of life that startle you in a bad way, or surprise you in a good way Favelas stay poor. Nice neighborhood stay nice. Brazil has the one of the largest gaps between rich people & poor people in the world. Like Mexico, the government is fighting back. BUILD A WALL Article Create a Pro/Con chart for walls being put around the favelas. Only take up half of your paper for this Pro = good things about the walls Con = bad things about the walls In a solid paragraph, explain your viewpoint on the walls being built around the favelas. Should they have built the walls? Why or why not? Make sure you are using plenty of detail to back up your opinion!! Do this on the bottom of p. 64 What do you think should be done with the favelas in Brazil? I will be able to analyze how urban sprawl affects people and the planet. The purpose of this is to be able to determine how and why people can use their surrounds in a positive and negative ways. Article Review You will create a comic strip that explains life in the favelas, with walls surrounding them. You must have at least 8 comics: 4 that show the view of those in favelas 2 of your comics must be about life before the walls were built 2 of your comics must be about the decision to build the walls 4 that show the view of those not in favelas 4 of your comics must be about life after the walls were built Comics are done IN COLOR It may be a good idea to do it lightly in pencil, and then go over it with colored pencil Markers are not a good idea for this assignment Comics have illustrations AND WORDS Your words should explain what is happening in each comic Characters are speaking or thinking in each comic The dialogue or thoughts should help the reader to understand your purpose of the comic
