VOLLEY BALL Dorr-Oliver was represented in the Intershy

city Volley-ball Championship Playoffs by a fine team from Westport who by vi rtue of an undefeatshyed season were the champions of their local YoMCA Volley-ball League They were scheduled to play against the Championship team of the Norwalk YMCA on Thursday January 3rd but because of the early deadlineforour first issue we are unable to report the results of the game at this time We at Dorr-Ol iver offer our conshygratulations to these men from the Westport Mill for the excellent record they have compiled this season The members of the team are Bill (Shorty) Talmadge Dick Weiner Bill Kilmer Bill Tasl Len Aconsky Bob Fiedler Russ Blair Hal Monsor Lou Cartsunis and Bob Van Note

DUCK PIN BOWLING The Duck Pin League oneofour most popular

activities is off to a fine start again this year with excellent bowl ing by both men and woshymen The schedule as in the past has been divided into thirds with 10 teams participating The first third presented a very tight race in which the Championship was decided in the last 3 games The Championship was shared by the Classhysifiers and the Si z ers The Classifiers were represented by Gene Zanelli Dorothy Ballo Judy Canale and Lou Russo Representing the Sizers were Carter Ferguson Edna May Mead Jul ia Wall ing and Marion Fuchella

In the scramble for individual honors Ed Piorkowski has been the standout bowler At this time he possesses a high triple of 3~7 and a high average of 105 Ed is also tied with Carter Ferguson for high singles honors with a score of 133

Amonq the women Julia Walling has the high

single score of 138 which incidentally is high for both men and women The high triple score of 331 is held by Barbara Wood and she also has a

high average of 96 This year a surplus in the treasury enabled

the League to hold a turkey rol I-off at Thanksshygiving and acash roll-off prior to the Christmas ho I i days The tu rkeys were won by Lou Russo and Jul i a Wall ing The cash award of 8 dollars for first priz e was won by Ed Piorkowski for the men and Barbara Wood for the women The se con d place

BASKETBALL

This year we had hoped to field one of the stronger teams in the YMCA Industrial League but our fi rst two starts have left much to be desired Handicapped by lack of height we were soundly trounced by a fine Telephone Company team by a 3~ point margin Our second game told the same story as we went down to defeat at the hands of the Connecticut Power Company team by 21 points

Although the margin of de f ea t in each of these games was large we feel that the team will improve as they become more accustomed to playshying together Our team roster inclUdes 5 new men

who are fine athletes individually- Don Ashmore who played basketball for Stamford High School Tony DeCarlo who played high school football

for 3 years Gus phillips who played basketball for many fine teams in the Board of Recreation InterCity Leagues Gary Gibson who has played in the YMCA House League and Mel Mahan who played baseball and bilsketball for th e Wri ght Tech High School team Last su mme r Mel was a

member of the Dorr-Ol iver Babe Ruth League Chamshy

oionshio Baseball Team Also on the roster are Howard Vecsey Manager Dick Allard our iron man who generally plays the enti re game Gene Zanelli our most improved olayerandhigh scorer in the second game Frank Fiorito an ex-Greenshy

wich High School Football star and one of our

top rebounders and yours truly Bill Ballo who

makes up in soirit what he lacks in ability

With this array of talent led by Don Ashmore

The teams high scorer we should give a much better account of ourselves as the season proshy

DUCK PIN BOWLING The Duck Pin League oneofour most popular
