The church of Jesus Christ is truly unique: It is composed of peoplefrom countless backgrounds, who have a variety of opinions on manydifferent topics—yet they are one in Christ. As believers indwelt by theHoly Spirit, we all belong to God’s family and have a specialrelationship with one another. We are spiritual brothers and sisterswho are called by our heavenly Father to live in harmony.

Unity in the church occurs when God’s children live in submission tothe Holy Spirit and let Him control their attitudes, emotions, words, andactions. When the Spirit rules each one, the goal becomes to pleaseHim in our interactions with others instead of demanding our own way. This is necessary if we hope to “walk in a manner worthy of [our]calling” (Eph. 4:1).

Some Christians try to function independently because that’s easierthan living in humility, gentleness, and patience with fellow believers. But we need each other. The fellowship of believers is an importantpart of God’s design for our spiritual growth.

Unity in the church requires a willingness to yield to each other for thesake of our spiritual family. This kind of self-sacrifice is fueled bygenuine love, which unselfishly acts for the good of another (agape inGreek). It’s the glue that keeps the body of Christ together and enablesus to live in harmony (Col. 3:14). When we hold tightly to God’s wordsand are knitted together in love, we honor Jesus Christ and have astrong defense against divisions and factions.

Dr. Charles Stanley

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the callingwith which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, withlongsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unityof the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as youwere called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, onebaptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, andin you all. Ephesians 4:1-6

Let’s Listen.

Sleepless nights keeping me awakeLosing friends to constant dangerEndless days of feeling aloneEven with people around, I'm still feeling like I'm on my ownPushing down my emotions, masking the real me.

Locked inside like a princess in a towerStuck in the dark shadows all aroundConstantly feeling as if my soul is being devouredAlways on the verge of a breakdown.
