Shad Darshana, Upanga and Vedanga-By Pt. Sanjay Rath

    OM GURAVE NAMAH

    Dear Jyotisha,

As usual there is confusion and speculation when the principles for the

    differentiation are not understood.

The word used is shad-darshana. Shad means six and darshana means to see or sight and refers to the

body of knowledge that illumines the mind. Look at the basics: What is the source of all light and life?It is the Sun God and the sun alone is the source of all original light that is adequate enough to cause

vision in the physical sence of the word and illumination in the spiritual

sence of the term. Thus, the SUN is the governor of all the darshana and shall illumine different paths

    to the same God.

Now, the Jyotish aspect: There are nine planets or nava-graha. Of these, the

nodes are indicative of eclipses or darkness and lack of illumination. They

tend to obstruct the path to knowledge in some manner or the other. Hence, in principle, they cannotrule any of the 'darshana' nor do they work for the Sun in this noble cause. Excluding the nodes, we

have seven planets remaining of which the overall GOVERNOR for DARSHANA is the Sun. The Sunindicates the completeness of the knowledge or the perfection related to any body of knowledge. Thatis why Jaimini teaches " panchame surya gitagya" where the gita is the crux of all the different systems

of knowledge to know Him. Having confirmed that the Sun is the final objective or the 'real' darshana,

let us examine the remaining six planets from Moon to Saturn.

    Shad-Darshana

The shad-darshana are the six streams of philosophy that a person (of some

intelligence) adopts in his spiritual path. In fact darshana refers to the

knowledge or peculiar mode of thinking as well that shall illumine his path to

God. The path to God is referred to as the DEVI or SHAKTI or the mother. In mantra-nyasa, this isSHAKTI nyasa is doe on the feet so that the path is not changed and this is the real meaning of the

    word Durga as derived from

"Durgati-nashinyai" or the one Who removes us from the wrong path and takes us to the right pathtowards God realisation. For example, the aspirants of Krishna worship Radha as the mother and when

Krishna takes the vesha of Jagannatha, then She is Gundicha or Vimala. Every mantra must have a

shakti and the nyasa of the shakti at the feet is important for the 'gati' or movement towards Godrealisation.

    Moon - Sankhya shastra

    Mars - Nyaya shastra

    Mercury - Mimamsa shastra

    Jupiter - Veda shastra

    Venus - Vaiseshika shastra

    Saturn - Yoga shastra

For the sake of good record, the five crucial nyasa are:

    1. RISHI at the head,

    2. CHANNDA/metre or vibration in the mouth (Gayatri/Matrika),3. DEVATA or deity (form or formless God as described by the mantra) in the heart,4. BIJA or the seed syllable that causes creation in the Linga (Brahma worship prohibited and

hence Shiva Linga) and,5. SHAKTI (Devi/Durgati-nashinyai/Mother/Prakriti) at the feet

    The shad-darshana are meaningless if

    (a) your head cannot reason clearly being enraged by rajas or depressed by tamas thoughts,

    (b) your mouth does not have the sweetness of the beautiful channda like the Gayatri,

    (c) your heart has no place for the few souls in this planet - what to speak of the omni-present

    Bhagavan Vishnu,

    (d) if your linga cannot create anything worthwhile for this samsara (world) and (e) your feet do not take you to the right people at theright place and at the right time for the

    right yoga.

Test yourself: List out the nyasa for the following mantra:

Q1. (a) the maha-mantra kirtana: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama

Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare; (b) Vasudeva dwadasakshari mantra: Om namo bhagavate

vasudevaaya; (c) Isana Panchakshari: namah Shivaya (d) Mrityunjaya Mantra, and (d) Gayatri mantra.I have given simple and well known mantra and this should be easy.

Q2. There are five parts of the mantra for which nyasa is performed as indicated above and these are

five tatwas. Match one tatwa to each of the mantra parts/nyasa.

Q3. There are five main deities in Hinduism. These are the panca-devata: Surya, Ganesha, Vishnu, Sivaand Shakti. Link each of the devata to one Tatwa, and then the tatwa to one of the nyasa. Why is the

worship of the pancha devata considered essential in Hinduism?

Coming back to shad-darshana, let us take an example. Can Jyotish be considered a shad-darshana, andif so, which darshana does it signify and how? Extracts from Vedic remedies in Astrology by this

scribe: " Some people have expressed the opinion that Jyotish is not a vedanga and that the word Vedic is a misnomer. The six important parts of the Vedas are personified as its feet, face, hands,

eyes, nose and ears. Chandas, vyakarana, kalpa, jyotish, sikshaand nirukta represent these respectively.

    1. Chandas-Feet2. Vyakarana-Face3. Kalpa-Hands

    4. Jyotish-Eyes5. Shiksha-Nose

    6. Nirukta-Ears

In the next stanza, prasna marga adds that since jyotish (Astrology) is the eye of the Vedas it is giventhe highest pedestal. Thus, there is no further doubt that jyotish is a vedanga." Thus, Jyotish is a part of

the Veda and the largest part as Sankaracharya has referred to it as the ocean of knowledge. As per the

list above, this should be ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter also rules the 'Akash Tatwa'. It is for this reason thatHarihara advises that Jupiter should be placed in Lagna at the muhurta when a person begins the study

of Jyotish. Thus, if a person is seeking a muhurta to start studying sankhya shastra, then the Moon

should be strong, or preferably in Lagna. A person should have Mars strong in Lagna at the time ofcommencing studies in Law or at the time of going to war, else the effort shall fail.

    Yoga

As a darshana, it refers to Hatha yoga and to Ayurveda which are related to

longevity increase and good health (ruled by positive Saturn). In fact Saturn

in the negative shows diseases and poor personal care for the body. However, the Yoga discussed as asubject matter of Vedanta in the Gita is different. Here, the knowledge of the Bhagavat Gita is ruled by

the Sun as indicated by Jaimini and also in the words of Sri Krishna. Here again, the Sun becomes theGovernor and decides as to whether the Yoga shall begin at all and if so, when. The Moon is the

sustainer of the Yoga as it shows the bonding between two. This has been explicitly stated by Kalyana

    Verma (Saravali).

I shall leave it here and let the discussion continue on Yoga continue.

At the feet of Guru Pandita Kasinatha,

    I remain,

    Sanjay Rath

Let me put the computation stepwise,

    Step 1: Compute Lagna(LG) and Hora Lagna(HL)

Step 2: If Lagna is Even or Hora Lagna is Even Sign then calculate degress in reverse "i.e

    from pisces"

Step 3: If LG and HL are same oddity then find sum else get the difference.

Step 4: If Lagna is Odd Sign the count in foreward or get reverse

The table below shows the computations for various values.

Varanada Lagna: Changes approximately 3 times faster than Lagna.

Varanada lagna goes in reverse direction for some values, but the speed in reverse (from pisces) is alsoapproximately three times faster than lagna.

Thus Varnada lagna, indicates third house factors. Just as Hora Lagna indicates 2nd house factors. As,

VL is three times faster than lagna and HL is twice fast as lagna.

The attached image shows the same in graphical format.

A detailed study will be given in Jyotish Digest.

    Step 1: ComputeLagna and HoraLagna

Step 2: If Lagna is Even orHora Lagna is Even thencalculate degress inreverse "I.e from pisces"

Step 3: If LGand HL aresame odditythen findsum else getthedifference.

    Ahargana - Days Since Creation

Jyotish Shastra associates us with creations in this world and to Brahma who is the creator. One of thebasic measurements in Jyotish is to count the number of days since creation. This is one of the

fundamental measurements of time in absolute terms. Days counted this way give rise to Savanasystem of counting Months and Years.

In Jyotish there are five types of year/time count.

    1. Solar/Saura: The Years measured thru sun movement (365.24 days),2. moon phases (Tithi cycles),

    3. Jupiter Cycle (duration in of Jupiter in one sign)4. nakshatra (apparent movement of a fixed star to return to it's position) are as per astronomical

    positions.5. Savana.

The years measured thru astronomical positions may vary due to the movements of various references. But, The Savana years are based on the actually number of days past irrespective of astronomical

    references.

Ahargana, Aha means day and gana means group or count. Thus, Ahargana means count of days.Counting from when?, Since the time Jyotish was revealed Jyotisha's keeps track of count from

    Brahma's day.

For example the count as given on say 2 May 1827 Wed is 714,404,096,641 days Since Creation.

    Note in Savana System,

    The 1st day is Sunday.

A Savana day measures Sunrise to Sunrise

A Month is 30 Savana Days.

A Year is 12 Savana Month or 360 Savana days.

Ruler of Day: Dividing the ahargana by 7 and taking the reminder can find the ruler of any day. AReminder of 1 is Sunday and 0 is Saturday.

For Example the ahargana for modern day "2 May 1827" is 714,404,096,641 After we divide by 7 the

reminder is 4 hence 2nd May 1827 is a Wednesday.

Ruler of Savana Month: The ruler of the 1st day of Savana Month is the ruler for the month. Forexample 2nd May 1827 may fall on certain Savana Month. To find the Savana Month a day particular

day falls on, Divide the ahargana into 30, Take the quotient. It indicates the number of months past.

    For the given date

    Ahargana/30 = 714,404,096,641 / 30 = 23813469888.03

the given date falls after 23,813,469,888 months have passed, it is the 23,813,469,889th month.

A Savana month has 4 Weeks and 2 days. So the extra 2 days plus 1 will give the day ruler of the next

month if you know the ruler of the first month.

Hence, after 23,813,469,888 months, there will be extra 2 x 3,813,469,888 = 47626939776 days plus

one = 47626939777 day will be ruler of 1st day of month The remainder to 47626939777 after dividingby seven = 4, = Wednesday.

Hence the ruler of savana month in which 2nd May 1827 falls is Mercury.

Ruler of Savana Year: The day ruler of the first day of a savana year is the Savana Year ruler. For

example 2nd May 1827 may fall on certain Savana Year, Which is different from modern notation of1827.

To find the Savana Year the date falls divided the ahargana for any given day by 360, the quotient willindicate the number of savana years passed, Ahargana for 2nd May 1827 is 714,404,096,641 dividing

by 360 we get 1984455824.00277. So it's since 1,984,455,824 savana years since creation and the1984455825th year.

From Aries or Pisces compute reverse/forward to get the varada lagna

The confusion arises in the last line. Some authors have used the temporary

intermittent value to find the oddity/evenness to make the decision of, whether to

count in forward or reverse direction. When you take the intermittent computed value

to make the decision you will always get the Varada lagna in Odd signs.

Since there is no explicit statement mentioning to use intermittent values, one need

not use it for making the decision. The only explicitly mentioned parameters are the

Lagna and Hora lagna to make decisions, hence the last value can be counted in

reverse or forward based on lagna.

Doing this we can get the Varada lagna in all the signs. Also the movement of the

varada lagna is uniform at about 3 times (40min/sign) speed of lagna(2hrs/sign).

There is another ambiguity in third shloka. To find the difference should we use HL-

Lagna? or Lagna-HL? or tthe |Lagna-HL| (absolute difference).

    Possibilities,

    1) Accept Negative Difference: Normally HL is always larger than Lagna, but when

we compute reverse HL/Lagna for the even sign cases the reverse can be true. So we

can try to use HL-Lagna formula with negative values.

    2) Take Absolute difference. i.e take HL-Lagna and make negative numbers as

    positive.

The above graph is using 1) method.

The above graphs shows lagna in blue line and Varada lagna in pink line. The pink line movesin forward(upward increase line) and reverse(downward sloping line). The yellow line indicate

hypothetical path had the Varada lagna continued in forward or reverse direction.

formula used for the above graphs is

    =MOD(720+IF(MOD(INT(Lagna/30),2),360-IF(MOD(INT(HL/30),2),Lagna+HL,360-HL-Lagna),IF(MOD(INT(HL/30),2),HL-360+Lagna,360-Lagna+360-HL)),360)

The next graph is using method 2).

The formula used for the above is =MOD(3600+IF(MOD(INT(Lagna/30),2),360-IF(MOD(INT(HL/30),2),Lagna+HL,360-HL-Lagna),IF(MOD(INT(HL/30),2),ABS(HL-360+Lagna),360-Lagna+360-HL)),360)

Observations using the above two methods,

Varada lagna is three times faster than lagna (40 Mins/sign) Varada lagna goes both in forward and reverse direction at the same speed.

Varada lagna can be in any sign. Not just in Odd Signs

The user can select one of the two methods for calculations. But, I think option 2 would be moreaccurate.

Nakshatra vedha chakra indicates which nakshatra obstructs other. The above

diagram shows the obstruction. The nakshatras connected by lines indicate

mutual obstruction. Usually each nakshatra obstructs another one, Except for the

centre ones (ruled by Mars Mrigha, Chitra & Dhanisht) which obstructs two others

    ones.

The above chakra is used in

Match Making: Avoid moon-nakshatra of the possible partners who fall

vedha to your natal moon. These nakshatra may bring badhakesha or

Ketu related trouble in your chart if it's badly placed in your chart.

Transits: Avoid starting important tasks when the transit moon is

Vedha to you your natal moon. This again could bring Vedha related

problems in the task. If at all you have to start workship Vinaayaka

    (Ganesha) before commencing the task.
