Rally Australia

Motorsport Information

PocketFacts

Flying Finns Down Under:

Half of the Rally Australia

events – 12 of 24 – were

won by Finnish drivers.

Juha Kankkunen is the most

successful driver there with

four victories to his name,

followed by Mikko “Mr Aus-

tralia” Hirvonen who won the

rally three times.

2016 Rally Aus-tralia is scheduled two months and one week – or more precisely: 68 days – later than previous year’s edition and marks the final round of the season for the first time since 2005.

Rally Australia Statistics

The old and new champions* Sébastien Ogier and

Julien Ingrassia won the 2015 Rally Australia to

secure their third drivers’ and co-drivers’ title in

a row back then. The triumph Down Under also

saw Volkswagen wrap up a third back-to-back

Manufacturers’ Championship. And, by the way, it was Ogier’s third

consecutive Rally Australia victory.

On his way back to the service park on 2015 Rally Australia’s Thursday evening,

the local police had pulled Andreas Mikkelsen over for an alcohol test in the Polo R WRC. Mikkelsen passed the test – the limit in Australia is 0.01 per mill by the way – without further objection. “I was just below the limit,” he said, with a wink.

Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets has already won the Rally Australia: in 2005, as François Duval’s co-driver in a Citroën.

Short and spectator friendly: Australia’s Raleigh Raceway hosts a Super Special Stage,

1.37 kilometres in length, on Friday and Saturday morning.

* Subject to the official publication of the results by the FIA.
