Pixels are everywhere. We sometimes forget that pixels are the reason why we see images on digital display monitors. This exercise explores that reality by investigating the natural order of a pixel and its rela- tionship to the grid. The idea is based on the simple order of orthonogonal origi- nality of grids and pxiels. The grid forms the parametric orders where the void spaces become the active cubonic device that illustrates the next phases of visualization through color and texture. The edge definition from this experiment from overlay orders to displacement and transformation will attain a spatial reality from one relationship to another as images get more complex. Assignment 1 explores the tectonic assemblies of pixel and grid. This process is the developable form that all images fol-low regardless of their parameters. Pixels are everywhere. We sometimes forget that pixels are the reason why we see images on digital display monitors. This exercise explores that reality by investigating the natural order of a pixel and its rela-tionship to the grid.

The idea is based on the simple order of orthonogonal origi-nality of grids and pxiels. The grid forms the parametric orders where the void spaces become the active cubonic device that illustrates the next phases of visualization through color and texture. The edge definition from this experiment from overlay orders to displacement and transformation will attain a spatial reality from one relationship to another as images get more complex.

Examine:Note the properties of the given board dimensions (11x17). You will be investigating images and merge them in Photo-shop to create a montage, not a collage. You will be using basic commands in photoshop to complete this phase before proceeding to RastorBator and Illustrator. The idea is to un-derstand how color, texture, and image size can have a direct effect on the overall output. Pixels play a major role in image dimensions, therefore it is crucial that your pre-sets are correct before moving on to the final production of this assignment.

Procedure:You will be creating a montage of several images (overlayed).

1. Explore potential images from recent projects such as paint-ings, texture, self-portrait, and/or animals. For this exercise, you will need a minimum of 3-4 images. Each image must be

at least 1000x1000 resolution. Anything less will reduce the quality of you assignment so pay attention to the image size.

2. In Photoshop: Open, New file, canvas dimensions must be 11x17 (inches) at 300dpi. Do not worry about reducing image dpi to 150 yet, we want to achieve the highest quality possible.

3. In Photoshop: Open your images into photoshop and prop-erly organize your layers. You may want to explore other op-tions for images such as Splatter paint texture, grunge texture, paint texture, and so on. The first image must be a self-portrait of you or someone else or a model. This is up to you.

4. In Photoshop: Begin to edit the images based on the tools we’ve explored:

Tools: move, copy, rotate, transform, layering, delete, erase, paint-brush, settings, blend mode | overlay, scale, and so on).

5. In Photoshop: Once you’ve completed your montage, save file as a JPEG and PSD format.

Example: 001_DM1_Montage_RD.jpg |

001_DM1_Montage_RD.psd

6. In Photoshop: Re-open your montage JPG file into PS5. Change image to Black and White. Then save file as a JPEG only as:

001_DM1_Montage_RD_BW.jpg

7. In RastorBator: Download this free copy of software and open file. This software does not install onto you system. It is a standalone program. Open the program and follow instruc-tions. Settings required for assignment are:

Settings:

Custom page size: 432 x 279mm

Number of Sheets: 1.0

Dot size: Between 3-5mm

Select your desired color.

File will be saved as a PDF. This is fine.

8. In Illustrator: Locate your latest PDF file (just created). Right click on PDF and open with Illustrator. Clean up the file. It should be 11x17 (279 x 432mm).

9. In Illustrator: New file, dimensions at 11x17. Copy every-thing from the PDF file you created and paste it into the new file. Organize your layers! Then insert all images you used to create your montage along with class information such as:

Title

Name

spring 2012 / ARCH 1353_SEC

Instructor name

10. In Illustrator: save file as PDF and AI format like below.

001_DM1_Pixelate_RD.pdf |

001_DM1_Pixelate_RD.ai

11. Print your file: Close everything down. Go to your 001_DM1_Pixelate.PDF file and open in Acrobat Pro. Print your file on printer 7760 or higher. Do not print on anything lower than that printer quality, your grade will reflect the quality out-put result. text
