004 dm1 assignment

archi-Collage spring 2011 ARCH1353 This exercise is an exploration of collages and vector lines. The purpose is to understand the general concept of a lineweight through extraction and abstraction of profile and shadow lines. This is a two part assignment because the first part will entail a collage of a building of your choice fol- lowed by the general concept of the building delivered in a vector-base output composition. Part 1: You are to go to the architecture library (9th floor) and re- search a building of your choice (only one building). You will be required to scan between 5-10 images of that one building. While scanning the images, pay close attention to material, details, and shadow lines. These buildings can be found in most books and in the reference sections. If in doubt or cannot find what you are looking for, ask the librarian. It would be rec- ommended that you refrain from using periodicals. You must write the call number down for any book that you use. Use the KIC SCANNER or the scanners next to the computers to scan the images. Save them to a discrete folder and prepare for the collage part. When you produce the collage, it is important that you ex- amine the building and reveal one thing that is consistent throughout the project. For example; in Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright, the overall structure has this horizontal quality about it because of its flat roof, overhangs, and balcony’s that protrude from the site. So one could assemble the collage base on horizontal movement as it become projected from the surface. This is a good time to use all of the skills learned from the pre- vious weeks and create a stunning collage using architecture. Remember, do not attempt to reconstruct the building, this col- lage will have a variety of “randomness” to the overall new composition you create. Assignment 4_01 Notes: You should have the following softwares installed. 1. Adobe CS5 2. Autodesk AutoCAD Architec- ture 2012 Layout 11x17 Printed drawings show- ing all steps of the process. Assigned: February 16th Due : February 21st Notes: Using Photoshop in the first phase. Refer to notes from class. dm | digital media 1 Notes: Make sure your RULERS are turned on by pressing “CTRL + r” Notes: Remember, to scale an image proportionally, you must hold down the SHIFT key as you scale.

This exercise is an exploration of collages and vector lines. The purpose is to understand the general concept of alineweight through extraction and abstraction of profile and shadow lines. This is a two part assignment because thefirst part will entail a collage of a building of your choice fol-lowed by the general concept of the building delivered in avector-base output composition.

Part 1:You are to go to the architecture library (9th floor) and re-search a building of your choice (only one building). You will be required to scan between 5-10 images of that one building. While scanning the images, pay close attention to material, details, and shadow lines. These buildings can be found in most books and in the reference sections. If in doubt or cannot find what you are looking for, ask the librarian. It would be rec-ommended that you refrain from using periodicals. You must write the call number down for any book that you use. Use the KIC SCANNER or the scanners next to the computers to scan the images. Save them to a discrete folderand prepare for the collage part.

When you produce the collage, it is important that you ex-amine the building and reveal one thing that is consistent throughout the project. For example; in Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright, the overall structure has this horizontal quality about it because of its flat roof, overhangs, and balcony’s that protrude from the site. So one could assemble the collage base on horizontal movement as it become projected from the surface.

This is a good time to use all of the skills learned from the pre-vious weeks and create a stunning collage using architecture.Remember, do not attempt to reconstruct the building, this col-lage will have a variety of “randomness” to the overallnew composition you create.

Notes: Visit the following web-site for examples>

http://localdistance.org/col-lages.php

Notes: Notice the composition-al structures and qualities in the examples. Some strategies may include perspectival as-sembly, point or “focus” assem-bly, or linear, horizontal, and solid/void relationships.

Notes: An important aspect of the collage is how pieces or images fit next to each other and what that relationship has to say about the overall com-position.

Notes: To cut out straight sections of images USE THE POLYGONAL LASSO TOOL!!!!

Notes: You will notice that in these examples, there are no blurring or erasing techniques used. Let the geometry of the building and your assemblage skills be at the forefront.
