Chapter 6 Exterior Finishes For Wood Light Frame Construction
6.1 Exterior Detailing 1. To this exterior wall section of a small dental
clinic, add thermal insulation, roof ventilation features, and a set of materials of your choice, to create a completely finished exterior. No gutters will be installed. The rafter ends are to be cut as shown, with the fascia and soffit attached directly to them. Label all materials. Many designs are possible. See the figures referenced on page 46 of the Exercises workbook for guidelines.

Review Questions:
1. In what order are exterior finishing operations carried out on a platform frame building, and why?
The roof of a platform-frame building is finished first, to shelter the interior space from rain and snow as early as possible. This involves first finishing the rakes and eaves, and then shingling the roof. Next, windows and exterior doors are installed, after which the siding and exterior trim can be applied, making the house fully weathertight so the more delicate interior finishes can be put in place.

Review Questions:
2. At what point in exterior finishing operations can interior finishing operations begin?
Interior finishing operations can begin as soon as the roofing, siding, windows, and doors are installed, that is, as soon as the house is “tight to weather.”

3. Which types of siding require a nail-base sheathing? What are some nail-base?

Review Questions:
3. Which types of siding require a nail-base sheathing? What are some nail-base?
Shingle sidings require nail-base sheathing, because the sheathing must be capable of holding a nail at any point, not just over studs. Sheathings made of sawn boards, plywood, OSB, or waferboard have this capability. Insulating foam sheathing panels do not.

Review Questions:4. What are the reasons for the relative economy of plywood sidings? What special precaution are advisable when designing a building with plywood siding?
Plywood sidings generally have lower material costs per square foot than other types of sidings, are usually cheaper to install because they come in large sheets that require less handling than smaller units of siding, and in many instances can be installed without sheathing for further economy. Care must be taken in designing for plywood siding to work out a suitable sheet pattern on the elevation drawings, providing for end joints between panels in such a way that the overall pattern is satisfactory and the end joints are flashed or otherwise made watertight.

Review Questions:
7. What are the usual reasons for premature paint failure on a wood-sided house?
Premature paint failure is usually due to the presence of moisture just beneath the paint film. This may be caused by painting over damp siding, or by migration and condensation of water vapor from the interior space of the building.
