    AIRBUS IHDUSTRIEPROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

This Document shall not be used as a basis for manufacture and supply oforiginal and replacement parts to AIRBUS INDUSTRIE unless specificallyrequired in a contract or purchase agreement .

This specification establishes the requirements and defines the necessaryoperations for the abrasive cleaning of materials by means of dryblasting .

    1 .2

    Limitations of use

This process is not applicable for forming operations nor for removal ofsurface defects .

Silicon carbide shall not be used for the cleaning of aluminum parts, nor alumina for metals which are to be welded . Clad or annealed aluminumparts shall not be blasted, except when specifically indicated in thedrawing .

Dry blasting shall be performed after any required dye penetrantinspection .

    1 .3

    Health and safety statement

This specification does not necessarily detail the precautions necessaryto meet the requirements of health and safety .

It is the responsability of the user of this specification to consultand establish appropriate health and safety precautions and the methodshould be operated only by trained personnel .

    2 . EQUIPENT, MATERIALS

    2 .1 Equipment

The dry blasting equipment is to be fitted with :

A device for entraining the abrasive in a high velocity stream ofair .

    -

Controls to regulate the pressure of the compressed air used forblasting .

A separator system to remove oil and water from the air supply usedfor blasting .

Means to direct the stream of abrasive .

    AIRBUS 1NDUSTRIEPROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

It shall be performed per PMS 01-01-01 and its purpose is to avoidabrasive contamination .

Part areas which could be damaged during the dry blasting shall bemasked prior to the start of the process .

A choice of abrasive shall be made to suit the material to be blastedand the operation to be carried out .

For information, Table 1 and Appendix 2 give a list of abrasives andglass microbeads and their sizes for dry blasting .

The relevant Design Authority shall determine the applicability for thisprocess, the use of other abrasives and the corresponding sizes dependingon the different types of materials to be processed .

    (1) Grit shall be used to remove the oxide after treatment and blastingwith glass microbeads (400) shall also be performed before performingelectrolytic plating .

The stream of abrasive must be directed so that the centre Line of thestream form an angle of Less than 45 with the surface for parts withthickness below 2 .5 mm, and use an angle of 45 - 90 for parts withthickness over 2 .5 mm .

During blasting, the nozzle must traverse at a constant rate . Adjust thetreatment time to produce the surface finish required .

    AIRBUS INDUSTRIEPROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

After the dry blasting process, the parts must be cleaned by blowingwith dry and filtered pressure air .

When the parts are not to be treated within 8 hours, or 2 hours formagnesium alloys, after dry blasting process, they must be protected withan approved anti-corrosion protection . This temporary protection may bepreceded by a chemical treatment, according to the following procedures, when required by the relevant Design Authority .

NOTE : Care must be taken in the choice of temporary protective where itcould be detrimental to subsequent processing eg . bonding orpainting .

The treatment may be carried out by one of the following processes :

    Passivation with bichromate solution 25 mg/L at 60 - 70 C for5 - 10 minutes .

Sulfochromic pickling per PMS 01-01-06 .

    Chromating per PMS 01-02-05 .

Perform an immersion in nitric acid (40 - 42 Be) 35 - 45% in volume, atroom temperature for 20 - 60 minutes . Then rinse and dry the parts .

    3 .6 .3 Magnesium alloys

    Perform an immersion into a chromic acid solution 160-200 g/L at75 5 C for 2 - 10 minutes . Then rinse and dry the parts .

    3 .6 .4 Stainless steels

Perform an immersion into the solution of Table 2, and rinse the partsin a bath of water Class B, according PMS 01-01-18 for at least3 minutes .

Subsequently, they shall be immersed into the solution of Table 3 andrinsed in a bath of water Class B, according to PMS 01-01-18 for atleast 3 minutes .

    Table 3

Quality Assurance shall verify compliance with the requirements of thisspecification .

The control covers the materials, equipments and the process .

All dry blasted parts shall be visually inspected . Check that thetreatment has been applied to the whole surface of the parts and thatthese remain free of grease, corrosion, abrasives and other contaminants

The surfaces must be uniformly smooth and they must not presentdistorsion, notches or other defects . The parts must meet the dimensionaland roughness requirements established in the drawings .

The type of the abrasive used, shall be in accordance with therequirements of this specification . Checking that the same abrasive isnot used for different materials .

Screen and clean or replace abrasives (alumina and glass microbeads) asoften as necessary to remove undersize material and contaminants .

Check that the blasting chambers are free of oxides which mightcontaminate the abrasives and that the material of the nozzles aresuitable and unobstructed .
