WHO DO WE BELIEVE GOD IS?

Someone once said, "it doesn't matter what you believe about God, as long as you believe in God." I disagree! What we believe about God is of the utmost significance. In fact, everything depends on who we think God is. If we believe God is a stern taskmaster, we will act from that belief and possibly turn into something of a stern taskmaster ourselves. Or if we believe God is a big teddy bear in the sky who does our bidding and supports our prejudices, we might more likely live in a lax and spoiled manner.

In the first reading today, Moses receives the Ten Commandments from God for a second time. God's identity is revealed to Moses: God is "a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity."

Is this the kind of God we believe in? If so, then how well do these words describe us?

Loving God, help us to know you better so I may reflect your mercy, graciousness, and kindness wherever I go.

KNIGHTS NEWS

Thank you Knights for your recent cash contributions to our "Baby Bottle Program". Individual donations can be sent directly to the Care Pregnancy Center of Lenawee, 308 N. Broad St., Adrian, MI 49221.

Congratulations and thank you to all the Knights who participated in our recent elections. The Grand Knight, Officers, and the Knights of Council 7832 would like to give special recognition to the outgoing officers including Deputy Grand Knight Ron Coopshaw, Inside Guard Doug Gillies, and Trustee Rudy Mirelez for their faithful service. Your contributions of time and talents to the success of our council are dearly appreciated.

Many Catholics and other Christians are suffering persecution and death in their homelands. As a result many families had to leave their homes and start over again. If you can help relieve their suffering, please send your gifts to the Knights of Columbus Charities, One Columbus Plaza, PO Box 1966, New Haven, CT 06509-1966. Kindly write K of C Christian Refugee Relief on the memo line of your check.

The Holy Father's Intention: National Leaders - That national leaders may firmly commit themselves to ending the arms trade, which victimizes so many innocent people. All faithful Catholic Americans citizens are encouraged to participate in the Fortnight for Freedom, June 21 to July 4, and hosted by the United States Conference for Catholic Bishops. Catholics across the nation are being encouraged to pray, fast, and act for renewed protection of religious liberty and to rebuild a culture favorable to life and marriage. For more information please visit www.usccb.org.

LET’S TALK LITURGYby Margaret O’Malley

We have celebrated 40 days of Lent, three days of the Triduum, and 50 days of Easter and now we return to counting or numbering the weeks of the liturgical year. We will be celebrating Ordinary Time throughout the summer and fall – right up until we celebrate the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe in November. When Ash Wednesday arrived on March 1st we were in the middle of the Eighth Week of Ordinary Time. As we return to Ordinary Time we take up with the Ninth Week of Ordinary Time. We won’t notice that until June 25 because of two Sunday feasts.

The weeks of Ordinary Time are not marked by major feasts or seasons – with the exception of Most Holy Trinity, Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ – but they have a character of their own. We celebrate the mystery of Christ during these weeks. It is a time for us to ‘unpack’ what we have celebrated during Lent and Easter, a time to grow in our faith, both as individuals and as a community. As individuals we hope that e a c h y e a r w e w i l l g r o w i n o u r understanding of our faith and be challenged by the scriptures we hear in a new way. As a community we seek to grow in the light and love revealed by Jesus and to find ways to share that light with those we encounter.

Now that school is winding down the summer months will bring a slow-down in many parish activities and ministries. This is not true, however, with the liturgical ministries. We will still have four masses a weekend – all of which need ministers. Please look ahead at your schedule and let Leanne know when you are not available during the summer. If you aren’t on the schedule during the rest of the year – maybe you could help out during the summer!

Godspeed!
