FM55 SERIES

Can I convert my hydraulic control valve to single acting by simply plugging oneof the work ports?While this will work, it will also result in a lot of heat build up within the hydraulicsystem because oil will go over the relief valve in one of the spool positions. Thebest solution is to either replace the valve or change to a single acting spoolprovided the design of the valve will allow it.

What is the advantage of using a control valve with a motor spool?The motor spool connects both work ports back to tank when the valve is in theneutral position. This allows hydraulic motors that are turning components with a lotof inertia, such as large pulleys or sprockets to freewheel to a stop when the valve isshifted to neutral. Without the motor spool the work ports would be blocked inneutral causing the motor to stop immediately. This could generate a very highpressure spike and damage components in the hydraulic system.

What information do I need to decide which hydraulic control valve is right for my system?There are a number of important specifications you should know to aide in the selection of a control valve. 1- Open or closed center 3- Maximum flow2- Maximum pressure 4- Single acting, double acting or motor spool

What is the difference between a pressure compensated flow control andpriority flow control?

A pressure compensated flow control will deliver the same controlled flowregardless of pressure as long as the inlet flow remains constant. If the inlet flowis increased or decreased the controlled flow will also vary accordingly. A priorityflow control will deliver the same controlled flow regardless of changes to theinlet flow or pressure as long as the inlet flow exceeds controlled flow demand.

I will be setting up a hydraulic system and need to determine what size reservoir I should use?

A good rule of thumb to use when selecting a reservoir is 2 to 1. This means ifyour pump output is 10 GPM the reservoir should hold approximately 20gallons. Some other factors that may have an influence on this ratio are thesystems duty cycle, operating temperature and environment.
