The SLIM AGM was held on Wednesday the 29th of March 2017 at The Balmoral, Kingsbury, Colombo. Mr Karthik Elangovan was appointed as the 39th President of SLIM for 2017/2018. The event was graced by a distinguished audience consisting of Founder Members of SLIM as well as Past Presidents and eminent members of all membership categories.

SLIM has been invited the EDB to develop a proposal on the above topic to increase exports and market the country as a brand. SLIM has formed a taskforce for this project headed by Deshamanya Lalith De Mel along with the assistance of Mr. Ruchi Gunawardene, Mr. Nimal Gunawardene, Mr. Dileep Mudadeniya, Mr. Ravi Bamunusinghe (Collator)

The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) engaged in a generous CSR initiative that involved the less-privileged children in society to coincide with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April.

SLIM with the theme ‘Smiles’ provided delicious and nourishing food, gifts and sport items to 20 less-privileged children at the Sanhinda Children’s Home in Watareka, Padukka.

SLIM staff, council members and the exco, teamed up to uplift the sleeping hall of the Home by providing curtains, new bedsheets,

pillow covers and repairing ceiling fans.

The SLIM team spent the day with the children and presented them with gifts. SLIM also provided lunch and tea to all members of the Home. Sports gear and books were also donated, making it a cheerful Avurudu for the little ones.

SLIM staff organized a mini-concert at the venue to showcase the talent of the orphans and joined them in a sing-along. The event was the first CSR project for SLIM in 2017.

SLIM conducted their first ever Staff Awards Ceremony namely “SLIM Star Awards 2016” on 30th June 2017 at Anantaya Resort and Spa, Chilaw along with the Annual Staff Trip. The staff was astonished and highly excited at the standard with which it was organized and formed lot of memories by witnessing the first ever “SLIM Star Awards Ceremony”

Many staff members were rewarded and recognized for their outstanding performance during the year 2016. There were several Star Performer Awards winners and Star Gem Award winners while the Best Performer of the Year won the “President’s Challenge Trophy”.

Mr. Anuka Fonseka from the Business Development Team won the President’s Challenge Trophy along with a Cruise Tour as the prize. SLIM had also organized Anuka’s parents to witness that very special moment and share in the happiness.

This event was another approach by which the existing Council of Management recognizes and appreciates outstanding performances of the staff and keeps them happy and geared towards the overall onward direction of the institute.

The 8th and 9th of July at Water’s Edge witnessed the judging of entries received by the advertising agencies for the popular Effie awards 2016. The final round came to an end on the 15th of July.

An official briefing for the Effie awards 2016 was held on 5th of July 2017 at the JAIC (Hilton Colombo Residencies). The meeting was conducted by the Jury Head Mr Imal Fonseka. The objective of the meeting was to give the judging panel a clear idea of the judging process. Mr Irfan Ahmed and Mr Tharaka Ranwala, the two panel heads for this year also contributed with their past experiences.

Advertising Agencies in Sri Lanka are enthusiastically gearing themselves to participate in the forthcoming Effie Awards 2016.

The Effie Awards are recognized by Marketing professionals the world over as the global symbol of effective Marketing communication. The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) has the franchise to hold the awards ceremony in Sri Lanka and has been conducting the event for the past nine years.

This year, the brief for participants was held at the Kingsbury Hotel on 7th April 2017. It is noteworthy that the participation from mainstream advertising

The judges brief for NASCO was held on 21st of July 2017 at the Water’s edge. This was an official meeting arranged to brief the judging panel on the judging criteria. The meeting was headed by the Jury Head Mr Stephen Paulraj.

The Press & Participants’ briefing of NASCO – 2016, was held on 19th May 2016 at the JAIC (Hilton Colombo Residencies with the participation of a distinguished panel inclusive of Mr Karthik Elangovan – President -SLIM, Mr Suranjith Swaris - Vice President SLIM, Mr Stephen Paulraj – Head of the judging panel and Mr. Manthika Ranasinghe - Project Chairman.

A Vesak Dansala was organized by the Education Division together with the Colombo SLIM Student Association on 12th May 2017 at the SLIM Home premises with the participation of many SLIM students and the staff.

SLIM ICE CREAM DANSALA was held on May 11th of at the SLIM premises as an act of generosity for the refreshment of the spectators who were visiting the city to worship at the religious places. 1000 ice cream cones were distributed among the visitors who were passing the dansal premises.

Matara SLIM Students’ Association arranged an Ice Cream Dansala for the first time on 10th May 2017 in front of the SLIM Business School Matara.

IFTHAR Evening 2017 was held on 21st June at the SLIM SBS Kithulwatta to mark the breaking of fast. Colombo SLIM Student Association and SLIM Education Division together with Muslim and non-Muslim students marked this very important day in the Muslim religious calendar.

The Success Camp initiative was organized as part of an exam supportive session for the students in stage 1, 2 3 & 4 of Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing intake 1, 2017. This special session was organised focusing on PGDIP Intake 1, 2017 Presentation Sessions on 17th June at SLIM SBS Kithulwatta. SLIM Toastmasters facilitated this session and the session was conducted by Mr Royston Cumine, a member of Toastmasters Club. The event will go down in the history of SLIM as the programme which posted the highest participation for a guidance session.

The brand launch of the Diploma in Strategic Brand Management Intake 2 – 2016 took place on 29th July, 2017 at six different locations around Colombo as part of the practical project.

There were six teams who conducted their brand launches. Mr Chene Wickramathilake, Mr Nuwan Rathnayake, Ms Sanjana Senevirathna and Mr Shalika Alahakoon participated at the launch. The product which was given to launch was “Coconut Milk” and students were evaluated based on their novel ideas to market Coconut Milk to the Sri Lankan market. The students were guided throughout by Mr Denzel Perera. Further, Ms Prasangika Kumarage, coordinator-examination and Kasun Thushara, Coordinator-Business School assisted the process.

The primary objective of organizing such an evaluation was to expose students to a real-life situation while they make the best use of their classroom learning in practice.

SLIM Marketing Roks, the vibrant Marketing program for school children by the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing, the National body for marketing marks its sixth consecutive year in 2017.

The program in 2017 will cater to a gamut of schools in every district in the island. SLIM Marketing Roks is approved by the Education Ministry of Sri Lanka as a program to educate and nurture school children.

This national CSR project directly caters to senior school children with a futuristic vision. Via this unique and innovative program, SLIM is on a quest to groom students to enter the challenging business world confidently. Briefing sessions of the 2017 program was held on May 30th & 31st at Colombo, Kandy and Matara while Gaming sessions were held at the same venues in June. A total of 10 Career Guidance seminars (three each in Central and Southern regions and four in Colombo region) will be held, with a participation of over 500 students in each session.

The first ever Online Examination was conducted for the Certificate in Digital Marketing - 2017 Batch 1 on 16st July at the SLIM Home and SLIM Kandy Branch. This also highlights the launch of the Learning Management System to SLIM programmes.

PCM Intake I 2017 Examination was held on 9th July at the Technical College & SLIM SBS Kandy respectively. All the eligible students sat for the exam from 09.30am – 12.30pm

The Inaugural Education Reforms Committee meeting for the academic year 2017/2018 was held on 7th June 2017 at SLIM Home – Borella with the participation of SLIM Council of Education and Education Division Staff.

SLIM CSR EVENT 2017- A snack was provided to over 1000 commuters on 05th of August 2017 in order to entertain of the spectators who were gathered around the temple of the tooth to witness the glamour of the Esela Perahara.

An interactive session, SLIM BAK MAHA 2017 was held on 30th of April 2017 at the Trinity College Junior grounds with all the students and lecturers, to signify the customs and rituals embedded in this traditional festival. The event took place by performing the rituals of lighting the oil lamp at the Gama Gedara and concluded by awarding the winners of the traditional events.

The popular Preliminary Level Marketing Program has its second & third Inauguration for 2017

The second & third Inaugurations of the Preliminary Certificate in Marketing (PCM) program was held in

April & July at SLIM Business School in Kithulwatte & Sri Lanka Tourism Hotel Management

Institute respectively.

The large gathering of over 150 people at the Inaugurations comprised of young executives,

school leavers and youngsters working in different fields who aspire to better their lifestyles with a

knowledge of Marketing.

Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) had its Inaugural session of the National Diploma in Sales Management (NDSM) for 2017 at SLIM Kithuwatte branch.

NDSM, a one-year Diploma programme caters to sales career-minded candidates seeking to acquire specific competencies to differentiate themselves from conventional sales personnel. NDSM also fits in with those engaged in Marketing or Business Development, intending to enhance their skills in Sales Management in order to widen the knowledge and secure their career paths.

SLIM recognized its students who have obtained Distinction passes in December 2016 CIM exam by presenting Certificates of Excellence. The event was held at SLIM home in Colombo.

Although SLIM students have obtained CIM world prizes in the past, the highest number of Distinction passes for CIM was obtained by them in the past year. The occasion shed light on an overall view on CIM studies, Global Context in Marketing and the opportunity for individuals to enter the international Marketing arena via the CIM qualification.

Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) being the National body for Marketing is the longest servicing accredited study centre for CIM studies in Sri Lanka. Many students, by winning world prizes over the years, have added immense credibility to CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) studies at SLIM.

SLIM held a Gala event to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Certified Professional Marketers at The Victorian, Kingsbury Colombo on the 1st of June 2017. CPM bears the highest professional Marketing status in the Asian Region; over 100 privileged CPM holders attended this gathering followed by dinner and fellowship.

Past Presidents of SLIM who are CPM holders were honoured with accolades denoting SLIM’s appreciation of the contribution they have made to the marketing fraternity and the entire nation.The Project Committee was chaired by Mr Upali Ranjith along with council members Mr Pradeep Edward & Mr Roshan Fernando acting as advisors.
