To Those I LoveIf I should ever leave you whom I love, To go along the Silent Way, grieve not,

Nor speak of me with tears, but laugh and talk of me as if I were, beside youthere. (I’d come-I’d come, could I but find a way! But would not tears and

grief, be barriers? And when you hear a song or see a bird I loved, Please do not let thethought of me be sad... For I am loving you just as I a1ways have...You were so good to me! There are so many tbings I wanted still to do-somany things to say to you ... Remember that I did not fear... It was Just leaving you

that was so hard to face... We cannot see Beyond .. But this I know; I lovedyou so-’twas heaven here with you!

I am writing to let all of you know that Daddy (Frank O. Gruber) 85, died June 8th, 06. He went to the hospital onTuesday night because he slipped off the couch & was breathing heavy. He died Thursday morning of congestiveheart failure. We were all in a state of shock because he was doing so good. I want to thank all of you for the calls, cards and letters to Daddy. It meant the world to him that all of you remembered him. He was so proud of his years& the friends he made at Donnelleys. He felt so lucky to have been part of such a fantastic company as RRDonnelley & Sons. Thank you again. We will all miss him terribly With Thanks & Love

It is with a heavy heart that I have to report thepassing of my husband, Joe Sehr (Cust. Service)on June 23, 2006. Joe suffered the consequencesof a stroke he had in January, 2000. During thepast 6 1/2 years Joe survived pneumonia threetimes only to succumb to respitory failure. Joeremained a die-hard Cubs fan in spite of their piti-ful league standings but he did watch televisedWhite Sox games during his two month hospitalization. One of hisgreatest joys over the years was reading the Newsletter and follow-ing the adventures of his retired co-workers. Please continue to sendthe Newsletter. Joan M. Just a short note to tell you that RRD has donated itsarchives to the U of Chicago Library and they haveopened an exhibit of these archives at the Library. It hasbeen on-going since September 15th and will continue itsrun to February 12, 2007. It is housed in two spaces of thelibrary and one, the rare book section, is not always open.It is best to call to find out when all sections are open tobe viewed. Their number is 773-702-8705. The catalog Ihave is very interesting giving a comprehensive back-ground on the Donnelley family, the early years, and thoseof the development of the company and various processes. The many pictures taken by Torkel Korling in the lateForties and many of the printed products make it wellworth the time anyone has to make the trip to 1100 E. 57thstreet to visit the University of Chicago Library.

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the TenCommandments with her five and six year olds.

After explaining the commandment to "honor" thy Fatherand thy Mother, she asked, "Is there a commandment that

teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a fam-

ily) answered, "Thou shall not kill."

Russell SmeltzDepts. AT, AS, HPL

Amboy, IL******

Time to hear from a 70% er. I've just been busy, busy, busy. When Donnelley start-ed rumors about closing Chicago, I started with preparing for retirement. First, around '83 a small (4,000 acres) camping area was opening in North Central Illinois,so I bought my piece of the rock, so to speak. At first it was touch and go, almostwent belly up twice. Now O'boy, we have 15 to 20,000 or more visitors on Holidays.

We're 24-7-365. My family sure knows where to spend their weekends and vacations. The 90's brought all my 50th anniversaries, all except marriage, that's next year. I was raised an orphan (orphy is what we

were called) so when my 50th came up for the 8th grade, I decided to track down my orphy class. The wife said, well wewon't say what she said. There were 17 of us and believe it or not, I and a classmate from Philadelphia tracked down every-one. Had a reunion in Reading, Pa., 8 of the 17 showed up. Orphy's can't run home when the going gets tough, but this classproduced 6 school teachers, a college professor (English), an AT&T executive, a politician, a mayor, a chief of police, afinancial advisor, and a tax consultant among other things.

The one main thing I'm really proud of is tracking down my family's roots. With just a sheet of Smeltz telephone num-bers I started to call all the Smeltz's. The first one was, believe it or not, a Russell Smeltz, turned out to be a distant cousin.Everyone was in favor of a family reunion, so I planned one, it still runs today. From this reunion came people who wantedto do a book on the descendants of Andreas Smeltz (1751-1834), the first Smeltz who settled in Lancaster, Pa. This bookwas published in 1995 by a Robert Fisher, he did a lot of work on it for which I am very grateful. The book is 400 pagesthick, and I finally found my roots (now for a mini series for TV, right?).

Bethany Orphanage was established in 1863 and still runs today. Takes in the less fortunate now. It's located about 25miles east of Hershey, Pa., sits at the base of a mountain. Our little Mt. Everest, as we called it, we, the boys all climbed thatdarn mountain to the top (eagles peak) we called it. Today it's a ski run for the "less fortunate."

From Bethany it was on to Stevens College for me. Stevens College is the only college in the nation that is free (2 yearcollege) to financially disadvantaged and indigent orphans (that's me). Stevens is still growing, turns away many trying toenroll. I graduated, went back for my 50th, had a ball. Still support their building program (have a few bricks with my nameon them in the buildings). Let me emphasis Stevens is only a free 2 year college to Pennsylvania, not everyone in the coun-try (U.S.A.).

I had a prostate operation, opted for a spinal, talked all the time to the operating group, even watched my operation onclosed circuit TV. Told the surgeon don't make any wrong cuts and ruin my sex life. He insured me, no way, if anything I'llmake you feel like 38 again. You know he was right, I do feel like 38 again. You do believe me, don't you? My wife, Frances, had open heart surgery, had a valve (cow) replaced in her heart. We are both doing fine.

We moved to a central Illinois town (population 5,000-6,000) and every year I enter the towns Christmas decorating con-test. I win 1st or 2nd; with about 10,000 lights outside (you should see my electric bill, it lights up too). Santa stops everyChristmas, usually wants 2 things: (1) Who's lighting up the countryside and (2) to see if I know the address of someDonnelley retiree.

Spend half a day mowing 3 acres of grass. Fran can't mow because of her surgery. Still go on vacations in the motor home(takes my monthly pension to fill the gas tank, one or two times).

In closing, I've got to top Obie (Ed Oberman) on finding or bumping into someone. Many years ago, on occupation dutyin Europe, we had an American POW who worked in our mess hall (kitchen to civilians). Well many years later, who comeswalking down the hallway on the 6th floor, but Matt. That's right, he came to Chicago and started at Donnelley, stayed about30 years, until Donnelley started to close. Ed knows who I mean. (I left the last name out, he may not want it used.) I triedto contact Matt about a year ago, "moved" it said, if in fact, he is still with us.

I almost forgot to mention one of the saddest days of my life as an orphan. After taking my entrance exams to StevensCollege and being almost accepted, I say almost, because I had to have a birth certificate, to prove you were fromPennsylvania. That sounded simple enough, so off to the State Capitol I went, only to find out there was no record of mybirth (no darn birth certificate). Thank God, I found my oldest sister who told me, Go back to the capitol and ask for a birthcertificate in the name of Donald Edwin Smeltz. It seems as though my parents named me Donald Edwin at birth and bap-tized me Russell Allen. What a mess, anyway I straightened it all out, with some difficulty and explaining. After all that, Iwas given a birth certificate in the name of Russell Allen, oh, they charged .50 and off to Stevens College I went and therest was history. Russell Smeltz

Thanks for thegreat story "OldAge is A Gift.”

After reading it I felt better. Mywife, Betty died in April, just afterher 75th birthday, of cancer. We hadsold our home in Crawfordsvilleand remodeled Betty's mother'shouse in Florida so that we couldstay in Florida and take care of her.She is 96. Until last year things werelooking great; the remodeling was asuccess, and all our junk fromCrawfordsville was moved. Thenshe came down with cancer (pancre-atic) and died within a year. Now,I'm taking care of her mother who isnot ill, but is pretty feeble. I'm glad

to have children to fill in the blanks. The problem is they all live inIndiana. While Betty was dying shewas cared for by the Hospice ofLake County who did an absolutelyremarkable job that can't be praisedenough. They are second only toangels. I have volunteered to helpthe hospice in any way I can.

John G. Schreiner(Sales)

St. Michaels, MD***********

After retiring in early '92, we stayedin Rowayton CT until Heidi couldcomplete getting her masters inSpecial Education. From there we

moved to the "Eastern Shore" of MD after purchasinga plain-jane rancher on a great waterfront lot. Until wemoved we rented in out and since moving have been upgrading it continually.

Shortly after arriving in MD I became a kitchenand bath designer .... work I truly enjoyed as it gave mea way to get to know this area while exercising the rightside of my brain. After 7 years at that work, I becamemore active with the local Quaker Meeting, begantutoring regularly in the local jail, and have since takentraining and now work in community mediation.Between mowing and tending to our 5 acres here Isneak in rounds of golf. My one good shot a roundkeeps me coming back.

After 5 years teaching Special Ed at a localschool, Heidi retired and took up basket weaving andnow is a master and doing truly artistic work. It's a joy-ful endeavor.

We travel together around the world wheneverwe can. Our last trip was hiking in Patagonia(Argentina) and next October we're slated to tourTurkey including a brief cruise aboard a Gullet off theTurquoise Coast.

We are blessed with two grown daughters liv-ing in Minneapolis and Cambridge England respective-ly; each providing us w/ 3 grandkids for 6 wonderfulsouls for us to fuss over.

We continue to revel in the luck of great health.Heidi's a veggie and I work out regularly and some ofeach activity rubs off on the other. We're grateful.

Linda E. Harrington(Paper Coordinator/Traffic)

Old Saybrook, CT***********

My former boss and dear friend, AlCanfield, has been nagging me forseveral weeks to send you a checkand a letter of request for member-ship in this not-so-exclusive club. During my shorttenure with Al in Old Saybrook I was better known asLinda Rowe. I remarried shortly before Al and I bothleft the division - him to retirement and me becausethey didn't really know what to do with asecretary/Paper Coordinator after the Paper responsi-bilities had been passed on to CSR Supervisors and thesecretary was no longer needed. I had been cross-trained for Traffic, but it never was much fun for mechasing truck drivers or freight cars. So I left the divi-sion for home for awhile before going back to work, ultimately in a local Town Hail. I really am retiringnow, but will be quite busy driving for The EstuaryCouncil here in Old Saybrook and with continued carefor my almost 6-year-old grand-daughter. The photoabove at Al's desk while he was on vacation and I wastrying to hold down the fort for him no easy task.

**********I hope your healthhas improved sincethe last time I sawyou. It's almost

twenty years since my retirement from Donnelley's and Isit and wonder where the time went. Still playing a littlegolf and with the short distance I now hit them, I don'tlose too many balls. Living by myself for the last fourteenyears with no interest in tying the knot again.

I made so many friends throughout the Companywhile I was working and have lost touch with most ofthem. Will be back in Chicago for the fall luncheon andhope to see many of my old acquaintances. Hope every-thing is going well with you and your fellow officers ofthe "Lakeside Press Retired Employees Club" and myregards to my fellow retirees wherever you are!

LONG-TERM COMMITMENT:Recent widow who has just buried fourth husband, and am looking for someone to round out a six-unit

It’s About Time?!?!**********************

Colleagues: The AARP has negotiatedwith the USGA to modify the Rules ofGolf for seniors.Rule 1.a.5A ball sliced or hooked into the roughshall be lifted and placed on the fairwayat a point equal to the distance it carriedor rolled into the rough with no penalty. The senior should not be penalized fortall grass which groundkeepers failed tomow.Rule 2.d.6 (b)A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed notto have hit the tree. This is simply badluck and luck has no place in a scientif-ic game. The senior player must esti-mate the distance the ball would havetraveled if it had not hit the tree andplay the ball from there.Rule 3.b.3(g)There shall be no such thing as a lostball. The missing ball is on or near thecourse and will eventually be found andpocketed by someone else, making it astolen ball. The player is not to com-pound the felony by charging himself orherself with a penalty.Rule 4.c.7(h)If a putt passes over a hole withoutdropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the Rulesof Golf.Rule 5. Putts that stop close enough tothe cup that they could be blown in,may be blown in. This does not apply toballs more than three inches from thehole. No one wants to make a travestyof the game.Rule 6.a.9(k) There is no penalty forso-called "out of bounds." If penny-pinching golf course owners boughtsufficient land, this would not occur. The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty.Rule 7.g.15(z)There is no penalty for a ball in a waterhazard, as golf balls should float.Senior golfers should not be penalizedfor manufacturers' shortcomings.Rule 8.k.9(s)Advertisements claim that golf scores

can be improved by purchasing newgolf equipment. Since this is financial-ly impracticable for many seniorgolfers, one-half stroke per hole may besubtracted for using old equipment. Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes.
