    Obey Gods Word

    December 5, 2010

This study follows the sermon series our pastor has just competed. We have beencelebrating the 175th anniversary of our church. Brother Bob has used 1*3*5*1 to

present an overview of why we, First Baptist Church of Cumming, exist.(Have someone write what they come up with on the board.)

What does FBC Cumming - 1*3*5*1 mean?

    FBC Cumming - 1*3*5*1

    One Vision:

To be unified as a body to glorify God and reveal Jesus as Gods Son.

    Three Core Values:

    1) The Sovereignty of God2) The Sanctity of Human Life3) The Significance of the Church

    Five Purposes:

    1) Worship God2) Reach people for Christ3) Obey Gods Word4) Love one another5) Serve others

    One Attitude:

The church that gives itself away

Our pastor referred to the five purposes of our church in a recent sermon. They are based

in the Great Commission and the Greatest Commandment.

What is the Great Commission? The Great Commission: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing

them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teachingthem to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always,

to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

To whom was the Great Commission given?Every believer (every Christian)

    What is the Greatest Commandment?

The Greatest Commandment: (In response to the question, Teacher, which is thegreatest commandment in the Law? Matthew 22:36) Jesus replied: Love theLord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your

neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these twocommandments. Matthew 22:37-40

To whom was the Greatest Commandment given?Every believer (every Christian)

How does the Bible teach us to love God?(Where does the Bible say this?)

John 14:23-24 Jesus replied, Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. MyFather will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear arenot my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

Bob stated that the original statement of the five purposes of our church included teach

Gods word but the staff and leadership changed it to obey Gods word. This changewas based in the specific wording of the Great Commission. The text clearly states the

objective was not to teach for knowledge, but rather to teach for obedience.

This changed the focus from learning to doing. James 1:22 states it this way:

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Thisis an intentional move from learning what the Bible teaches, to learning to obey

    what the Bible teaches.

What is the difference between learning what the Bible teaches, to learning to obey

    what the Bible teaches?

What do we need to do differently?

    Idea:

Form pairs within the class:Make contact at least once a week to ask:

Review: What are you learning to obey?

Support: How can I pray for you?Accountability: Is there anything you want or need to be accountable for? If so, Ill

ask how it is going the next time we talk.

Outreach: Who have you talked to about spiritual things? (A first easy step is toinvite them to church).

What do you think about having an accountability partner for review, support,

    accountability and outreach?
