Translucent polycarbonate sheeting Bolted and braced recycled timber structure Glowing beacon 01- The Beacon. Contextual response The proposal includes an architectural response to the chapel building with the addition of a new temporary structure. The addition is a modern interpretation of the chapel form, set back slightly from the chapel facade to establish the hierarchy of the two volumes. The overall composition aims to reflect and enhance the character of the existing chapel, whilst the translucent facade offers glimpses of the activity within. Maximizing site potential The proposed extension aims to creatively integrate use of the external courtyard area as part of the development. The un-insulated structure would house a winter garden and provide a flexible, programmable ancillary space for the creative hub. This cold be used as a break-out space with meeting pods during summer, a yoga studio or dance class in the spring, or a bar/ reception space for music events in the winter. Materiality The proposed addition would be a demountable, temporary structure made of scaffolding and bolted and braced timber. The simple low cost structural frame would be over clad with translucent polycarbonate sheets to form a striking building envelope made from low-cost, conventional building materials. Materials have been selected in response to the proposed 2 year life of the development, and the very low construction budget. All material would be locally sourced from within the estate and re-used and recycled where possible. Architectural beacon A temporary scaffolding ‘chimney’ acts as a glowing beacon;- identifying the location of the hub from the bottom of Malham Road, and signaling the start of a creative transformation of the estate. The form of the ‘chimney’ references the industrial typology, with the pink neon signaling the contemporary artistic nature of its current occupation. The chimney and beacon form a recognizable physical identity for the new creative hub space.

01- The Beacon.Contextual response The proposal includes an architectural response to the chapel building with the addition of a new temporary structure.

Architectural beaconA temporary scaffolding ‘chimney’ acts as a glowing beacon;- identifying the location of the hub from the bottom of Malham Road, and signaling the start of a creative transformation of the estate. The form of the ‘chimney’ references the industrial typology, with the pink neon signaling the contemporary artistic nature of its current occupation. The chimney and beacon form a recognizable physical identity for the new creative hub space.

02- The Collective.Nomadic workspaceThe internal spatial concept is one of anti-architecture. Internal proposals capitalise on the large span, open plan space and encourage nomadic working - allowing creatives join onto desk banks to form collaborative work hubs for multi-disciplinary projects. The aim is to promote collaboration between teams and disciplines to strengthen and enhance projects and encourage cross fertilisation of ideas.

Flexible kit of partsThe internal concept has been developed as a mobile modular kit of parts. These parts can be moved into unlimited configurations to accommodate changing needs and tenant organisations, and result in constantly evolving configurations of the space.

This maintains maximum flexibility of the space, allowing multiple uses and revenue streams. The modules can be efficiently stacked to create a large open plan event space, or be reconfigured as building blocks to form larger communal structures such as tiered seating for lectures of shared events.

Expanded programmeTenant’s expectations about their place of work are changing, and the workplace needs to provide more than just deskspace. We envisage the space as a creative hub with a programme of art, culture and wellness.

An extensive programme of lecture series, art exhibitions, yoga and dance classes, life drawing, ceramic and furniture making classes within the studio would serve both the building occupants and the local community. Linking in to the rich network of artist and architects in Forest Hill, The Beacon Collective could invite local creatives to guest-curate a month of events and exhibitions.
