General recommendations for a successful cleaning ofmembrane filtration equipment

Crossflow-microfiltration During the first 1 - 3 minutes (depending on the plant size) ofthe cleaning process the plant should be set to the highestpossible feed flow and the lowest possible filtration rate.

Afterwards the filtration capacity should be increased.

Whenever the membranes permit the highly effective backflushing from the permeate side, this procedure should beapplied right at the beginning of the cleaning process.

During the disinfection of the filtration plant, the filtrationcapacity should be set to an average value.

Ultrafiltration Ultrafiltration plants should be cleaned with applying a highfeed flow and a low filtration capacity. Nevertheless, closing ofthe permeate side as standard procedure should be omitted.Especially when cleaning plants with a large dead volume onthe permeate side the permeate volume should be drainedbefore cleaning starts, or the permeate side should be cleanedusing an individual cleaning circuit with a small, separatecirculation pump.

Indication! The pressure on the permeate side should never exceed thepressure on the concentrate side!

As suggested for crossflow-microfiltration, during thedisinfection process an average filtration capacity should beestablished.

Nanofiltration, For cleaning nanofiltration and reverse osmosis plants, theReverse Osmosis highest feed flow and the lowest possible pressure and filtration

rate should be chosen. Plants with a large dead volume on thepermeate side should be cleaned as described above.

During disinfection, the pressure should be adjusted to obtainabout half the nominal flux capacity of the membranes.

For recommendations of cleaning and sanitising agents, suitable for the type of membranes and filtration process pleaseconsult our technical P3-ultrasil data sheets.

For manual operations fresh sanitizing solutions should be prepared as soon as they become diluted or soiled.BACTERIOPHAGE CONTROL: XY-12 will significantly reduce the incidence of Streptococcus cremoris and Streptococcusdiacetilactis bacteriophage in cheese manufacturing establishments by fogging at a concentration of 600 ppm available chlorine.Fogging should be used as a supplement to acceptable manual cleaning and sanitizing of room surfaces as described above.DIRECTIONS FOR FOGGING: Prior to fogging, food products and packaging materials must be removed from the room orcarefully protected. Fog desired areas using one quart per 1000 cu. ft. of room area with an XY-12 solution containing 600 ppmavailable chlorine. Vacate the area of all personnel for a minimum of 2 hours after fogging. All food contact surfaces must then bethoroughly rinsed with an XY-12 solution at 200 ppm of available chlorine. Allow surfaces to drain thoroughly before operationsare resumed.FOR CONTINUOUS TREATMENT OF MEAT AND POULTRY OR FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CONVEYORS: Wash, rinse andsanitize conveyance equipment. During processing, apply XY-12 at a 200 ppm available chlorine level to conveyors with MikroMaster® or other suitable feeding equipment. Controlled volumes of sanitizer are applied to return portion of conveyor throughnozzles so located as to permit maximum drainage of sanitizer from equipment and to prevent puddles on top of belt. Duringinterruptions in operations, apply a coarse spray to equipment, peelers, collators, slicers and saws with Mikro Master dispensedXY-12 solution of 200 ppm available chlorine. Conveyor equipment should be free of product when applying this coarse spray.FOOD EGG SANITIZATION: Thoroughly clean all eggs before proceeding. To sanitize clean shell eggs intended for food or foodproducts, apply solution with a coarse spray at 2 oz of product in 6.5 gallons (2.4 mL/L) of water (providing 200 ppm availablechlorine). The solution must be equal to or warmer than the eggs, but not to exceed 130°F (54°C). Wet eggs thoroughly and allowto drain. Eggs that have been sanitized with this chlorine compound may be broken for use in the manufacture of egg productswithout a prior potable water rinse. Eggs must be thoroughly dry before casing or breaking. The solution must not be reused forsanitizing eggs.LAUNDRY BLEACH: Add 2 oz product per 10 gallons (1.6 mL/L) of wash water (125 ppm available chlorine).FRUIT AND VEGETABLE WASHING: Thoroughly clean all fruits and vegetables in a wash tank. Thoroughly mix 8 oz of product in 200 gallons (0.3 mL/L) of water to make a sanitizing solution of 25 ppm available chlorine. After draining the tank, submerge fruitsor vegetables for 2 minutes in a second wash tank containing the recirculating sanitizing solution. Coarse spray rinse vegetableswith the sanitizing solution prior to packaging. Rinse fruit with potable water only prior to packaging.HAND SANITIZING: After hands have been washed and rinsed, dip into a 1/2 oz per 6 gallons (0.6 mL/L) solution of XY-12 (50 ppm chlorine).WATER CHLORINATION: For farm, private or small municipal water chlorination, use 0.2 to 0.6 ppm of available chlorine.Use chlorine test kit for the determination of proper concentrations and amount of residual chlorine. Mix ratios: 1 pound to 15 gallons (8g/L) for light fouling1 pound to 10 gallons (12g/L) for heavy fouling

• Drain as much water from the membrane system as possible.• Fill CIP cleaning tank with 5 gallons (18.9L) of RO/UF permeate water for each

4”x40” membrane or 20 gallons (75.7L) for each 8”x40” membrane to be cleaned.

• Add 1 pound of Filtrapure Iron Remover for every 15 gallons (8g/L) of water [1 pound/10 gallons (12g/L) for heavy fouling]. Ensure that the cleaner is completely dissolved by mixing the solution or by recirculating the solution around the cleaning tank with the transfer pump.

• If possible, heat the cleaning solution being sure not to exceed 110°F (43°C) or the manufacturer’s temperature guidelines, whichever is the lower.

• Open the concentrate valve to minimize operating pressure during the cleaning. Recirculate the solution in the normal direction of flow through the membrane system and back to the cleaning tank. Adjust the transfer pump to achieve the maximum individual housing flow rate without exceeding the membrane manufacturer’s differential pressure guidelines.

NOTE: Cleaning can be conducted by either isolating membrane stages or as anentire skid. For example, cleaning the leading stage of a 2 – 1 array (the first twohousings) and then cleaning the last housing in the array will make it possible toachieve maximum flow in all housings. However, cleaning flow rates can also beattained by cleaning the entire skid as a whole. Your Ecolab representative canassist in the determination of the optimum method for cleaning of your system.

• Recirculate for a minimum of 30 minutes and static soak for 30-60 minutes. Additional recirculation and soaking can be instrumental to cleaning effectiveness.

• Discharge the cleaning solution to drain. Rinse the remaining solution out of the system. Note: Neutralization of spent solutions may be required at your facility. Check local regulations.

• Return the concentrate valve to its normal position, but divert the permeate water to drain until the conductivity returns to normal levels and no foam appears.
