Some including theWahhabis and some Orientalists have called this a deviationrom the norms o the religion, arguing that Islamic historyhas been not so much Islamic as antinomian. Even i we ad-mit that there are presumably overt discrepancies between

    what the ulama envision as a perect Shariah society and thecultural practices o Muslim societies, it is a healthy tensionand unctions as a mechanism o checks and balances againstthe strictly text-based, relatively abstract, and reductively le-galistic approach o the jurists.

    In creating their cultural orthopraxies, Muslim commu-

    nities were unctioning within the ramework o the ethicaluniversalism o the Quran and the Sunnah. Te Quraniccall to enjoin what is good and praised (maruf) and orbidwhat is morally evil and disliked (munkar) is not a culture-specic injunction. It is addressed to all peoples regardlesso their religious afliations.
