01.10.20 “When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” - Ernest Hemingway Dear AHS Families, Had a kid in the office today who made a mistake. Mistakes happen. Every. Day. Some mistakes result in a WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!? kind of conversation and nothing more.* Others require a bit more of a consequence. This was one that needed more than just a conversation. However, in the process of discussing the infraction and talking with the student, it became abundantly clear that we had an individual who was struggling with something pretty significant. There was honesty. There were tears. And our focus quickly shifted as we began exploring ways in which we might best support this student and provide helpful resources. You just don’t know what students are dealing with. They may sit quietly in the classroom or they may be the most extraverted kid around. Not knowing a world without social media (literally...think about that!), they are well-equipped to present a “face” to adults and peers alike that would suggest they have everything together - grades, abilities, self-confidence, etc. And yet there always seems to be much more beneath the surface. And it is often here, beneath the surface, that we develop true affection and empathy for the other. So, back to this situation from today. Don’t get me wrong - there was discipline. Afterall, actions bear consequences. However, if we’re doing our jobs, we are always working to encourage and support our students as unique and loved individuals - in the midst of both life’s successes and its trials. Have a GREAT weekend! Rob *Incidentally, it’s important for ALL of us to remember that when we ask our kids “WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?” and they say, “I don’t know” it’s often true - they don’t know...and science would support this as those darn frontal lobes take a few more years to develop!! We could all benefit from a little patience. UPCOMING SCHOOL EVENTS: Note: This is not even CLOSE to an exhaustive list, but an attempt to provide parents with major, school-related upcoming events.
