French School of Maputo goes bilingual (French – English) As from September 2008, the French School in Maputo will be introducing bilingual education (English/ French), starting with the first two classes of kindergarten. The children will follow the French national curriculum, but will receive half of their tuition in French, and half in English. Experience from French schools in other countries shows that when children receive a bilingual edu-cation their learning is improved in all subjects, in addition to gaining excellent language skills. The French School is located opposite the American International School of Maputo, and next to the Portuguese School. It has modern, purpose built premises, with extensive playing fields and recrea-tional areas. There are currently 200 students, ranging in age from 3 to 18, representing over 20 na-tionalities. It belongs to the network of French schools overseas (429 in 125 countries), and the staff hold teaching qualifications. Children participate in a wide range of educational, sports and cultural events including school trips, inter-school competitions and extra-curricular activities. It follows the European academic year (September to June). It is a very friendly school which provides a high qual-ity education, and is the centre of a lively community for school families and their friends. We would be delighted to show you round the school. Contact us on 21 485 927/8 to arrange a visit and for more information [email protected].

Feeling stressed in the City??? Want a break in the Bush?? Why not take a weekend (or a week) break to relax with the Wildlife. You can rent our beautiful Bush Cottage "Alegria" in Marloth Park. Marloth Park is about a 90 minute drove from Maputo. The Park is stocked with Giraffe, impala, wildebeest, kudu, warthog and other won-derful species. You can just "chill" out on the terrace of the cottage and watch the animals graze in the gar-den. Even better, the Crocodile Bridge entrance to Kruger Park is just a 15 minute drive from the cot-tage. Even better again, the Kruger Park fence is just a 5 minute walk from the house. On our last visit to the fence we spotted 6 lion and 1 buffalo (and the buffalo survived!). For more information, contact Stephanie Walker on 82 3024370.

Feeling cold in Maputo??? Want a break in Europe?? Why not take a holiday in the sunny Algarve (Portugal). Fellowships at the National Endowment for De-mocracy The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) invites applications to its Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program. Established in 2001 to enable democracy practitioners and scholars from around the world to deepen their understand-ing of democracy and enhance their ability to promote democratic change, the program is based at NED’s International Forum for Democratic Studies, in Wash-ington, D.C.

Program: The program offers five-month fellowships for practitioners to improve strategies and techniques for building democ-racy abroad and five- to ten-month fellowships for scholars to conduct original re-search for publica-tion. Practi-tioners may include activists, lawyers, journalists, and other civil society professionals; scholars may include professors, research analysts, and other writers. Projects may focus on the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural aspects of democratic development and may include a range of methodologies and approaches.

Eligibility: The fellows program is intended primarily to support practitio-ners and scholars from new and aspiring de-mocracies. Distinguished scholars from the United States and other established democracies are also eligible to apply. Practi-tioners are expected to have substantial experience working to promote democracy. Schol-ars are expected to have a doctorate, or academic equiva-lent, at the time of application. The program is not designed to pay for profes-sional training or to sup-port stu-dents working toward a degree. A working knowledge of English is an im-portant prereq-uisite for participation in the program.

Support: The fellowship year begins October 1 and runs through July 31, with major entry dates in October and March. All fellows receive a monthly stipend, health insur-ance, travel assistance, and research support through the Forum’s Democ-racy Resource Center and the Reagan-Fascell Research Associates Program.

Application: For further details, please visit us online at www.ned.org. For instructions on how to apply, please download our most recent Information and Application Forms Booklet, available at www.ned.org/forum/R-FApplication.pdf or visit us online at www.ned.org/forum/reagan-fascell.html. All application materi-als must be type-written and in English.

Deadline: Applications for fellowships in 2009–2010 must be received no later than November 3, 2008. Notification of the competition outcome is in April 2009.
