NEW!with The Good SchoolGrade: 2-5Day(s): Friday$425Students in this stop motion animation after-school class explore new frontiers of stop motion animation. Whether they are animating with found objects, legos, paint or clay, this class is sure to excite! These young animators will use professional grade stop motion software, Dragonframe Stop Motion, and will get familiar with using professional grade tech such as DSLR cameras, tripods, and Mac computers. The resulting short films can be screened again and again, downloaded and shared with the world.

Amazing Animation! Instructor TBAGrades: 3–5Day(s): Thursday$385Have you ever wanted to draw as well as Disney animators? Learn the secret studio techniques of the Disney imagineers! Students will also learn animation tricks from the Japanese Anime Masters and Tezuka Productions! Learn how to draw dynamic figures and characters that feel like they pop off the page! Design fun fantasy worlds for your characters to roam in!The course will begin with the short handmade animated films of Windsor McCay, the father of animation. Students will draw inspiration from watching classic cartoons from 1930 – 2000 including: The first Disney short cartoons and movies; Hanna-Barbara classics such as Space Ghost, The Herculoids, the Flintstones, Rocky and Bullwinkle; and classic superhero cartoons from the 40’s - 90’s, like Batman the Animated Series and Max Fleisher’s Superman.

The goal for this class is for each student to develop their own unique characters with back stories and a unique world for the characters to live in by the end of the semester.

Action Painting! Instructor TBAGrades: K–2Day(s): Thursday$385Not your typical painting class! This class will utilize experimental ways of painting and mark making, focusing on the act of painting rather than the final image. In addition to using paints and brushes, we will also explore more experimental ways of painting including using brooms and sticks, rocks and balls, dancing on our drawings, print making, and collage to make expressionist and abstract pictures.

Advanced Beginner/Intermediate Cello with InterPlayGrades: 1–5 Day(s): Wednesday$400 For students who have completed at least one prior semester or had private or group lessons elsewhere. The piano class is designed to teach the concepts and fundamentals needed to perform on the piano. It will increase musical understanding beyond just reading notes by teaching students a vocabulary of chords and keys, accompaniment patterns, and improvisational techniques. Students will have the opportunity to participate in ensemble playing. Students will develop good practice habits and learn techniques to increase the muscular agility and flexibility of their hands. Advanced Jr. Fll Roboticswith Jeremy Young Grades: 2–4Day(s): Tuesday OR Thursday$400 (This class is open to students who have previously enrolled in the JrFLL class only.) This class is designed to leverage the students’ skills from the beginner class and take Jr.FLL teams to the next level. The class uses the LEGO® Education WeDo™ system designed specifically to bring the fun and challenge of robotics to students ages 7 to 11. Team members will build LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors, program their models with colorful, visual software designed for kids, and explore a series of cross-curricular, theme based activities while developing their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as language and literacy. The class allows for building models that are more robust and intelligent, too! This class provides a smooth transition to the skills needed in the FIRST LEGO League.

Advanced Mandarinwith Wei BoGrades: 3–5Day(s): Thursday$450(This class for all kids who were previously in the program or who have completed two or more years of Mandarin.) All lower school students have exposure to Mandarin once a week as part of the regular school curriculum. Wei Bo Mandarin Afterschool Program helps your child learn this increasingly important world language. Wei Bo is a great resource, teaching language and culture through fun and engaging methods and activities. Students will learn how to read and write Chinese characters. After3 Comedy Club with Improv KidsGrades: 2–5Day(s): Wednesday$385Students will learn valuable theater and comedy performing skills while developing a comedy show at the end of the semester. While Improvisation is the focus, those interested in Stand-Up and Sketch Comedy will have the opportunity to create original material. Program Director, Walt Frasier, has appeared on Late Night with Letterman, MTV, VH1, WE, Nick, Off Broadway, Broadway Tours and more. Mr. Frasier is the Artistic Director of EIGHT IS NEVER ENOUGH. His staff performs 500+ shows every year.

Beginning Jr. Fll Roboticswith Jeremy Young Grades: K–2 Day(s): Monday or Wednesday$400 Per DayThis course is designed to foster students interested in science and engineering who are just getting started in the world of Robotics. Facilitated by adult mentors, the students research, think critically, and imagine ways to solve challenges pertaining to “Super Seniors: Improve the quality of life for seniors.” The students will be mentored to produce both (1) a tri-fold poster of the team journey and (2) a LEGO model with at least one movable piece comprised of 400 to 1,000 LEGO parts during the season. This course fosters teamwork and critical thinking. This will be a fun journey where imagination and creativity are mapped to building a movable machine.

BioBase Sisters in ScienceGrade: 3-5Day(s): Tuesday OR Thursday (Can only enroll in one day)$385BioBase provides a space exclusively for girls and young women to find their scientific interest. Over the course of the semester, students will learn to formulate and test their own hypotheses. Students will engage in lessons from a variety of scientific fields such as biological sciences, environmental sciences, and material science.

The BioBase is a state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary community science lab, housed in the brand-new Lower East Side Girls Club Center for Community, just eight blocks from Nest+m. At the BioBase, students use research-grade microscopes during school-day, after-school, weekend, and summer science explorations. BioBase Ph.D. level scientists lead standards-aligned courses in biological science, environmental science, and materials science that nurture students’ natural curiosity and critical thinking skills. Students will be walked over to BioBase after dismissal by After3 staff and then escorted back to the facility by After3 staff at the end of the day. Students will attend homework club until the session starts. Please note this course will begin the first week of March. During the Month of February, students can participate in indoor games and activities or homework club.

CAPOEIRAwith Afro Brazil ArtsGrades: 2-5Day(s): Friday$385For boys and girls! Capoeira is fun! It is playful Brazilian Karate with acrobatics. It is a Martial Art that combines kicks and acrobatics, dance and cart wheels. Although Capoeira is from Brazil, it is popular all over the world. The class is taught by Capoeira teaching artists from Afro Brazil Arts under the direction of Mestre Ombrinho, the first North American master. Your child will build strength, confidence, flexibility, coordination, reflexes, awareness, balance, agility, and so much more! WINTER-SPRING 2015 CLASS DESCRIPTIONSCard/Physical Game Club NEW!with Mark DeNardoDay (s): MondayGrades: 1-3$375Who doesn’t love Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh ? The game mechanics of the these card game phenomena have been with us for thousands of years. Totemism, cooperative play, and probability mathematics have been components in gameplay culture since our species’ early development.Games are integral to our learning, growing, and surviving in the world around us, and have followed us from the caves to the cities as a useful creative social tool. This class for ages 6-8 is designed to take spontaneous fun and the joy of making games, and put it in the context of Game Design. Types of games will include but not be limited to physical games, pen and paper games, card games, and dice games.

This class will also have students play and iterate existing games as design practice. Eventually students will create their own games based on weekly themes, and have other students play-test these games. We will first focus on the Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh games: breaking down the rules, reverse engineering and rewriting the rules to create new outcomes, gameplay, and interactive experiences. An exercise in neuroplasticity, it will also teach students adaptability, problem solving, and how to make their own fun!

Card Game Club! Instructor TBAGrades: 3-5Day(s): Friday$300CARDS! STRATEGY! MONSTERS! SPELLS! TRAPS! You will be handed your own deck of blank TRADING CARDS to create your own unique card game! Students will be assisted in designing their cards and learn any drawing techniques that they wish to develop! Share ideas with your friends and design a large game together! YU-GI-OH!, Magic the Gathering, Vanguard, Pokémon and other trading card games are all welcome in this class. Experience the amazing worlds of YU-GI-OH! and Pokémon by reading the manga and watching episodes of the anime!

Students who play YU-GI-OH! will have a chance to duel with me and their friends. Card and manga prizes will be given to students who create their own cool cards and for winning tournaments! We will have epic class tournaments of existing card games as well as the games created by each student! So bring your deck and get ready to play your way!

Chess: Beginning / Intermediatewith Chess Focus/ Jovan MileticGrades: K–5Day(s): Tuesday OR Wednesday$475 Per DayThe class uses projectors to explain strategies of chess, including openings, tactics, and endgames. Groups are formed by chess knowledge. Children learn all aspects of the game, besides lessons done by chess teacher kids will learn to focus by solving chess puzzles and by playing against similar opponents and analyzing their games with the chess-master.

In this class students will learn to appreciate the language of comics, and how they work. Students will be introduced to comics from around the globe such as super hero comics from the U.S., Japanese Manga, European comics, Chinese Manwa and Korean Manhwa. Read comics from all genres such as action, sci-fi, comedy, magical girls, comic strips, martial arts, fantasy, biographies, non-fiction, mysteries, westerns and sports! Learn the history of comic books and their secret origin! Students will also learn how to create rough drafts for comic pages (thumbnails) and how to design COOL COMIC PAGES! Study famous maverick cartoonists from the late 19th century to the present. Delve into the minds and hands of the pro cartoonist by learning to use professional comic art tools to learn the techniques and tricks of the trade. Everyone will learn new things in this course. Students who attend for the month of June can attend outdoor games and activities or homework club. Gramercy Learning provides NYC children, grades K-2, with the skills, tools and confidence necessary to design and develop their own websites. The curriculum, created by an Early Childhood Development student at Brown University, is aimed towards primary grade students and offers a unique, fun, and tactile approach to teaching young children the language of code. During this 15-week course, kids will have the opportunity to create websites through HTML and CSS, design artwork through basic Photoshop, and maybe even develop the next Zuckerberg-sized idea.

Cookingwith Tuesday MinorGrades: K–2Day(s): Tuesday, Thursday OR Friday(Friday class open to all student) $385Each week the young chefs will make delicious food, bake tasty treats, and learn about meal planning using the new food pyramid. Our recipes will be inspired by the children’s food studies at school. The After3 cooking curriculum will supplement the children’s school curriculum. We will be incorporating fundamentals of math, science, reading, and art as we make our yummy treats. Watch as we combine elements and make the fizz, crackle and change color! We'll delve into molecules and chemical reactions that produce light, gas and even slime. Some of the weekly topics in this session include: Lab Works, Junior Reactors, P.H. Phactor, Slime Time, The Glow Show, Dry Ice Capades, Icky Sticky Stuff, Chemistry Corner, The Mystery of Chem and Kitchen Chemistry. In addition, students will develop problem-solving skills unique to the 3D design process: brainstorming, research, design, implementation, and evaluation. Teams of three students will identify a problem in their communities, collaborating on designing and printing their own unique model that will provide an innovative solution. Scratch teaches coding through the encouragement of reverse engineering and redesigning games by other designers, encouraging them to redesign and publish their remix of a game.

Through this process, students learn high-level coding skills such as decomposing problems into small pieces, combining components into larger solutions, and troubleshooting. Students find strategic uses for mathematical concepts such as angles, Cartesian (X-Y) coordinates, and formal logic.

This course will teach students how to draw everything Manga and Anime related! Based on Scratch, Tynker’s game-based quests and courses show kids how to make their own video games that they can share with their friends. As kids gain proficiency, Tyker allows for coding in Javascript, a web coding language, right inside its API. Game Development is a viable career in the 21st century. Learning the skills of game design also develops many technical and creative tools necessary for new careers. Designing a successful game involves: Systems Thinking; Creative Problem Solving; Art & Aesthetics; Writing & Storytelling; Interactive Design; Programming & Technical Design; Communication & Collaboration. Kids will learn the fundamentals of video game design, use professional tools (e.g. Photoshop), take part in challenging game projects, and have a better understanding of what makes a good game by play-testing and reviewing each other’s games.

Writopia Lab NEW!Grade: 4-5thDay(s): Wednesday$450Writopia Lab is returning to After3 to run a special weekly writer’s workshop this spring! For about half of the semester, writers develop and write their own original short stories and/or plays and poetry on a weekly basis with a published writer or produced playwright. Writers will explore core elements of plot, key literary tools, and mechanics of a coherent story. During the second portion of the semester, writers will focus on essay writing. Writers will learn to analyze evidence, craft arguments, and structure and organize their ideas effectively. The workshop culminates in a reading for family, faculty, and friends. Each child leaves the workshop with a story and essay in hand and with a new found love of writing in his or her heart.

Writopia Lab runs the most fun and productive writing workshops for teens and tweens in New York City. Each year, Writopia teens win more writing awards than any other group of students in the country. While the focus of writing workshops is on story and creative expression, we will explore structure and grammar as we revise our work, and our writers ultimately organize their thoughts into coherent, fluid, complete narratives. Workshops are run by published

authors or produced playwrights trained in Writopia’s method. Writopia’s method is student-centered; at Writopia, we witness every day that teens and tweens write at their best ability when writing what they want to write. Sessions are peppered with instructive games and helpful exercises.

I will also be teaching about the use of different essential oils and how certain smells can transform moods ; lavender relaxes, citrus energizes. It will be a combination of physical movement, relaxation and the science of aromatherapy. A great way to start the weekend relaxed and happy!

Young Architects Club: Google SketchUp Prowith Howard SternGrades: 3–5Day(s): Tuesday$385Students will learn the tools to create floor plans, buildings, chairs, and other objects using Google Sketch Up. With the push/pull tool, you can make floor plans 3 dimensional. With the orbit tool, you can fly in, out, and around your project. With the paint tool, materials and colors can be added. Young Actors Workshop: Crazy Characters & Theather Games with The New Acting CompanyGrades: 2-4Day(s): Thursday$450Our youngest actors will explore multicultural stories through puppetry, creative movement, music, visual art, and dramatic play. Students become sly tricksters, wild animals, and clever heroes as they bring exciting tales to life. Our youngest actors move their bodies in new and inventive ways as they journey through each weekly adventure. Problem solving, creative expression, communication and teamwork are encouraged. Class culminates in an end-of-semester performance for family and friends.
