Learning Activities for Outcome 1The extraction of copper from its ore.

Malachite

Malachite contains copper carbonate and easily breaks down to form copper oxide

Copper is then extracted by heating the copper oxide with carbon.

This works because carbon is more reactive than copper.

Copper containing impurities is produced.

impure copper

Copper comes from minerals in the Earth

Page 8: 01:51 Syllabus/Unit Code: C2 CHEMICAL RESOURCES Lesson number: L03 Lesson Title: The extraction and purification of copper Learning OutcomesHow I didTargets

Experiment - The extraction of copper from its ore.

Part one• Put about 3g of copper carbonate powder into a boiling tube.• Adjust the Bunsen burner flame so that the air hole is half-open.

Holding the test tube using the test tube holder, heat it gently until the contents turn black and stop rising. Let the tube cool down.

You must wear eye protection

Page 9: 01:51 Syllabus/Unit Code: C2 CHEMICAL RESOURCES Lesson number: L03 Lesson Title: The extraction and purification of copper Learning OutcomesHow I didTargets

Part two• Carefully tip the black product into the crucible.

Add about 0.5 g of carbon powder and mix well. Put the lid on.

• Put the crucible on the pipe clay triangle and heat it strongly from below for about five minutes. Turn the Bunsen burner off.

• Allow the crucible to cool for several minutes.• Tip the contents of the crucible into the beaker

of water. Stir briefly, then let the solid contents settle. Carefully pour off the water.

• Add more water, stir, and allow the solid contents to settle as before. Carefully pour off the water

• Repeat step 5 until the water no longer contains black bits. Examine the solid at the bottom of the beaker and record its appearance.

Experiment - The extraction of copper from its ore.

Draw a labelled diagram.Write the word and symbol equations for this reaction.

Using electrolysis to purify copper - Summary

Copper dissolves off of the impure anode:

and is deposited onto the pure cathode:

The impurities are valuable and are collected, so that silver and gold can be extracted from them.

Learning Activities for Outcome 3 Oxidation and reduction

• OXIDATION - loss of electrons or increase in oxygen.OXIDATION - loss of electrons or increase in oxygen.• REDUCTION - gain of electrons or decrease in oxygenREDUCTION - gain of electrons or decrease in oxygen

Starting from malachite look at the stages in the extraction and purification of copper and identify those involving oxidation or reduction. Explain your answers.

Thermal decomposition not a redox reaction.

1. Malachite is heated.

Page 26: 01:51 Syllabus/Unit Code: C2 CHEMICAL RESOURCES Lesson number: L03 Lesson Title: The extraction and purification of copper Learning OutcomesHow I didTargets

2. Copper(II) oxide and carbon are mixed and heated.

copper(II) oxide + carbon      copper + carbon dioxide

2CuO (s)      +     C (s)          2Cu (s)     +    CO2 (g)

This is a REDOX reaction.Carbon is oxidised

by gaining oxygen to form carbon dioxide.

Copper (in CuO) is reduced* by losing oxygen to form copper metal.

*copper has changed from Cu2+ (in CuO) to Cu and so has gained electrons:

Cu2+ (s)  +  2e-      Cu (s)
