5.11 Building Shell

Recommcnded builditlg shell improvement mcasures include the use of high-efficiencywindows, caulking and weather-stripping.

High-Efficiency \Vindows

Double pane and even triple pane windows are most beneficial in areas with long heatingscasons (cold climates). The use of argon, kryton and other inert gases between the panesdo not increase the insulating valve of the window per se. They delay the onset ofconvective currents between the panes when the indoor-outdoor temperature differentialis high (e.g., greater than 40 F)-the conditions which do not exist in Thailand. For a hotand humid climate like Thailand, preventing solar gain is the most importantconsideration and thus the use of low-emissivity glazing and spectrally selective coatingsdiscussed below are recommended for Thai hotels.

A standard double-pane helps less in waml climates. But, unlike single pane, a double­pane window can have a special coating applied to it, which greatly reduces heat gainfrom the hot sun. This coating is called low-emissivity (low-e). More than any othersingle improvement. the in\'ention and commercial dev'elopment of low-e coatings in the1980s rc\o[utiomzcd witldow technology. Low-e glazings ha\'e special coatings thatreduce heat transfer through \\itldow$. The coatings are thin, almost invisible metaloxide or semiconductor films that are placed directly on one or marc surfaces of glass, oron plastic films bet\yeen two or more panes.
