Using Drosophila as a model for understanding vertebrate mechanosensation, RNA interfer-ence is being used to systematically knock down the various ion channel subunits specifi-cally in mechanosensory neurons. This data will provide essential insight into the ion chan-nel contributions to mechanical senses and, in the cases where clear vertebrate homologues exist, these channels may represent potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
