A CHRISTMAS REPRISE The Church’s celebration three weeks ago of the Baptism of the Lord signaled the “official” end of the Christmas season. Today’s feast of the Presentation of the Lord seems to extend the Incarnation celebration a bit longer. In fact, some have called this feast a “second Epiphany.” The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as Malachi writes, “Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me.” The reading from Hebrews reminds us of the Incarnation, proclaiming that Jesus had a “share” in our own “blood and flesh.” The Gospel finds the infant Jesus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his human parents once again surprised and in awe over the events surround his birth. In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May we come to know him and so be filled with “wisdom” and the “favor of God.”

RETORNO A LA NAVIDAD La celebración de hace tres semanas del Bautismo del Señor señaló el fin “oficial” del tiempo de Navidad para la Iglesia. La fiesta de hoy de la Presentación del Señor parece extender la celebración un poco más allá. En realidad, algunos han nombrado esta fiesta una “Segunda Epifanía”. La primera lectura nos recuerda la

anticipación del Adviento, como escribe Malaquías: “Envío a mi mensajero para que prepare el camino ante mí”. La lectura de los Hebreos nos recuerda la Encarnación, proclamando que Jesús tuvo una “parte” de la misma “carne y sangre”. El Evangelio encuentra al niño Jesús en su primera visita a Jerusalén, y a sus padres una vez más sorprendidos y asombrados por los acontecimientos de su nacimiento. En la sencillez del pesebre, en la grandeza del templo, en la domesticidad de Nazaret, Jesús viene. ¡Que lleguemos a conocerlo y por ello nos encontremos llenos de “sabiduría” y de la “gracia de Dios!”

Today’s feast is both magnificent and mysterious: magnificent because the very first contemporaries of Jesus begin to recognize him as Christ, the anointed Savior of the world; mysterious, because this King is still a child, an obscure boy obedient to his earthly parents. The prophet Malachi—living and dying before the coming of Christ—points toward the arrival of the Messiah and encourages God’s people to prepare themselves by living generous, holy lives. The Letter to the Hebrews—written after Jesus’ ministry, death, and resurrection—renews the prophetic call to holiness, reminding us that the Lord will always help us: “Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.” The Gospel reading overflows with examples of joyful men and women living God’s call to holiness. Mary, Joseph, Simeon, and Anna show us, in their own ways, how to love Christ.

THE LIST GOES ON Today’s readings reflect on something close to the heart of every human person: the fulfillment of our deepest desires. Without exception, each of us feels unfulfilled in some way. Despite advances in law, technology, and medicine, every person experiences the frustration of “not yet” or “not enough.” Our hearts always want more. God plants this desire in our hearts. God knows how we ache. What most of us fail to believe, deep down, is that God alone satisfies all our longing. We know, theoretically, that the Creator of the universe provides everything we need, but we could all use more quality time with God to consider the question, “What exactly do I need to be happy, Lord?” Perhaps we can spend more time in prayer and service, asking the Lord to show us what is truly important in life.

ALWAYS READY FOR JESUS We often think, “Once I get this, or once that happens, then I will be happy.” But the Gospel shows a better way. All four adults in today’s Gospel long deeply for the Messiah and “the consolation of Israel” he will bring. Human temptation might obsess over the promise of future peace and prosperity, leaving only anxiety and resentment for present suffering. But Mary, Joseph, Simeon, and Anna leave the saving of the world to God; for their part, they focus on Jesus. Each of them keeps busy with daily details of the various lifestyles they have chosen. Mary and Joseph concern themselves with raising a family, while Simeon and Anna dedicate their lives to prayer in the temple. They find peace enough in fulfilling the obliga-tions of their stations in life, maintaining a lively pray-er life to be attentive to God’s action in the world. In today’s Gospel, their focus is literally and spiritually on Jesus. They model for us how to be happy and holy: performing their daily duties peacefully, always ready to recognize Jesus as he reveals himself.

La fiesta de hoy es a la vez magnifica y misteriosa: magnífica porque los primeros contemporaneos comienzan a reconocerlo como Cristo, el Salvador Ungido del mundo; misterioso, porque este Rey es todavia un Niño, un niño desconocido y obediente a sus padres terrenos. El profeta Malaquias –quien vivio y murio antes de la venida de Cristo– habla acerca de la llegada del Mesias y motiva a la gente a prepararse viviendo generosamente vidas santas. La carta a los Hebreos –escrita despues del ministerio de Jesus, muerte y resurección –renueva la llamada profética a la santidad, recordandonos que Dios siempre nos ayudará “Porque el mismo Dios fue probado a través de su su-frimiento, El es capaz de ayudar a los que están siendo probados”. La lectura del Evangelio esta llena con ejemplos de la alegria de hombres y mujeres que vivieron la llamada de Dios a la santidad. María, José, Simeón y Ana nos muestran a su manera como amar a Jesucristo. LA LISTA CONTINUA Las lecturas de hoy reflexionan en algo que está cerca del corazón de cada persona: el cumplimiento de nuestros de-seos más profundos. Sin excepción, cada uno de nosotros se siente insatisfecho de alguna manera. Pese a los progresos de la ley, la tecnología y la medicina, cada persona experimenta la frustración del “todavía no” o del “no es suficiente”. Nuestros corazones siempre quieren más. Dios planta este deseo en nuestros corazones. Dios sabe cómo sufrimos. Lo que mucho de nosotros fallamos en creer, muy profundamente, es que solo Dios satisface todos nuestros anhelos. Sabemos, teóricamente, que el Creador del universo provee todo lo que necesitamos, pero podría-mos dedicar más tiempo de calidad con Dios para considerar la pregunta: “Señor, ¿qué es exactamente lo que necesito para ser feliz?” Quizá podemos dedicar más tiempo en la oración y el servicio, pidiendo al Señor que nos muestre lo que es verdaderamente importante en la vida. SIEMPRE LISTOS PARA JESÚS A menudo pensamos “cuando obtenga esto o cuando eso pase, entonces seré feliz”. Pero el Evangelio nos muestra una manera mejor. En el Evangelio de hoy, los cuatro adul-tos anhelan profundamente al Mesías y “la consolación de Israel” que él traerá. La tentación humana podría obsesionar-se con la promesa de una paz y prosperidad futura, dejando solo la ansiedad y el resentimiento para un presente sufriente. Pero María, José, Simeón y Ana dejan la salvación del mun-do a Dios; de su parte, ellos se enfocan en Jesús. Cada uno de ellos están ocupados con sus ocupaciones del día en sus trabajos que eligieron hacer. María y José están preocupa-dos en como proveer a su familia, mientras que Simeón y Ana dedican sus vidas a orar en el Templo. Encuentran sufi-ciente paz al cumplir sus obligaciones en sus estados de vida, manteniendo una vida de oración viva para estar aten-tos a las acciones de Dios en el mundo. En el Evangelio, sus prioridades están literal y espiritualmente en Jesús. Ellos modelan para nosotros cómo ser feliz y santo; haciendo sus deberes diarios pacíficamente, siempre listos para recono-cer a Jesús mientras él se revela a sí mismo.

SAN FELIPE DE JESÚS (1572-1597) 5 de febrero Felipillo, como era conocido, nació en la Ciudad de Mé-xico en una familia de comerciantes. Dado que su vida era un desastre, una de las africanas que cuidaba dijo que la higuera seca del patio “florecería cuando Felipillo fuera santo”. Luego de explorar la vida franciscana y huir de ella, su padre lo envió a Filipinas para que pro-bara suerte en los negocios, pero esta vida tampoco le llenó. Ingresó nuevamente a la Orden Franciscana en Filipinas y, con el paso de los años fue enviado a México para ser ordenado sacerdote. Su barco naufragó en Ja-pón durante un período de persecución contra los cris-tianos liderado por el emperador Taicosama. En su cali-dad de extranjero, Felipillo podía evitar el martirio, pero decidió unirse a sus compañeros franciscanos y jesuitas y sufrir con ellos la muerte por Cristo. Lo colgaron de una cruz, lo sujetaron con argollas y dos lanzas lo tras-pasaron. En su agonía repetía una y otra vez: “Jesús, Jesús, Jesús”, de ahí que se le venere como Felipe de Jesús. SAINT AGATHA (died 251) February 5 “Of noble birth and great beauty,” so the ancient accounts describe Saint Agatha, martyred during an early persecution for refusing a powerful Roman’s offer of marriage, since she had consecrated her virginity to Christ. An early preacher, Saint Methodius, reflects in-stead on her name, noting that, in Greek, Agatha means “good,” goodness being something we can all strive for, nobly born or common, blessed with beauty—or not! So brutal the tortures that violated her youthful innocence, Agatha, like Agnes and several other women martyrs, was honored from time immemorial by having her name inscribed in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I). Long invoked as protector against earthquakes—Mount Etna erupted as she was being tortured—recent atten-tion has focused on the particularly cruel torture de-creed for Agatha, the cutting off of her breasts. This has inspired cancer survivors to promote Saint Agatha as patron and intercessor for women courageously facing breast cancer, for their families and the multitude of supporters who participate in fund-raising marches and races, and, of course, for the dedicated researchers who seek a cure.
