The Third Joyful MysteryThe Nativity of Christ
And it came to pass, that in those days there went out adecree from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world
should be enrolled. And it came to pass, that when theywere there, her days were accomplished, that she should

What makes prayer successful?
Successful prayer requires a change of heart, a desire to see the will of others and the will of God accomplished instead of our own.
To pray is not towithdraw to our own private corner of happiness. When we pray properly we undergo a process of inner purification
which opens us up to God and thus to our fellow human beings as well.In prayer, we must learn what we can truly ask of God - what is worthyof God. We must learn that we cannot pray against others, that wecannot ask for the superficial and comfortable things that we desire atthis moment - that meager, misplaced hope that leads us away from God- and we must learn to purify our desires and our hopes.

Jesus on Prayer Urgent Prayer
I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs
because of his persistence. And I tell you, ask and you willreceive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will beopened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the onewho seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will beopened.
If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the holySpirit to those who ask him?

Jesus on Prayer Pray Without Ceasing
There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected man. And a widow in that town used to come to him andsay, Render a just decision for me against my adversary. For along time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, Whileit is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being,
because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decisionfor her lest she finally come and strike me.
The Lord said, Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Willnot God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to himday and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he willsee to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?

Jesus on Prayer Pray With Humility
Two men went up into the temple to pray: the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee standing, prayed thus withhimself: O God, I give thee thanks that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, as also is this publican. I
fast twice in a week: I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not so much as lift up his eyestowards heaven; but struck his breast, saying: O God, bemerciful to me a sinner.
I say to you, this man went down into his house justified rather than the other: because every one that exalteth himself, shall behumbled: and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.

Praying the Psalms
Psalms have the power to raise men's minds to God and to evoke inthem holy and wholesome thoughts GILH 100
Each Psalm has a literal meaning which even in our time cannot be
neglected. GILH 107The Holy Spirit who inspired the psalmists, is always present withHis grace to those Christians who with good intention sing andrecite these songs GILH 101
The Psalms express the deepest movements of the soul in wordsthat are designed to be prayed in common.... When prayed in
private, alone the Psalms by their very nature join us to the wholeBody of Christ The School of Prayer , p43
