LORD OF ALLSaint Paul was born and brought up a Jew with an ex-cellent religious education. He expected a Jewish Mes-siah for the Jews, probably a great leader like KingDavid. Jesus did not fit that profile. Paul was convincedJesus' followers were deluded and dangerous, so hehunted them down. After his vision of Jesus on the Da-mascus road, Paul's outlook changed profoundly. Hewas wrong about Jesus and about Jesus' followers. He
was wrong about a Messiah just for the Jews. Remarka-bly, he could admit that he was wrong! He knew he hadbeen given an insight into the mystery of God's grace, which is universal and unconfined. These convictionstook Paul and his companions out into the Mediterra-nean world on long, dangerous journeys. Jesus wasborn a Jew in Bethlehem yet, as Risen Lord, he is Lordof all nations and peoples. Paul knew this. It changedhis mind. It changed his heart. It changed the world.

Treasures From Our TraditionBefore long, people will be throwing Mardi Gras beads
in the streets of New Orleans--purple, gold, and green. A
few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads arederived from the gifts of the magi. Gold for wealth, purplefor power, green for good health. The gifts are also a keyto the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; thegold for a king; the myrrh, fragrant burial ointment for onewho comes to die.
Centuries ago, today's feast bore the heavy burden ofcelebrating all the manifestations of Christ's identity: thebirth of Jesus, the coming of the magi, the baptism of theLord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for oneday. Fortunately the one day has blossomed into a wholeseason of grateful celebration, stretching behind us intoAdvent, and ahead of us into the Baptism of the Lord andto Christ's coming again in glory. Tonight, be sure to lightthe Christmas lights, and gather at the crche for a favoritecarol and a prayer. --James Field

National Vocation Awareness WeekJanuary 9-14, 2012
Tomorrow the Church celebrates the Feast of the bap-tism of the Lord and we inaugurate our celebration of na-tional Vocation Awareness Week. As we commemoratethat Jesus, the Second Person of the Trinity, took on flesh
and became a man like us in all things but sin, we recog-nize in our own Baptism a call to holiness, a call to be anauthentic and real witness to Christ present in the worldtoday. As we strive to fulfill this call to holiness, we striveto live a life of virtue which will lead to a true happinessthat will never fade.
The observance ofNational Vocation Awareness Week(NVAW) began in 1976 when the National Conference ofCatholic Bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the yearas the beginning ofNVAW. In 1997 this celebration wasmoved to coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of theLord. Let us pray today and always for the renewal andstrengthening of vocations of dedicated people as marriedand single people, men to serve as priests, deacons,
brothers, and women as religious sisters.
Prayer for VocationsGod of Love, You call us to live in your lovethrough the grace of our baptism.Bless us with the courage to carry outthe mission of Jesus.Grant us open and generous hearts to see the needsof others and to respond with compassion.May the Church be blest with women and men whoare dedicated to you through marriage, the single life, the diaconate, priesthood, and the consecrated life.
It is in Christ and through Christ that we offer ourselvesto you now and forever. Amen.
