33rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMENovember 13, 2011CHANGE OUR LIVES

The letters of Paul to the Thessa-lonians are among his earliest writ-ings, and are driven by his belief andthe belief of the entire early Christiancommunity that the return of Christwas imminent, and that devotingtime or attention to anything else

was foolish. As time progressed, this fervor

subsided a bit. Today we may won-der, when we hear these readingsabout the coming end-times, if weshould take them to heart, if wereally believe that Christ still maycome upon us as a "thief at night" (1Thessalonians 5:2). Does this meanthat we are to stop our long-rangegoal-setting, get rid of our yearly cal-endars and planners, or stop puttingmoney in the college education fund?Of course not. What it does mean is

that we need to change our lives, living like children of the light andilluminating the world around us withthe light of the gospel. Then, on thatday, when the details of our dailyliving become unimportant, we willbe ready to find our peace and secu-rity in Christ Jesus.

SECOND COLLECTIONToday’s second collection is for theBishop’s Annual Appeal.

STEWARDSHIP: USE IT OR LOSE ITTalents in Jesus' time were large sil-ver ingots. We define talents as ourGod-given abilities. Either way talentsare there for a purpose--to be used.As Jesus' story shows, money has novalue if it is buried. Our abilities are

just as worthless if we never usethem. Do you know what yours are? They are those special aptitudesunique to you. Unfortunately, thestories of the saints have not alwayshelped us. Some of us believe wehave to have extraordinary gifts likethem to do anything worthwhile. Notlong ago a scientist set up an experi-ment. She matched people recentlydiagnosed with multiple sclerosis withpeople who had had the same illnesslonger. She expected the newly-diagnosed would show an improvedoutlook with a new "buddy," and thisproved true. Surprisingly, the outlookof the helpers improved even more.Just the listening and befriendingmade all the difference. Think care-fully about what your true abilitiesare and use them for welcoming, spreading joy, making peace, heal-ing, or comforting.

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW"Hide not your talents. They for usewere made. What's a sundial in theshade?" --Benjamin Franklin (1706-

1790), American Founding Father, scientist, inventor, statesman, printer, and philosopher

CONCLUDING RITESThe word “mission” comes from

the Latin word mittere, which meansto send. In its most general sense, amission is an assigned duty or task.A mission can be a simple task likebeing sent to clean the yard, or itcan be something quite serious suchas being sent to relieve hunger in apoverty-stricken area.

When we use the term missionin reference to the Church and thebaptized, we are talking aboutsomething serious, because we aretalking about being sent to accom-plish God’s mission. The Church ismissionary by its very nature be-cause it exists to continue the workof the risen Lord through the powerof the Holy Spirit. The Church con-tinues the response to Jesus’ words:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in thename of the Father and of the Sonand of the Holy Spirit, and teachingthem to obey everything that I havecommanded you. And remember, Iam with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20).

The Church accomplishes itsmission through the ministry of thebaptized. Through the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist), each of us is empow-ered for mission. We are sent forthfrom the baptismal waters and tokeep the flame of faith alive in ourhearts. In Baptism we put on Christ,in Confirmation we are strengthenedwith the fullness of the Gifts of theHoly Spirit, and each week as wecele--brate the Eucharist we arenourished with the body and bloodof Jesus and sent forth to love andserve the Lord in others.

While some of the baptized aresent to mission lands or hear an awe-inspiring call to service, each of usis called to witness to the personand message of Jesus in the dailytasks of our lives. All of us are sent

to act as my friend does: to have asense of urgency, to be singularlyfocused and live in the fire of Pente-cost. This is the kind of witness thatwill accomplish the mission and it iseveryone’s responsibility.

Revised Roman Missal/Nuevo Misal Romano Over the last few months, we

have studied the upcoming new Eng-lish translation of the Roman Missal, which we shall begin using on theFirst Sunday of Advent – November27, 2011, which is two weeks fromnow.

Much still needs to be done aswe ready ourselves for the imple-mentation, and there will also surelybe a little sadness as we bid farewellto the Mass translation we have be-come accustomed to over the last 40years. However, despite some oppo-sition and criticisms we may encoun-ter, it is important to keep in mindthat the process by which we havereceived the new Missal has beenvery methodical and comprehensive.

There is never such a thing as aperfect translation, for each lan-

guage has its own unique character. But many experts and Church lead-ers have worked diligently over thelast decade to ensure we receive themost suitable and accurate transla-tion of all the prayers as possible. In a very real way, this new Missalshould help foster the full, active, and conscious participation of thefaithful – especially with respect torenewed interior participation atMass. The rituals and actions of theMass are not changing; rather, weare receiving richer translations of

the original Latin words of the Mass. The new words will require priestsand laity alike to be even more at-tentive to the deep meaning of theprayers.

As we have seen, the new trans-lation will reveal the Scriptural ori-gins of the Mass more powerfully. And although some of the prayersmay be longer or more complex thanthose we use right now, they wouldnot be terribly different in length orstyle from many sentences amongthe Pauline readings that we cur-

rently hear in the Lectionary. The new texts also demonstratethe evolution of the Church’s under-standing of how to use the vernacu-lar most effectively in prayer. Infact, many aspects are a recovery of the devotional language that is fa-miliar from private prayer books. Itis an effort to cultivate a “sacredvernacular” – an elevated style of speech that illustrates the signifi-

cance of the occasion, and helps usenter a context of divine worship. AsPope Paul VI urged in 1969, the lan-guage used in the sacred liturgy

“should always be worthy of the no-ble realities it signifies, set apartfrom the everyday speech of thestreet and the marketplace.”

Our sacred music at Mass shouldalso reflect this principle. We willsing new settings of the revised Glo-ria and Sanctus, but all music at

Mass should exude a clearly sacredstyle, for our singing in praise of theLord is a sacramentalizing of humanspeech. This is wonderfully evidentin liturgical chant, which evokes theheavenly choirs in a simple yetnoble fashion.

These elements of the newtranslation are integral to prayer andworship in the Roman Rite, which inturn are key to our identity as Ro-man Catholics. It is this need tomaintain a distinctive Catholic iden-tity that makes the new Missal so

important. Through it, we willachieve greater unity with Masstranslations in other languages. Butperhaps more significantly, our newtranslation of the Mass will help us toset ourselves apart from theculture at large.

It will require us to exercise pa-tience and discipline as we engagethe new texts for thefirst time. It will necessitate deeperstudy of the faith by presenting thesplendor of truth with greater preci-sion. Even if there are difficult words

or prayers, their meanings can betaught – and the opportunity tocatechize on the depth and mysteryfound in the words of the Mass canhave great evangelizing potential.

What better way to advance theNew Evangelization than through theHoly Mass itself?

The sacred liturgy is meant totransform and mold us, not viceversa! If we are uneasy with the

Church’s prayer, perhaps we shouldstrive to understand and enter morefully into that life of prayer.

Particularly as young people to-day find themselves having to com-bat radical secularism at every turn,it is of tremendous benefit to wor-

ship in a manner that is meant toradiate reverence, truth, and beautyunambiguously and abundantly. Arenewed expression of the immen-sity of what happens at the sacredliturgy is essential – this will inspiremore seekers of truth to recognizetheir home in Christ’s Church. Andultimately, we hope that such beautyin the Mass will lead to an increasein vocations to the holy priesthood. We should therefore approach thenew translation with joy, supportingour priests wholeheartedly as they

strive to implement the texts.
