AS WE GATHER

We consider today the witness of God’s faithful servants Simeon and Anna. As they beheld Jesus in the temple, they were overcome with joy and proclaimed the good news of God’s redemption and salvation. Jesus came into our world as light and peace. As you listen and sing of God’s salvation this day, may you be filled with the joy and peace that filled Simeon and Anna.

PREPARATION

2 As you, Lord, have lived for others,so may we for others live.Freely have your gifts been granted;freely may your servants give.Yours the gold and yours the silver, yours the wealth of land and sea;we but stewards of your bountyheld in solemn trust will be.

3 Come, O Christ, and reign among us,King of love and Prince of peace;hush the storm of strife and passion, bid its cruel discords cease.By your patient years of toiling,by your silent hours of pain, quench our fevered thirst of pleasure, stem our selfish greed of gain.

INVOCATION

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

OPENING SENTENCES

Pastor: How lovely is Your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts!

People: Blessed are those who dwell in Your house, ever singing Your praise!

Pastor: For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.

People: I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

Pastor: For the Lord God is a sun and shield.

People: The Lord bestows favor and honor.

Pastor: O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in You!

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Pastor: The Lord indeed bestows His favor and honor upon us, but we take His

favor and honor for granted. We place our trust in ourselves instead of in God. Our actions are for our own glory, not God’s. We are inconsiderate of our neighbors and too often neglect to gather for worship. But we come before our heavenly Father, seeking His favor and honor and forgiveness.

Silence for reflection.

Pastor: Heavenly Father,People: we confess that we have sought

our own way, not Your way. We have failed to open our doors and our lives to neighbors in need. We have chosen the tents of the wicked rather than Your house, but we are here seeking Your forgiveness. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive our sins. Restore us as Your beloved people.

Pastor: When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the temple for His

presentation, a man named Simeon took Jesus in his arms and proclaimed that he had beheld God’s salvation. This Jesus is our salvation. He has died and is risen for you, and He forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen. The Lord bestows favor and honor. We are forgiven in Christ.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The great philanthropist Stanley S. Kresge was often in the company of college presidents or other fund-raisers asking for endowment or financial aid. During the course of discussion, Mr. Kresge would always ask one question, "Do you think the world is better today than it was 2,000 years ago?" I’d like to ask you that question today. Is the world any better after 2,000 years since Christ came?

I say to you on this first Sunday of the month of February that Jesus Christ and his teachings lie behind all the efforts at social reform. It was he who put an end to slavery. It was Jesus who abolished the gladiatorial shows of ancient Rome. It was Jesus who elevated the status of women. It was Jesus who sanctified childhood.

It was Jesus, who by his emphasis upon the worth of human personality, conferred on us our liberty. It is Jesus who has given us a new way of life, a new standard of conduct, a new power for living. Christ can save our world when Jesus is born again in the hearts of men and women.

May you proclaim Christ to all by yours and actions!!
