PARISH NEWS

Dear Parishioners and Friends: I hope you’re having a relaxing summer. As is often the case, summer is a busy time at the parish; it’s when we can get caught up on a lot of facilities maintenance issues while school is out and the weather is agreeable, if sometimes hot. You may have noticed the new door on the west side of the church leading to the courtyard. It replaces an old door that had to be padlocked, causing a safety issue. The new door was salvaged from the undercroft and is an attractive improvement to the church. Also, we received a passing grade on an inspection from the Department of Buildings towards getting our Permit of Assembly, which allows us to have large functions in the undercroft. The school is a flurry of activity; the new library is going into what was once the auditorium. The old library will be fashioned into two sorely needed classrooms. And all the toilets in the children’s restrooms had to be replaced because the former toilets were the wrong size and improperly installed and created flooding in the sacristy. We’re keeping the former toilets and using them as needed in the rectory, undercroft and convent. We have a week ahead crowded with saints: St. Lawrence, St. Clare of Assisi, St. Jane Frances de Chantal, St. Pontian and St. Hippolytus. St. Lawrence, a deacon and martyr, was roasted to death, and famously said to his torturers "Turn me over, I'm done on this side!" And just before he died, he said, "It's cooked enough now.” St. Clare, who founded the Poor Clares, is the patron saint of television, due to a vision she had while lying sick in bed, in which she saw the crib and heard the singing just as is she were present in church. St. Jane Frances de Chantel founded the cloistered Sisters of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and was known for her service to the sick. Pontian and Hippolytus both lived in the 200’s

AD. Pontian was Pope, and Hippolytus, who had a opposing theology, did not consider Pontian to be the true Pope. They both ended up exiled to Sardinia, where they reconciled, proving that in our Church there is room for difference of opinion. Yesterday, August 6th, was the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. On Tuesday, August 9, we remember the bombing of Nagasaki. In this Year of Mercy, pray for peace. Father Duffell Sunday School Classes will begin Sunday, September 11 with the 10:00 Family Mass in the Church. Religious instruction is held in the school immediately after the Family Mass. Registration Deadline is August 1. Some Classes were overfilled last year. We may have to place your child on a waiting list after August 1. You will not be able to register your child on the first day of class. Re-registration forms and information will be mailed to current students. Registration Packets for new students can be picked up at the parish office or found on the Sunday School website www.blessedsacramentsundayschool.org Volunteer for Sunday School Sunday School Teachers and Assistants are needed to serve in this important Parish Ministry. Volunteers who work with children follow a screening process as required by the Archdiocese. Please call Tina Silvestro (212) 877-3111 for more information.

Should you wish to offer flowers in memory of a loved one please contact the rectory. The usual offering is $200.00.

Padre Duffell.

Is the process designed by the Church for adults to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. The goals are to give a complete overview of Catholic teaching and practice and to begin to deepen a Christian spiritual life centered in the Sunday Scripture readings. The sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil Mass. It is open to adults who: - Have never been baptized; they would be

preparing for all three sacraments. - Were baptized in a non-Catholic Christian

denomination who are interested in becoming Catholic; they would be preparing for Confirmation and First Communion.

- Were baptized Catholic but never received

Confirmation and/or First Communion; they would be preparing for the sacraments they have not yet received.

If you (or anyone you know) are interested in learning more about our program or registering, please call Tina Silvestro at 212-877-3111.

Pay, for a total of $11,236. However, the weekly operating costs to run our parish, such as salaries,

benefits, utilities, office and program expenses, etc., are approximately $20,000. This means we had an

operating deficit of $8,764 this week.

Please try to increase your weekly gifts so that we can eliminate our operating deficit. And please consider

signing up for Parish Pay There is no cost to participate in the program. You may log onto www.parishpay.com

or call 1866-727-4741 ext.1 to sign up.

GROUP DIALOGUE THERAPY COMING TO BLESSED SACRAMENT As we know, the best way to help change the global and in-USA violence that has been in the news for some time now is to have honest and open dialogue about our fears and anxieties regarding each other’s race, creed, culture, ethnicity, orientation, etc. So, in the coming weeks Blessed Sacrament is beginning a Dialogue Group to help address our conscious and unconscious biases, helping us openly and honestly hear and listen to each other’s concerns about those different from us. This is Step #1 for Blessed Sacrament parishioners, their families and friends. Our hope is to effect systematic change by expanding this enterprise to the larger community of churches, synagogues, mosques, politicians and the police. A lot to undertake? Yes! But that is why our initial and primary interest is in overcoming our own personal fears, anxieties, and bias. Then, as a united force, we can be a voice that positively impacts our society and world. Please consider joining us. The group(s), each limited to ten people, will have a discussion format and will convene for 1 1/2 hours on Wednesday evenings in the Rectory beginning August 10, 2016 at 6:30pm. If interested, please email [email protected]. If interested, but the meeting time is not convenient, please email as well. Knowing that many are still on vacation, it is expected that our numbers will grow after Labor Day. Thank you for your interest!

DIANNE R. CARR Pianist and musician, Dianne, is seeking others to join her in musically enriching the weekday 7:30am Masses at our parish. Please contact Dianne at [email protected].
