We’re Retiring to The Recliners Ourselves

Frankly, we’ll miss pleasing customers who come in searching for just-the-right mattress or chair.

So many of you have become our long-time friends since we took a deep breath before unlocking our door for the fi rst time on October 15, 1987.

Just shy of 30 years we’ll lock our doors and take down the sign. We’re closing with a deep feeling of gratitude for getting to know you, your kids and your grandkids.

Analyze bare spots to stop their returnBY NEIL [email protected]

Dear Neil:Over the win-ter I grew tired of some bare spots in my lawn. I planted rye-grass seeds, and now the lawn looks pretty good. However, I’m aware that the bare spots will return when the weather turns warm. What would you suggest I do?

Start by determining what caused those areas to be bare at the end of last growing season. If it was, for example, due to chinch bugs in St. Augustine turf, you could plug grass from another part of your lawn into those areas. But if it was due to excessive shade in a bermuda or even St. Augustine lawn, then the problem becomes much more diffi cult. St. Augustine is our most shade-tolerant lawngrass in Texas, and if it fails due to excessive shade,

your only options are to lessen the shade by remov-ing low-hanging branches or unneeded trees or planting a shade-tolerant ground-cover. Finally, you will see TV ads for grass seed in shaker cans. Odds are tiny that that seed will be any-thing you will want in those bare spots. You are much better off with one of the options above.

Dear Neil: What would make one gardenia plant drop leaves and leave bare stems behind when the plant beside it still looks fi ne? The problem started last summer.

It’s diffi cult to tell for sure. One plant might have got-ten too dry at some point, while the plant beside it had enough moisture to pull through. Gardenias are sub-ject to nematode damage. They’re microscopic worms that sting the plants’ roots and suck juices out of them.

it, while the next plant remained healthy. Those are the places I would start my investigating.

Dear Neil: I am having a terrible problem with one of my daylilies. I’ve tried cop-per fungicide and other con-trol products, and nothing helps. Is this rust? What can I do?

Yes. This is daylily rust. It was observed in China, and it has become well known to daylily enthusiasts since it was fi rst observed in the U.S. in 2000. Extension recommendations include Daconil as one of the fungi-cides that will control it, but it is also recommended that you prune off all affected foliage. If you want to read extremely detailed and use-

ful information on this dis-ease, this web page from theAmerican Daylily Societyhas everything: daylilies.org/ahs_dictionary/daylily_rust.html.

Dear Neil: I have used dishwashing soap on myredtips to kill the spots onthe leaves. Is that a goodplan? Also on rose bushes for black spot.

I am not entirely surewhere the use of dishwash-ing detergent got its bigstart in the control of seem-ingly everything, but folks, it is not something I would ever recommend. Never! Not for that use. Perhaps people are misreading mycomments when I say thatyou should add one drop of

GARDENIA TROUBLES — One gardenia could suffer while another thrives for multiple reasons, including dryness, nematodes or iron defi ciencies.

In the process, one type of nematode that is most com-mon on gardenias creates small knots or nodules. I couldn’t see the foliage very well in the thumbnail photo

you attached, but it’s also possible that iron defi ciency is involved. That could affect one plant due to some kind of odd soil issue or rocky outcropping beneath

More than six million children in the United States have asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With the incidence of asthma in developing countries more than doubling over the past few decades, researchers are looking for means of prevention. The latest fi nding comes on the heels of a study in which pregnant women were given 2.4 grams of fi sh oil daily during their third trimesters. Another group was given olive oil, instead. When the pregnant women’s children reached age three years, researchers found that the children born to mothers who took the fi sh oil had a 54% reduced incidence of asthma than the non-fi sh oil group. While more research is needed, the fi nding is signifi cant. For patients who are considering having children, regular obstetric care should begin before a woman becomes pregnant. At WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY, P.A., we believe that by monitoring a woman’s overall health, we’re able to help her plan in advance for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Additionally, our health care experts provide preventive care guidelines and advice that help our patients remain healthy in areas such as diet, nutrition, and sexually transmitted disease. To schedule an appointment, please call 940-626-8008. We are located at 2451 South FM 51, Suite 300, Decatur. New patients are always welcome.

P.S. While pregnant women are urged to avoid king mackeral, swordfi sh,and tuna over mercury ingestion concerns, smaller fi sh (like sardines) are lower on the food chain and do not accumulate mercury and other contaminants from eating other fi sh.

liquid dishwashing deter-gent per gallon of spray such as weedkillers when you’re trying to help hold the spray on waxy or funnel-shaped leaves. But it’s the product’s ability to break up surface tension and help distribute the spray uniformly that gets the big nod, not any actual herbicidal or insecti-cidal effect. For the record, we have no control for Ento-mosporium fungal leaf spot on redtips (and Indian haw-thorns), but there are sev-eral good products for less-ening black spot invasions.

Dear Neil: I have sev-

eral dwarf yaupons in vari-ous parts of our yard, and they all have developed dead areas. What could have caused this? (See pho-tos attached.) We have used no garden chemicals or changed any maintenance on these plants.

Although your thumb-nail photos are tiny, I do see the browned areas on the shrubs. It almost looks like something has been sprayed on the one side of each of them. Is there a male dog in the area? Is there any chance of fertilizer granules washing off the pavement and accumulating beneath

the plants in excess in those areas? It could have burned the roots in those areas, therefore the tops on the same sides as well. Look closely at the leaves on the boundaries between healthy and dead leaves. Are there any types of spots showing up, and does the dying appear to be spread-ing? That might suggest the fungus anthracnose. I’ve seen that on my own dwarf yaupons, but that was dur-ing an especially rainy early summer several years ago. The plants came back once better weather returned.

Dear Neil: I bought a

Mexican plum for my land-scape three years ago. This year it has actually set fruit. Are they edible?

Yes, but more as jelly than fresh at the table. They mature late in the growing season – much later than the improved varieties of table plums.

Q Have a question you’d

like Neil to consider? Mail it to him in care of the Wise County Messenger, P.O. Box 149, Decatur, TX 76234 or email him at [email protected]. Neil regrets that he cannot reply to ques-tions individually.

Call for coops: 2017 Coop TourBY CHRISSY [email protected]

One hobby that contin-ues to grow in interest is the raising of backyard chickens. This stems from families having the desire to grow their own food and from youth bringing home chicks from their classroom’s Egg to Chick project.

E i t h e r way, we are excited that we are in the middle of a chicken f r e n z y around here.

The Wise Chicks Coop Tour has held an annual tour for six years now, and I

am very excited to be involved with organizing the tour.

We are currently look-ing for families that have a coop up and running and would like to participate in the tour. In previous years, we have seen funky and fun coops to effi cient small-scale coops. The best part about the tour is that each coop and the chicks that reside there are different.

This year the coop tour will be held Saturday, May 6 and we are looking for coops all over Wise County.

If you have a coop you would like to share with the general public, please get in touch with the Exten-sion offi ce, 940-627-3341 by Thursday, April 13.

Dually Diesel

It came from the dryer screenBY GERRY [email protected]

Some who read my weekly pon-derings know that I am Baptist. Bap-tists have provided my h e r i t a g e , my educa-tion and my employment for the past 33 years. Some readers care about that, but I think it’s irrelevant to most. I don’t make a big deal about it because I try to keep my writing focused on the larger community of

faith and even offer words that are encouraging and helpful (hopefully) to those who have not yet embraced that community.

One benefi t of doing life in the same community for 26 years is that it makes pos-sible trusting relationships that supersede labels. It can also result in invitations that might never be pos-sible if all one is known by is a denominational brand name.

Such an invitation came to me a few weeks back to participate as one of a series of devotional speakers dur-ing the Lenten season. I was actually not the only Baptist asked to speak. The

other one has also been in the community for almost two decades and is a dear friend. I was not there to hear his message, nor was he there to hear mine, but I understand that both of us publicly admitted a similar dilemma: We are Baptists! What do we know about Lent?

Now since my Baptist preacher friend is much more polished and distin-guished and much less, shall we say “warped” than I, he probably didn’t men-tion that all he knew about lint was that it came from the dryer screen, the pants pocket or maybe the belly button. But I did.

Neither, I assume, did he produce a Ziploc bag of dryer lint and assure the gathered worshipers that it did indeed come from the dryer and not from the belly button. But I did. (I told you he was a higher class of speaker).

After admitting my limited knowledge of Lent and shar-ing some internet research I did to catch myself up as much as possible, I shared two thoughts on this season of refl ection and sacrifi ce. As we approach the end of the Lenten season, I share them now with you, whether you are a faithful observer or just hear it mentioned occasionally.

One lesson from the Lenten season is that our own personal sacrifi ces are inadequate. No mat-ter how much we give up or sacrifi ce, we will never sacrifi ce enough to make ourselves acceptable to God. We are only acceptable to God because of the sacrifi ce Jesus made on our behalf. It is good for us to remem-ber that Jesus was not just a nice guy who shared some good thoughts about love and kindness. He was God in fl esh, whose sacrifi ce on the cross paid the penalty for the sins of every person who ever has or will inhabit this planet. That’s how much our lives matter.

A second lesson of the Lenten season is that the community of faith is bigger than our labels. In heaven, I won’t be known as a Bap-tist, so it doesn’t make much sense for me to make that a litmus test of who I talk with, listen to and learn from in my current location. We don’t all have to do it the same way to be sharers in the kingdom of God.

And I didn’t just pull that out of my pocket.

Get ready to grillBY TANYA DAVIS [email protected]

Grab your friends and join us for our newest pro-gram, Path to the Plate: H e a l t h y G r i l l i n g Workshops.

Hosted by Texas A&M A g r i L i f e Extension Service and Wise County Extension’s Lead-ership Advisory Board, Family and Consumer Sci-ences and Ag and Natu-ral Resources planning groups; the two-night event is scheduled for April 27 and May 4 in the Wom-

en’s Building at the Wise County Fairgrounds.

The workshops are from 6 to 8 p.m.

We are targeting busy people who still want to make time for meal prepa-ration with a grilling twist and feel good about what they are feeding themselves and their family.

Whether you’re an old hand or a novice at outdoor grilling, we think you will benefi t from Path to the Plate.

Our goals are to promote Texas Agriculture and teach participants about the role agriculture plays in provid-ing proper nutrition and preventing food waste and to alleviate unsubstantiated fears about the food supply.

To get you ready for grill-ing season, cooking demon-strations will showcase how to use fresh fl avors to make healthy and delicious meals for you and your family.

Two different type meats (beef, pork, fi sh, poultry) along with fruits and veg-etables will be featured at each workshop session.

You will learn to maximize fl avor with the mysteries of marinades and rubs and smart grilling techniques and hear the facts of gas versus charcoal grills.

Generous samples of each recipe demonstrated are sure to satisfy your appetite.

Agriculture commodities will be featured as we con-nect agriculture production to health and nutrition.

The pre-registration fee is $15 per person for one session or $25 per person for both sessions. The fee includes recipes, brochures, recipe samples, goody bags and door prizes.

Call the Extension offi ce, 940-627-3341, to reserve your spot. Space is limited.

Sponsors of Path to the Plate include Texas Beef Council, Cargill, Texas Pork Producers, First Financial Bank, First State Bank, Legend Bank and The Com-munity Bank.

I hope you will join us to gain tips, tools and tastes that will put you ahead of the pack this grilling season.
