Last week, our text ended with a verse no one seems to give much attention to, it’s a verse that seems tacked on to the meat of the narrative of the healing of Tabitha. Do you remember it at all? Acts 9: 43 reads, “Meanwhile, he [Peter] stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.” There’s a great deal of significance and foreshadowing in that one verse, if you will think on it for a while. At least 3 times in Acts is Peter’s sojourn with Simon the tanner mentioned. Why? Peter stayed with so many people on his various journeys, why is this one singled out, not once but 3 times? Perhaps the clue is in Simon’s profession. He is a tanner, an unclean profession if there ever was one. He handles dead carcasses, which makes him ritually unclean, and the smell!!! He could never completely wash away the scent of curing leather and tanning hides. He stunk. Most people avoided him. Peter was his guest. It makes me wonder how many blessings I have missed by determining who was clean or unclean, or how many times my upturned nose has made me miss a chance to be a blessing. This week, even Peter who has stayed with Simon, will come face to face with his preconceived notions of who is welcome. Three times a sheet like thing will descend and three times, he will feel his stomach turn. Who turns our stomachs? What might God have to say about that? Amen.
