(6-foot-long) 1 x 6. Apply two

coats of paint using a small

roller. Allow each coat to dry.

2. Using a pencil and a tape

measure, lightly mark each

foot and the half and quarter

points. Paint the marks using

a small brush and black paint

in a flat finish. Allow to dry.

3. Secure a number stencil

(#106943) next to each foot

mark, and stencil using black

paint. Remove the stencil,

and touch up as needed.

When dry, seal the entire

Measuring Upboard with clear Polycrylic

Tailgate in Style1. Determine the length

and width of the top of the

basket (#201836) from the

outside edges. Cut a piece

of 1⁄4-inch plywood to fit. (A

Lowe’s employee can cut

the board for you.) Sand

rough edges.

2. Measure and mark 31⁄2

inches in from each short

edge of the board and 1⁄2

inch in from each long

edge. Then drill a 1⁄4-inch-

diameter hole at each of

these two marks.

3. Stain the board as

desired, and allow to dry.

Apply a coat of clear gloss

polyurethane, and let dry.

4. Remove the cloth liner,

and pull out the drawstring.

Cut the string in half.

Reinsert the cloth liner

with the drawstring hole

at the back of the basket.

5. At the back of the basket,

measure 1 inch below the

rim and 31⁄2 inches from

each side. Mark these two

points on the liner, both

inside and outside the

basket. Use utility scissors

to cut a 1⁄2-inch-long slit at

each of the four marks.

6. Insert a drawstring

piece into each outside

slit, through the basket,

and then through the inside

slit. Place the wooden lid

on top of the basket, and

secure it by pulling the

drawstrings through the

drilled holes. Tie in a

bow to secure.

1. To make each pinwheel,

cut an 8-inch-square piece

of paintable wallpaper

(#101440). Embellish both

sides with paint. Let dry.

2. Using heavy-duty garden

shears, cut a 16-inch piece

of a 1⁄4-inch-diameter dowel.

Spray-paint the dowel, and

allow to dry. Place one end of

the dowel into a cup holding

1 inch of water to soften the

tip for a thumbtack.

3. Lightly mark a straight

line from one corner of

the wallpaper piece to the

opposite corner. Repeat to

form an X. Cut along these

lines with utility scissors,

stopping 1⁄2 inch from the

center (each of the four

cuts will be about 41⁄2

inches long).

4. Pull one corner of

the wallpaper piece

to the center, and then

secure with masking tape.

Repeat with the three

remaining corners. Cut a

1-inch-diameter circle from

the wallpaper, and secure it

to the center of the pinwheel

with a thumbtack. (You also

could use a pushpin.)

5. Attach the pinwheel to

the dowel by pushing the

thumbtack into the softened

dowel end. Avoid pressing it

in completely, leaving space

for the pinwheel to spin.

Patriotic PinwheelsShow your colors with a bevy of these festive pinwheels.

Good To KnowYou can create more than

90 pinwheels with one roll

of wallpaper, or you

could use the leftovers

to line drawers.

STEP-BY-STEPGeneral: To create four 12-inch-square trivets, cut the plywood into four equalsquares. For four 6-inch-squaretrivets, cut the 1⁄2- x 6-inchboard into four equal squares.A Lowe’s employee can cutthe wood for you; there’s nocharge for the first two cuts. Step 1: Place your tiles in aplastic bag, and wrap it with a drop cloth. Use a hammer to break the tiles into pieces.Be careful of sharp edges.

LowesCreativeIdeas.com 11

Then, gently run a dampsponge in one direction overthe top of the trivet to clean it.Use a towel or rag to removeany remaining grout. It willtake the grout approximately24 hours to fully set, so yourguests may need to placetheir new trivet on a piece of newspaper or cardboardfor the trip home.Step 4: Once the trivet is completely dry, attach feltpads to the underside to protect your countertops.

Step 2: Use the broken tilepieces to create a pattern onyour piece of wood. Once you are satisfied with the design, use a glue gun to attach the tiles to the wood. Step 3: Wear gloves to workwith the grout. Dip a trowel ormargin float into the premixedsanded grout, and smear athick layer across your design.Wipe off excess, and wait 10 minutes. Run the trowelover the top of the tiles to remove any excess grout.

Step 1: In the center of a

drop cloth, measure and then

lightly mark a 33-inch square

using a pencil. Lightly draw

lines to create nine equal

interior squares, each one

measuring 11 inches.

Step 2: Place pieces of

painter’s tape along the

outer edges of the square

and centered on the interior-

square lines (leaving 3⁄4 inch

of tape on each side of the

lines). Measure 11⁄2 inches

from the tape on the square’s

outer edges, and then apply

another border of tape.

Step 3: Using a foam brush,

paint the nine squares

and the square’s border

between the pieces of

painter’s tape. A dabbing

motion works best. Allow to

dry. Paint additional coats

as needed, and remove

the tape when paint is

Step 1: Cut the 1 x 2 into

one 32-inch-long piece and

two 151⁄4-inch-long pieces.

Arrange the pieces in an X

shape, and join them from the

underside using flat corner

braces and the included

hardware. The braces will

support the center dowel to

be added later.

Step 2: Using a pencil, mark

2 inches from each end of

the X and at the center of the

long board. Place a piece

of scrap wood underneath

the project. Drill a 1-inch-

diameter hole, centered

widthwise, through the wood

at each mark.

Step 3: Cut five 8-inch-long

pieces from the dowel. Apply

a small amount of construction

adhesive inside the drilled

holes. Insert a dowel piece

into each hole, sanding the

end as needed to fit. Allow

adhesive to dry. Secure the

four outside dowels from

the underside with a mending

hardware, making sure one

screw is fastened through

each dowel piece. The

mending plates will stabilize

the project and secure the

outside dowels. Attach a PVC

using adhesive. Allow to dry.

Step 4: Sand any rough

wooden edges, and sand

the PVC to lightly roughen the

❉ DECORATING Window Treatments

» There are many ways

to do this without the

high cost or hassle:

■ Mix patterns and

fabrics, as shown here.

■ Paint a design on

cotton panels, as shown

on the opposite page.

■ Create a pretty and

functional tieback out

of ribbon, rope, or a

piece of fabric.

■ Hem panels to the

length of café curtains,

which only cover the

lower half of the window.

■ Add decorative trim to

the edges of panels.

22 Lowe’s Creative Ideas

How can I get a customlook?

Curtains1O1Do you want window treatments that wow, but

need a bit of inspiration? Consider these helpful hints to spark your own creative approach.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN FRANCIS

For a romantic touch, this dreamy sheer(#241565) adds softnessand volume to a striped panel (#213443). The two panels hang on a decorative rod (#169309)and are swept to oneside with a strip of drop cloth material serving as a tieback.

Look for new options in drapery hardware at your local Lowe’s.

Howhigh doI hangthe rod?» Consider these

pointers when choosing

rod height:

■ Hang a rod as high as

possible to make a low

ceiling seem higher.

■ Position a rod just

above the window, as

shown here, to make a

room with high ceilings

feel more intimate.

■ Raise the eye a bit by

hanging the rod halfway

between the window

and the ceiling.

Good To KnowLayering window

treatments can help with

energy costs. A heavier

fabric can insulate the

window better.

Tab-top panels (#170175)are embellished with a leaf design using a stencil and fabric paint. The panels hangon a wooden rod (#42772)with finials (#27969*) and overlay a shade (#120398)made of sustainable bamboo.A variety of stencils can be found in the paint department at Lowe’s.*Availability varies by market.

❉ DECORATING Window Treatments

» Think about how a

cornice, which crowns

a window and imparts

horizontal dimension,

could help you:

■ add an architectural

element to a plain wall.

■ create a slightly more

formal appearance.

■ hide a basic rod that

holds the curtains.

Whywould Iuse acornice?

This playful look is perfect for a child’s bedroom. Thelightweight white plastic cornice (#87589*) was firstcoated with plastic primer(#57601) and then paintedbrilliant blue (#244148) tocomplement a pair of striped curtains (#242109)on a wooden rod.*Availability varies by market.

» If you want to add

interest using patterns,

but you don’t want them

to be overpowering, try

these options:

■ Choose a patterned

valance or café curtain

(shorter pieces of fabric

instead of long panels).

■ Paint a simple shade

with stripes, as shown

here, or any other design.

■ Add a patterned ribbon

for trim on a plain panel.

❉How can I add subtlepattern?

A Country French toilevalance (#25944) tops a white roller shade (#43231)painted with black stripes.

Good To KnowTo create a striped roller shade,

first clean it with mineral spirits

to help the paint adhere. Tape

off the stripes, spray with plastic

primer (#57601), and then

apply interior latex paint

or spray paint.

❉ The two console tables feature sleek under-mounted sinks with elegant tabletops and polished-chrome legs.

This couple adores their Craftsman bungalow,

and the outdated master bath was the home’s only

flaw. “The existing bath, with its plastic whirlpool

tub and pale pink tiles, never fit the spirit of our

house,” the homeowner says. With this remodel,

the combination of vintage style

and modern luxuries creates a

bath that blends perfectly with

the rest of the home. What’s

vintage? Tiny white floor tiles,

white subway tiles, and mirrored

console tables. Luxury? Think

heated floors, towel warmers,

and an innovative shower system.

The couple couldn’t be happier

with the brand-new, yet 1900s-

inspired, space. “It’s luxurious,

but design appropriate, as if it’s

always been here.”

his family was running out of room inside the house, so

they took a fresh look at their blank-slate garage. The large

space was mostly unused for anything beyond parking the

car. They evaluated their needs and decided to create a

new pet area and a corner for the kids’ toys, helping to keep the

indoors cleaner and clutter-free. Now the garage is the perfect

spot to bathe the family dog, and the children can play outside

of the house, even if it’s rainy, in the bright corner dedicated to

storage and safety. Consider your own family’s needs—office,

laundry, or craft area. You may have more room than you think.

Personality With Purpose

Today’s garage has come a

long way from yesterday’s

version. What used to be

simply a place to store cars,

and possibly some garden

tools and equipment, has

evolved into a multitasking

space customized to fit

your needs.

Living space can be tight,

so it makes sense to ask more

of your garage. When the

cars are parked outside,

a garage can double as a

workout room, a crafts area,

a space for pet care, or a

place to gather for a good

game of cards. Think about

designing your garage for

these multiple uses.

For a successful modern

garage, storage and safety

are two important aspects to

consider. Check out products

that allow for storage on the

walls and even the ceiling.

And be sure that anything

dangerous to a child or

animal is carefully locked

away and out of reach.

Once safety concerns are

answered, it’s possible to

have as much fun planning

this space as any room

in the house.

THIS MONTH:

Washington, D.C.

FutureBuildersNew grants promote the education, community service, and safety goals of SkillsUSA.

Lowe’s and SkillsUSA are building

something together: greater opportunities

for students. Through its Charitable and

Educational Foundation, Lowe’s will

contribute $500,000 in 2007 to educate

the next generation of contractors,

builders, and community volunteers

by offering grants through SkillsUSA.

The partners unveiled the project with

an event held earlier this year at the

National Association of Home Builders

headquarters in Washington, D.C.

As a national nonprofit organization,

SkillsUSA works with teachers, industry

representatives, and students who are

preparing for careers in trade, technical,

and skilled service occupations to help

ensure a skilled workforce.

The Lowe’s grants will be awarded to

selected schools and SkillsUSA chapters.

Designed to further relationships among

students, local contractors, and Lowe’s

stores, the grants are divided into three

groups: education, community service,

and safety. Lowe’s presented educational

grants of $10,000 to 20 schools in April

and May. The winning schools showed

innovative ways to improve the

SkillsUSA experience and awareness

of its programs by combining efforts

with their local Lowe’s stores. Also in

April, community service grants of

$10,000 went to 10 SkillsUSA chapters

that created projects to engage students

and Lowe’s employees in improving

their communities. Finally, Lowe’s and

These students look forward to learning skills that could shape their futures.

SkillsUSA are working with Occupational

Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

to provide safety training as part of the

SkillsUSA CareerSafe program. Students

can participate in an in-store training

event and receive an $18 voucher to

complete CareerSafe training online.

With CareerSafe, students will receive a

card from OSHA and learn fundamental

safety guidelines in the workplace.

“Through grants to local chapters and

support of chapter community service

projects, we hope to help further educate

and empower young people who will

become the contractors, industry leaders,

and community volunteers of the future,”

says Larry D. Stone, chairman of the

Lowe’s foundation.

In addition, U.S. Department of

Education Assistant Secretary for

Vocational and Adult Education Troy

Justesen has met with SkillsUSA and

Lowe’s representatives to discuss the

skills that employers seek in future

contractors, builders, and employees.

“SkillsUSA helps students develop

abilities in all four skills areas highlighted

by employers,” says Tim Lawrence,

SkillsUSA executive director. “Our

students and teachers are champions

at work. These grants will allow them

to build lots of things together.”

Although this is Lowe’s first year

to award grants, the company

first became involved

with SkillsUSA

six years ago,

assisting with the

annual National

Leadership

and Skills

Conference

and donating

lumber to the

carpentry contest.

SkillsUSA first

began in 1965 as the

Vocational Industrial Clubs

of America, renaming itself in 2004.

Its mission includes educating

students in 80 trade areas including

carpentry, computer-aided drafting,

and precision machining. For more
