The Second Greatest Commandment

Review: The last three weeks we talked about:

1.  FBC Cumming 1*3*5*1 and how it applies to our BFG. Our objective is not to

teach for knowledge, but rather to teach for obedience.

2.  Obedience is better than sacrifice. A story about Sauls disobedience found in 1Samuel 15.

3.  The greatest commandment. Jesus response to the question, What is the greatest

commandment?

Review:

Would anyone like to try to repeat from memory Matthew 22:37-39?

Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your

soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.

And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.

Lets review the story from last week by retelling it as a group. We want to retell it as faithfully as we can to the story from the Bible. We do not want to add to it orleave out anything important. Who will get us started?

Background:

The event in todays story occurs during the life of Jesus. Jesus mentions four keycharacters is the story he tells: 1) a man we do not know anything about the man, not his

race nor his religious background; 2) a priest a religious leader that served in the temple;3) a Levite another religious leader that served as an assistant to the priest; and 4) a

Samaritan a man of mixed ancestry, Jewish and non-Jewish, they were hated be the Jews.

The Second Greatest Commandment

Luke 10:25-37

An expert in the law, or more specifically an expert in the religious law of the Jewish

people, asked Jesus what must I do to inherit eternal life?

Jesus responded with a two-part question, What does the law say? and How do you read

it?

The man replied by quoting a verse that every Jew would know, Love the Lord your God

with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all yourmind; and he quoted another verse, Love your neighbor as yourself.

Jesus told the man he had answered correctly. He told him that if he did these things he

would live.

But the man wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus. And who is my neighbor?

Jesus told him a story to answer his question. The story is known as the parable of the Good

Samaritan. This is the story Jesus told the man.

A man was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho when a group of robbers attacked him. They

beat him and stole all he had, even his clothes. They left him beside the road bleeding and

half dead.

A priest happened by and saw the man. He passed by on the other side of the road. A Levite

also came by and saw the man and he passed by on the other side of the road too.

But a Samaritan came by, saw the man and took pity on him. He stopped and went to him.

He bandaged his wounds. Then he put the man in his own donkey and brought him to an

inn and took care of him. The next day he took some of his own money and gave it to the

innkeeper. He asked the innkeeper to care for the man while he was away and that when he

returned, he would reimburse the innkeeper any additional expense he might have.

The Jesus asked the man, Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the manwho fell into the hands of robbers?

The expert in the law replied, The one who had mercy on him.

Jesus told him, Go and do likewise.

This concludes this story from the Bible.

Retelling the story

Lets review this story by retelling it as a group. We want to retell it as faithfully as we canto the story from the Bible. We do not want to add to it or leave out anything important.

Who will get us started?

Questions:

The questions and discussion about the second greatest commandment should be focused

beyond understanding what it means to be a good neighbor; and instead, should address

practical ways we can show our neighbors our love for them. The purpose of this study is to

do those things that demonstrate our love to others.

What did Jesus say was the second greatest commandment?

What was the mans question?

How did the man say show that he had knowledge of what he should be doing?

Can you list some real life examples of how we can love our neighbor as ourselves.

Jesus say that the man had answered correctly, but what did Jesus indicate that the man

still needed to do?

How did Jesus answer the question, Who is my neighbor?

What did you learn from the story that Jesus told about the Good Samaritan?

How can you put it into practice this week?

Lets review the memory verses, Matthew 22:37-39

Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your

soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And

the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.

Deuteronomy 6:5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul andwith all your strength.
