Truth is the backbone of democracy and we cannot allow it to be concealed.
Since I wrote to you yesterday, CREW moved swiftly to respond to the emerging and troubling evidence that President Trump may have violated criminal obstruction of justice laws by firing FBI Director Comey.
Federal obstruction of justice statutes prohibit corrupt interference with an investigation for the purpose of impeding its outcome. It is paramount that the FBI investigate President Trump's firing of Director Comey to determine whether it was done in an effort to block the investigation into any ties between Russia and his campaign.
Such an investigation would be a momentous step, but we believe that there is no acceptable alternative to an immediate and credible investigation to resolve these questions. The public needs to know the truth.

In light of the highly suspicious termination of FBI Director James Comey, the need for an outside, independent actor is even more urgent.
