Davis as the town’s building inspector, health officer, zoning administrator and code enforce-ment officer.

Polk County decided to al-locate funds to hire a new economic development director in next year’s budget, which begins July 1.

Traber says his time so far in Columbus has been spent looking into possible downtown renovations, historical designa-tions, zoning matters and code enforcement.

“I’m trying to initiate new projects that will improve the life and vitality of the down-town area,” Traber said.

Traber also said since Co-lumbus is the county seat, he hopes to integrate the town into Polk County’s newly orga-nized economic development commission’s efforts to help strengthen Columbus’ tax base and tourism.

Traber said he wants to re-juvenate Columbus’ former downtown merchants associa-tion.

“I love the job and the peo-ple,” Traber said, “and am hop-ing we can get everybody to work together.”

Town officials say they are pleased with their decision to hire a part-time planner and Traber fits the town’s needs.

“Larry is doing a tremendous job for us so far,” said Colum-bus Town Manager Jonathan Kanipe. “As a semi-retired architect, he has a wealth of experience from both a land planning and design perspective and has really helped us develop some good projects that are also feasible.”

Kanipe also said Traber is handling the regular business of zoning permits and zoning ordinance interpretation and is doing a great job with that as well.

Traber is in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays and also works with the town’s plan-ning board.

Kidnapping added to Packer’s assault chargesby Leah Justice

The Polk Coun-ty Sheriff’s Office has added a charge of kidnapping to the charges faced by Christopher Eu-gene Packer, 25, of 156 Eagle Nest Road, Columbus.

Packer’s kid-napping charge is added to those he was charged with when he was arrested on May 11, including felony assault by strangulation, misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor communicat-ing threats, according to Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrest warrants.

Packer is accused of stran-gling, head-butting, biting and threatening to kill a woman

during a domestic incident alleged to have occurred on Tuesday, May 10.

P a c k e r w a s being held at the Polk County Jail originally on a mandatory 48-hour hold per do-mestic violence laws. The addi-tional kidnapping

charge brought against Packer on Friday, May 13 also requires another 48-hour hold in jail.

Following the second 48-hour hold, which ended on Sunday, May 15, Packer bond was set at $23,000, according to the sheriff’s office. He was released Monday, May 16 at about 10 a.m. via a property bond, sheriff’s of-ficials said Monday.

Welcome to the

Hanukkah & Kwanzaa

A Special Thank You To All Our Sponsors!

Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is a Jewish celebration that is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration, most notably marked with the lighting of the menorah. The menorah is a candleholder that holds nine candles; the main eight candles and a “helper” candle called a shamash, which is used to light all eight can-dles. This tradition is derived from a story found in the Talmud about a man named Judas Maccabaeus, or Judah Maccabee. Around 170 B.C., the ruler Epiphanes tried to force the Greek gods upon the Jews. When the Jews would not worship the pagans, Epiphanes raided and destroyed the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. After seven years of fight-ing, Maccabee regained control, and the Temple was restored. The famous story states that only a small vial of oil was found to light the eternal lamps, yet they were blessed and burned for eight days, giving the Jewish people enough time to acquire more oil for the lamps. The symbolic lighting of the menorah occurs at sundown for the eight days during Hanukkah. Children also trade gifts and play with games and toys, such as a driedel. Special foods, such as fried potato cakes and fried donuts, are served during Hanukkah. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Professor Maulana Karenga, a Black Studies professor from California State University in Long Beach, California. Kwanzaa is a celebration of the African family and culture. It begins on December 26 and ends on January 1. The name Kwan-zaa comes from the Swahili term which means “first fruits of harvest.” Much like the menorah of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa has seven symbolic candles lit each night symbolizing aspects of the culture. Each night, one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa-- unity, self-determination, col-lective work, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith--is discussed. Kwanzaa is also represented by seven symbols--crops, a mat, a candleholder, the seven candles, ears of corn, gifts, and the Kikome Chad Umoja (The Unity Cup).

Roberto Taft fires to first as coach Ty Stott looks on during Polks 5-4 win over Forbush Friday (photo by Dan Hecht)

sports 10 tuesday, may 17, 2011 tryon daily Bulletin / the World’s smallest daily neWspaper

Polk baseball rallies in seventh, eliminates Forbush 5-4 in second round of state 2A playoffs by Daniel Hecht

It was the scenario all young boys dream about from the time they start playing tee ball. State playoffs, tie score, bottom of the seventh, the winning run on third base and a chance to play the role of hero in front of a large hometown crowd.

Heady stuff for any high school ball-p l aye r, and here was Wol-verine sopho-m o r e A l e c Philpott, pre-paring to step into the bat-ter ’s box to experience that exact dream sequence in real life. It’s times like this when it wouldn’t hurt to have your big brother around to offer some words of wisdom.

Fortunately for Philpott and the rest of the Wolverines, Alec’s senior sibling and team-mate Tyler Philpott was on hand to provide some calming advice.

“I told him to just smile, relax and have fun,” said the senior Philpott following Polk County’s dramatic come from behind victory Friday, May 13 in Columbus. “Just smile – it makes it a lot easier on your-

self.”Smile Philpott did, and that

smile quickly turned to shouts of jubilation, as the sophomore stepped to the plate and ripped a Josh Faircloth fastball into right center field, driving home the winning run and ending the game in spectacular walk-off fashion.

“I just fell into the zone at the end,” com-m e n t e d t h e younger Phil-pott, clearly understating h i s a l l - s t a r seventh inning performance. In addition to his heroics at the plate, Phil-pott contrib-

uted two spectacular defensive gems at shortstop in the top of the inning to keep Polk within striking distance.

The theatrical finish was just icing on the cake, as fans in both bleachers were treated to a dandy of a contest. Polk jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, as Andre Overholt and Joel Booker both scored on a two-RBI double to deep center by the young Philpott, who wound up 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Forbush came to life in the top of the third. Polk starter Roberto Taft gave up four hits,

including a blistering double by Mountain Valley Athletic Conference player of the year

Caleb Brawley, as the Falcons took the lead by a score of 3-2.

(Continued on page 11)

“There is definitely some magic here [at PCHS]. Magic that has been developed with success, developed over time – I felt like we had that magic tonight.”

Polk managed to draw back to even in their half of the third. Leadoff hitter Overholt legged out an infield single, quickly swiped second and then scored on a booming sacrifice fly to deep center by Booker, knotting the score at three all.

An Overholt throwing er-ror, a single by shortstop Ben Temple and an intentional walk loaded the bases with Falcons in the top of the sixth. DH Dustin Moore wrestled an inside pitch from Taft off the handle into shallow right for an RBI single, putting Forbush back on top 4-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, down by a run and just one out away from elimination, Booker stepped into the box and came up clutch, lashing a hard ground ball just under the glove of shortstop

Temple. With the tying run at first, big brother Tyler strode to the plate and crushed a Faircloth fastball to deep left field for an RBI double. He took third as Booker scored to tie the game at four.

As the senior Philpott left the field in favor of a pinch runner, he took his younger brother aside and whispered the game-winning wisdom that contrib-uted to the storybook finish.

“There is definitely some magic here,” said Polk head coach Ty Stott, referring to the Wolverine’s perfect 12-0 play-off record at home. “Magic that has been developed with suc-cess, developed over time – I felt like we had that magic to-night.” The Wolverines travel to Canton this afternoon, Tuesday May 17, to take on the Bears of Pisgah High School as they advance to the second round of the state 2A playoffs.

Learn to quilt an instant garden beginning May 21Marilyn Doheny, interna-

tionally famous quilting author and artist, will hold her second annual spring “Over the Top” quilting retreat May 21 - 28 at the Melrose Inn in Tryon.

Students will make 12 di-verse fan designs in the first three days using innovative techniques, featuring the use of Marilyn’s 9 Degree Circle Wedge Rulers. Students will turn their fans into garden ele-ments like butterflies, flowers, dragon flies and snails on days four, five and six. The quilting

retreat event starts with a Sat-urday night celebration dinner where students from around the world meet one another, then continues with an overview of how each day will unfold. The title of the retreat is “Spectacu-lar Fan Sampler.”

Doheny, with more than 40 years experience, selected the historic Melrose Inn to hold her quilting retreats after her 20-year search for a perfect location. All retreats are held at Doheny’s new home, the Mel-rose Inn in Tryon, built in 1889.

To get more information, go to www.melrose-inn.com and click on “Quilting Retreats.” Her classes attract students from throughout the world and are open to local area quilters who prefer to commute each day rather than select the all-inclusive overnight package.

For more information, or to reserve your class, call 828-859-0234. Melrose Inn is lo-cated at 55 Melrose Avenue in Tryon. Space is limited.

Keep me grounded right hereSpring has sprung and sum-

mer is about to pounce on ev-eryone. Excitement fills the ever increasing warm air as people look forward to the festivities, places, and smells of the summer ahead of us. Ah, yes, the smells. My personal favorite happens to be manure.

The smell of manure is one of those indescribable odors. Its scent is mostly associated with summer for me. A smel l you love or hate, or you’ve never thought about the smell of animal excretions. Either way, it is a smell that grounds you, and leaves a mark on the ol’ nose hairs at the same time.

I believe it reconnects some-thing in each one of us back to the earth. Back to what’s real, getting dirty, to hard work and reaping the benefit of all your toil.

I’ve been thinking lately, maybe the farmer’s market needs some farm animals there for that very reason. The market is a good Saturday morning routine, which several people really enjoy. You get outside in the fresh air after a long week of work and responsi-bility. People who have worked the soil, the chicken flock, the goat udder, the bee hive, or the piece of wood turned into artwork love showing off their handiwork to consumers. For some, it’s a hobby, for others, a bit of a way of life. Let’s all go and support them, shall we?

All we need is some farm animals with their farm animal smell! Bring on the hoofs, the horns, the big beady eyes and the smell of manure penetrating the warm summer breeze. Bring hand sanitizer and animal treats while you’re at it.

Come on - McDonald’s does it. It’s called a marketing tech-nique. The smell of burgers and fries is purposefully flown into the air to conjure up an appetite in would-be connoisseurs of

fast food.It works, too, might I add. I’m

sure there’s not a person alive who hasn’t stopped in their tracks to go purchase some food at the very smell that lingers before their nose.

The unique smell of manure, hay and some freshly brewed coffee being sold at the market, wafting through the air, might

just be the trick to gain some attraction. It’s more grounding than the fluores-cent lights of a store that sells

food from the other side of the globe. You don’t know who grew it, how long it’s been there or how it’s been zapped to maintain its color and freshness.

Give me food that still has dirt on it. Food that smells like the earth and was birthed out of the earth for our benefit - sometimes the very morning you buy it. Give me grassroots people from a grassroots county, grassroots food, and grassroots manure from grassroots animals.

And throw in some kids run-ning around while you’re at it.

Give me grassroots kids who play with bugs and dirt, love animals, ride horses and kids who enjoy getting dirty for their play time. Kids who are outside playing sports, digging in the creek, frying ants with a magni-fying glass or running after each other for no reason other than a sugar buzz.

Give me some youngsters who are learning to play music, like the piano or the saxophone or guitar. Just as my son (who’s putting on his first recital this week) uses his creativity on an instrument to ground himself. Give me kids who enjoy the simplicity of the piano being played for the enjoyment of its listeners; kids who stand there at the market playing music to raise money for music trips. We may have a great composer in our midst and not even know it yet.

All of that came from manure. Yeah, manure really sets me at ease. It signals summertime, farmers markets, fairs, music, festivals and hopefully slowing down just a bit to take it all in

while we can. There’s noth-ing like homegrown food and creations from some grassroots people and artisans. And it just so happens to be here in our neck of the woods – good ol’ Polk County.

All except for the manure at the farmers market. A man can

dream a little, can’t he?Chris Jakubowicz lives in

Columbus with his wife and children. His bi-weekly column will focus on how he and his family are trying to get back to their grassroots. Jakubowicz can be reached by e-mail at [email protected].

RVPC sponsors Hunter Pace Memorial Day weekendMembers of the River Valley Pony Club. (photo submitted)

The River Valley Pony Club (RVPC) and the Western North Carolina Hunter Pace Series will hold a Memorial Day Weekend Hunter Pace on Sunday, May 29 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (rain date will be June 5). The course starts on Collinsville Road in Colum-bus and traverses the CETA and NPA trails, as well as numerous private properties.

Both field hunter and trail rider divisions will be offered with the field hunter division having an additional, longer loop. Riders must select their division at registration to earn a competitive rating. Awards will be given for first through sixth places in both divisions with Western Carolina Hunter Pace Series points awarded. Lunch is provided to paying riders and for

a small fee for all others. The RVPC sponsors this an-

nual fundraising event each year. Proceeds from the event will ben-efit the members of River Valley Pony Club in support of the club’s educational and instructional programs for progressing through the United States Pony Club’s Standards and Rating System.

For questions, more informa-tion or to check updates about the Hunter Pace, visit www.rvpc.org or contact Dana Kind at 828-863-1359 or Kristen Billiu at 714-235-8326.

The course’s start and regis-tration are located in Columbus, near the intersection of Col-linsville Road and John Weaver Road. Children 12 and under must ride with an adult. Checks and cash only to be paid at reg-

istration on day of event. Checks should be made out to River Val-ley Pony Club.

Visit www.rvpc.org or www.WCHPace.org and click on the “Hunter Pace” link to access more information and entry forms / waivers. Print and fill out the entry form and bring it to the event. A parent or guardian must sign releases for youth under 18 or they will not be able to partici-pate. Waivers must be signed for CETA, NPA and the U.S. Pony Club. Riders must wear helmets and must bring evidence of a recent negative Coggins test.

Lunch will be held from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. and will be catered by the Fabulous Doo-Daddies Cuisine Team.
