1.04 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

A. Handrails and railing assemblies attachments and anchorages shall be designed in accordance with the following:

1. Minimum concentrated and uniformly distributed loads for appropriate types of facilities, their point of application and deflection criteria, as specified in ASTM E 985. Tests for compliance shall be in accordance with ASTM E 935.

2. The maximum bending moment resulting from the application of a concentrated load of 1.112 kN in accordance with the requirements of ADAAG.

B. The height and configuration of handrails shall meet the requirements of ASTM E 985, ADAAG and NFPA 101.

1.05 SUBMITTALS

A. Comply with Section 01 33 00.

B. Shop Drawings: Indicate profiles, sizes, connection attachments, anchorage, size and type of fasteners, and accessories.

C. Samples: Submit one 300 mm long sample of handrail. Submit two samples, of elbow, tee, wall bracket, escutcheon and end stop.

1.06 FIELD MEASUREMENTS

A. Verify field measurements prior to fabrication.

1.07 MOCKUP

A. Provide mock up of each handrail and railings under provision of Section 01 40 00.

B. Construct in-situ mock-up three meters in length including jointings, bonds, attachments and finishes where instructed by the Engineer.

C. Locate where directed.

D. Mock up may not remain as part of work.

PART 2: PRODUCTS 2.01 STEEL RAILING SYSTEM COMPONENTS

A. Steel Tubing: ASTM A 500, Grade B ASTM A 501.

B. Steel Pipe: ASTM A 53, Grade B Schedule 40.

C. Stainless Steel Tubing: ASTM A 269.

D. Stainless Steel Pipe: ASTM A 312 M.

E. Rails and Posts: 50 mm diameter steel tubing pipe; welded joints.

F. Posts: 50 mm diameter steel tubing pipe; welded joints.

G. Fittings: Elbows, T-shapes, wall brackets, escutcheons; cast machined steel.

H. Mounting: Adjustable brackets and flanges, for bolting to concrete and masonry.

I. Exposed Fasteners: Flush countersunk screws or bolts consistent with design of railing.

J. Splice Connectors: Steel welding collars.

K. Galvanizing: To ASTM A 123, provide minimum 360 g/m² galvanized coating. Touch-up Primer for Galvanized Surfaces: SSPC Paint 20 Type I inorganic zinc rich.

L. Stainless Steel: To ASTM A 480; Type 304, 306.

M. Handrail: 50 mm diameter polished stainless steel.

N. Handrail: 50 mm diameter polished brass.

O. Fixings: To manufacturer's detail, polished stainless steel or brass or polished stainless steel or brass covering where exposed.

2.02 FABRICATION

A. Fit and shop assemble components in largest practical sizes for delivery to site.

B. Fabricate components with joints tightly fitted and secured. Provide spigots and sleeves to accommodate site assembly and installation.

C. Continuously seal joined pieces by continuous welds.

D. Provide anchors, plates and angles required for connecting railings to structure.

E. Exposed Mechanical Fastenings: Flush countersunk screws or bolts; unobtrusively located; consistent with design of component, except where specifically noted otherwise.

F. Supply components required for anchorage of fabrications. Fabricate anchors and related components of same material and finish as fabrication, except where specifically noted otherwise.

G. Exterior Components: Drill condensate drainage holes at bottom of members at locations that will not encourage water intrusion.

H. Grind exposed joints flush and smooth with adjacent finish surface. Make exposed joints butt tight, flush, and hairline. Ease exposed edges to small uniform radius.

I. Accurately form components to suit stairs and landings to each other and to building structure.

J. Accommodate for expansion and contraction of members and building movement without damage to connections or members.

K. Use factory formed bends and elbows free from necking and distortions.

PART 3: EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that field conditions are acceptable and are ready to receive work.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Clean and strip primed steel items to bare metal where site welding is required.

B. Supply items required to be cast into concrete, embedded in masonry or placed in partitions, with setting templates to appropriate sections.

3.03 INSTALLATION

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Install components plumb and level, accurately fitted, free from distortion or defects.

C. Anchor railings to structure with anchors, and plates.

D. Field weld anchors as indicated on shop drawings. Touch-up welds with primer. Grind welds smooth.

E. Conceal bolts and screws wherever possible. Where not concealed, use flush countersunk fastenings.

F. Assemble with spigots and sleeves to accommodate tight joints and secure installation.

3.04 ERECTION TOLERANCES

A. Maximum Variation from Plumb: 6 mm per story, non-cumulative.

B. Maximum Offset from True Alignment: 6 mm.

C. Maximum Out-of-Position: 6 mm.

3.05 CLEANING

A. Comply with Section 01 77 00.

B. Clean welds and damaged coatings and apply two coats of touch-up primer.

C. Clean all materials as recommended by the manufacturer.
