The Highland Houseassisted living center onHarry Sauner Road inHillsboro hosted an openhouse recently to "reintro-duce" itself to the communi-ty.
The reason for the rein-troduction, said activitiescoordinator Linda Waits, is"there is a lot of new staff,"including herself, at thefacility, which prides itself inbeing equipped and outfittedto allow for a level of inde-pendence not typically foundin other facilities.
Admissions directorMichael Bradford echoedWaits and added that thefacility has been "revampingand updating" as well.
Bradford offered tours ofthe refreshed facility to openhouse visitors. Also offeredwere drinks, cookies, andwhole apple pies baked bykitchen staff and boxed up Pictured above is Michael Bradford, admissions director at Highland House assisted living facility on Harry

continued from Page 1for visitors to take home.He said the assisted-living
facility has a capacity for 39residents who are offered indi-vidual apartments from studiosize to a one-bedroom. Eachunit is equipped with its ownthermostat, bathroom and akitchenette with a microwave, sink, counter space, and asmall refrigerator/freezer.
Bradford said residents arefree to decorate their apartmenthow they want. Evidence ofthis was obvious as outsidemany of the doorways, markedby numbered, golden placards, sat decorations--an old tablewith a lacy doily and pictures, whimsical lawn ornaments, and other little knick-knacks ofhome. Bradford added that res-idents are welcome to havetheir pets as well.
The residence hallways arewide and equipped with safetybars and security lights. In asmall hallway an "internetcafe" is available to residents.Off another hallway is anentrance to a courtyard withswings, chairs, and a grill.
Bradford said HighlandHouse is a "completelyenclosed, secure facility."Residents are free to come andgo but no one comes in or outthe entrance doors without asecurity code, he said.
According to Bradford, thefacility also has its own beautysalon. Activities and outingsare available for residents toenjoy. Also available to resi-dents, and included in theirroom and board, is a laundryservice, various activities, andwellness programs.
As part of what is offered toresidents there is a communitygathering area--with plush fur-niture and a fireplace--whereresidents can listen to music, play games, and attend churchservices, Bradford said.
A cafe-style dining roomflanks the entrance lobby.Bradford said residents areencouraged to eat in the diningroom for the interaction witheach other and with staff butthey are also able to receivetheir meals in their apartments.
Bradford said HighlandHouse offers a 24-hour nursingstaff that check on residentsevery two hours. It is a privatepay facility but VA aid andassistance are available as well,he said. Respite rooms areavailable for shorter stays.

DEAR ABBY: I'm becom-ing increasingly concernedabout my wife, "Traci," andher influence over our 3-year-old son, "Grant." I love havinga son, as does Traci, althoughshe always wanted a little girl.Unfortunately, we haven't beenable to have another child, andmy wife's focus on our sonappears to be somewhatskewed.
Over the last few months,Traci has been buying Grantmore and more feminine cloth-ing. I'm OK with a pink shirtnow and then, but lately it hasgotten out of hand. She hasbeen close to dressing Grant indrag. My wife says not to takeit so seriously, but it bothersme when people tell us wehave a "lovely little girl."
I'm worried that what mywife is doing will have anadverse effect on my son, butat the same time I need toknow if I'm overreacting. --IT'S A BOY!
DEAR IT'S A BOY!: Myexperts tell me that there is nodata that demonstrates whatyour wife is doing will causegender confusion in your son. What's important is that youtalk to her and express yourconcerns privately. Your littleboy is at an age where he cansense stress in your marriage, and THAT could cause himproblems later on. Moreimportant than what clotheshe's wearing is decreasing thelevel of stress on the boy.
DEAR ABBY: I'm dating aman who is genuine, consider-ate, thoughtful, humble, responsible, committed to hisfamily, and we have greatphysical chemistry.Unfortunately, there is no intel-lectual/social "connection."
We have never had an intel-
lectually stimulating conversa-tion, and I'm not sure he's evensomeone I would have pickedto be friends with, although wedo share interests in the out-doors and our faith. I feel emo-tionally secure with him andkeep wondering if I'm beingoverly critical or choosing tostay in a relationship out offear of not finding someonebetter in time to start a family.(I'm in my early 30s.) Pleaseadvise. -- INDECISIVE INPLEASANTON, CALIF.
DEAR INDECISIVE: Tobe frank, no one person has"everything." If intellectualstimulation is the quality that'smost important to you, then theman you have been dating isn'tthe one for you. The fine quali-ties you listed would weighheavily in his favor with manywomen. What you must askyourself is whether or not youcan be with him and find intel-lectual stimulation elsewherewhen you feel you need it.

Can it really be August? Most gar-deners will agree that July seemedmore like August this year because ofthe high temperatures. The rains havebeen spotty for us in this neck of thewoods. The last big storm simply part-ed and went around us!
The tomatoes are finally starting toripen! Did you know that temperatureplays a very important part in theripening process? Lycopene, the pig-ment that gives ripe tomatoes their redcolor, is only produced at ambient tem-peratures of between 50 and 85degrees Fahrenheit. The optimum tem-perature for lycopene production is 68-77 degrees Fahrenheit. Any great devi-ation from these temperature rangeswill mean that tomatoes won’t turn red.Sometimes when it gets quite hot, tomatoes on the vine may have a yel-lowish orange look. If practical for thesize of your operations, it might be bet-ter to pick them in the pink stage andlet them ripen indoors in cooler tem-peratures. Tomatoes need warmth, notlight, to ripen, so there’s no need to putthem in direct sunlight. Place them outof direct sunlight where the tempera-ture is 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit.
As I walk around my garden withmy Tomato “map”, yes…I have tomake a map so that when my husbandasks, “What tomato is this?”, I can givehim a quick answer. Early in the ripen-ing process I sometimes take a markerto the garden with me and put the num-ber on the tomatoes as I harvest. Iplanted 25 different varieties of toma-toes this year, so I need all the help Ican get when it comes to tomato iden-
tification!Your Gardening Checklist for
August includes:• Water and weed • Fertilize annuals, especially thosein containers. Remove spent annualsand replace with new plants to keepbeds and containers fresh.• Divide irises and daylilies as theycomplete blooming.• Divide and transplant peonies.• Cut back yarrow, catmint, coreopsisand veronica by one-third when plantsstop flowering to encourage newfoliage and blooms.• Harvest herbs for freezing or dry-ing.• Re-edge beds.• Keep compost moist.• Do a final planting of vegetables forfall harvest: spinach, lettuce, kale andchard.• Check plants for signs of pests anddiseases.• Evaluate your garden with an eyefor improvements.• Collect seeds for next year’s gar-den.• Study bulb catalogs and order garlicand flowering bulbs to plant this fall.• Add extra fall-blooming perennialsto the garden• Cut flowers to bring indoors toenjoy.• Direct-seed turnips for a fall harvestPropagate strawberries or weed themand thin out runners.
Remember that a gardener can helpprevent problems with pests and dis-ease. Handling plants carefully, notworking among the plants when they
are wet, and routinely cleaning yourtools can help a great deal.Encouraging populations of beneficialinsects such as parasitic wasps and spi-ders is a great way to control Insectpests. Routinely inspect plants everyother day or so during the height of theseason to catch problems before theyget out of hand!
The accelerated gardening seasoncontinues to amaze me this year. Lastyear my Magic lilies were finishedblooming by August 25, but this yearthey started blooming on July 25! TheResurrection Lily is a member of theAmaryllis Family, which includesother well-known bulbs such as com-mon amaryllis, daylilies, daffodils, andsnowdrops. These lilies are easy togrow and naturalize readily. Magiclilies have strap-like leaves that emergein spring and die down by mid-sum-mer. No leaves are present during sum-mer months or when the blooms arise(hence the name Naked Lady or MagicLily). These lilies make excellent cutflowers as well as beautiful gardenplants.
Don’t forget to e-mail your garden-ing questions to Mike Hannah [email protected].
Have you counted the jars on yourcanning shelf? Are you running shorton some of your favorites? It’s time tomake your list for this year! TheMahaffey’s list includes: Bread andButter Pickles, Chili Sauce, Tomatojuice and Pepper Relish.

MATTERS OF THE HEARTNot only are brushing andflossing essential for goodoral health, they may also begood for the heart. So say theresearchers who found thatfailure to brush one's teethtwice a day increases one'srisk of heart disease. Specifi-cally, the study of nearly12,000 adults showed thatthose with poor oral hygienehad a 70 percent higher riskof heart disease than thosewho brushed twice daily andwere less likely to haveunhealthy gums. While failureto brush one's teeth may notbe in the same league assmoking when compared to aheart disease risk factor, thesimple habit of tooth-brushingcan make a difference in com-bating the number one causeof death in this country.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Vera Farmiga, 39; Geri Halliwell, 40; M. Night Shyamalan, 42; Michelle Yeoh, 50.HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Take another look at some of your ideas and you will find a way to bring the past, present and future together to form a new plan that can help you advance mentally, spiritually or finan-cially. Expand your interests and engage in attractive pros-pects. Don't walk away from the unique or unusual. Embrace new beginnings. Your numbers are 2, 6, 14, 20, 24, 36, 41.ARIES (March 21-April 19): Let the competition begin. You are ready for whatever comes your way and should engage in as much personal and profes-sional interaction as possible. Challenge someone special and a stronger bond will develop. Love is in the stars. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Avoid being caught wast-ing time. You may not feel like engaging in certain responsi-bilities, but the sooner you put things behind you, the better off you'll be. Don't argue when all that's required is taking care of business. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Check out what everyone else is giving before you promise to contribute. Keeping things equal will also help you avoid becom-ing disgruntled. Plan to socialize or get out and meet people who share your interests. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You will encounter creative opportunities if you participate. An unusual encounter will bring back memories you've been avoiding. Face your past so you can put your baggage behind you and move forward. Don't be shy; say what you think. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Embrace change and try new things. Helping others or an organization you believe in will lead to fabulous connections that can help you make life-altering decisions. Honest communica-tion will resolve issues that have held you back in the past. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You'll get far more accomplished if you work alone and at your own speed. An idea you have or a service you can provide has potential to become a prosper-ous venture. Don't let emotional problems rob you of a chance to excel. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): An opportunity to gather valu-able information and support is apparent, but you must do the legwork. Don't let laziness be your downfall. Travel will lead to advancement and give you a different perspective on moving forward. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You must be careful whom you trust, especially with secret information or financial deal-ings. Use your imagination, but don't overspend. Stick to what you know. This is not the time to explore new avenues; tying up loose ends is what's needed. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Push your way into the future with gusto. Good fortune can be yours if you utilize your skills to improve your lifestyle and financial future. Put more emphasis on money and forming partnerships. Consider services with a growing demand. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Stay away from anyone who wants to burden you with responsibilities. Protect what you have and move forward in a practical manner with no
regrets. Avoid involvement in an unorthodox lifestyle associated with emotional manipulation or guilt. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Look at your options. Strive to get out of repetitious situations that lead nowhere. A good bud-get along with your skills and knowledge will lead to a bet-ter future. An agreement with someone you love can help your situation.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Watch who you choose to be involved with. Personal prob-lems will develop if you rely on someone to help out. A hobby will ease your stress and can lead to additional income. Use intuition when dealing with an emotional relationship. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are a go-getter. You are smart and entertaining, and you attract positive attention.

Hanging out at the poolor the beach on a hot dayis a great way to beat theheat, but between havingfun and hanging out withfriends, most kids don'tthink much about watersafety —and they should. For people between theages of 5 and 24,drowning is the secondleading cause ofaccidental death, but itdoesn’t have to be thatway. Most water-relatedaccidents can be avoidedby knowing how to staysafe and following a fewsimple guidelines.
Take swimming les-
sons. If you swim a lot or
you’re around water a lot,it is vital to your overallsafety to take swimminglessons. Lessons are of-fered at a variety of loca-tions, like the YMCA,public pools, and at col-leges or universities. Bef-
ore you jump in the pool, make sure you know howto swim.
"Buddy up!" Alwaysswim with a partner, every time — whetheryou're swimming in abackyard pool or in alake. Even experiencedswimmers can becometired or get musclecramps, which mightmake it difficult to get outof the water. When peo-ple swim together, theycan help each other or go
for help in case of anemergency.
Take a CPR class. It'sgood to be prepared.Learning some life-saving skills, such asCPR and rescue tech-niques, can help you save
a life. A number of or-ganizations offer freeclasses for both begin-ning and experiencedswimmers. Checkwith the YMCAor local hospi-tal, or chapterof the RedCross.
Know your
limits. Swim-ming can be a lot offun — and you mightwant to stay in the wateras long as possible. If
you're not a good swim-mer or you're just learn-ing to swim, don't go inwater that's so deep youcan't touch the bottomand don't try to keep upwith skilled swimmers. That can be hard, espe-cially when your friendsare challenging you. Ifyou are a good swimmer
and have had lessons, keep an eye on friendswho aren't as comfortable
or as skilled as youare. If it seems
like they (oryou) are get-ting tired ora little un-easy, sug-
gest that youtake a break
from swimmingfor a while.
Swim in safe areas
only. It's a good idea to
swim only in places thatare supervised by a life-guard or an adult. In theevent that somethingdoes go wrong, life-guards are trained in res-cue techniques andadults can help if some-thing goes wrong.
Be careful about div-
ing and running at pool
areas. Diving injuriescan cause permanent spi-nal cord damage, paraly-sis, and sometimes evendeath. Protect yourself byonly diving in areas thatare known to be safe, such as the deep end of asupervised pool. If anarea is posted with "NoDiving" or "No Swim-ming" signs, pay atten-tion to them and don’tdive in that area.
Injuries also occur whenkids run around slick pool
areas. Make sure you Walkand don’t run!
Watch the sun. Sun re-flecting off the water oroff sand can intensify theburning rays. You mightnot feel sunburned whenthe water feels cool andrefreshing, but the painwill catch up with youlater — so remember toreapply sunscreen fre-quently and cover upmuch of the time.
Drink plenty of fluids.
Dehydration occurs whenthe amount of water leav-ing the body is greaterthan the amount beingtaken in. Our body needswater so it’s not a goodthing to be dehydrated.
Swimming can beloads of fun for you andyour friends, butremember safety comesfirst.
In 1964, Gene Rodenberry had anidea for a tv show, a western adven-ture set in outer space. At least,
that’s the way he pitched it to the net-works: “a Wagon Train to the stars.”
But tv executives were not jumping upand down for joy. Maybe it was Gene’sidea of having a crew made up of allraces. Or Gene’s love for presenting so-cial and political ideas. And they flat outhated the first pilot,in which JeffreyHunt starred asChristopher Pike, captain of the Star-ship Enterprise.
But there wassomething aboutthe show theyliked. They askedfor a second pilotshow to be pro-duced. This onefeatured WilliamShatner as Cap-tain James T. Kirkand Leonard Ni-moy as his VulcanFirst Officer,Spock. Nowthings began to click, and the showwent on the air in 1966.
At first the show had high ratings, but by the end of the first season, not asmany people were watching. NBC con-sidered dropping Star Trek from itsline-up. Fan letters saved the show fora while, but the series was cancelled af-ter three seasons.
NBC probably thought that was theend of cowboys in space, but if theydid, they were wrong, wrong, wrong!Perhaps the excitement of men landingon the moon in 1969 helped people getmore excited about life beyond theearth.
Like many shows, Star Trek actuallybecame more popular as re-runs than itwas during its original broadcast. The
show developed astrong cult fol-lowing. Filmationand ParamountStudios producedStar Trek: the
Animated Series, which aired onSaturday morn-ings for kids. Then Paramountbegan to makeStar Trek movies. One of the bestwas Star Trek II:
The Wrath of
Kahn, starringRicardo Mantal-ban as the evilKahn, a character
from the original tv series. Then came the spin-offs! First there
was Star Trek, the Next Generation, starring Patrick Stewart as CaptainJean-Luc Piccard. Next came Deep
Space Nine, starring Avery Brooks asCommander Benjamin Sisko. ThenVoyager, with Kate Mulgrew as Cap-tain Janeway, and finally, Enterprise,
with Scott Bacula as Captain JonathanArcher.
For a show that was nearly cancelledafter one season, Star Trek has donerather well. A cartoon, four spin-off se-ries on tv, 11 movies--and still count-ing!
Gene Rodenberry, who died in 1991,was a visionary. It was a tribute to thatvision when the first Space Shuttleorbiter was named Enterprise. Let’scelebrate Gene’s birthday on August19th by watching a favorte Star Trekepisode or movie.
Live long and prosper!
