My favourite speaker at the National Young Leaders Day was Winter. Winter is an 11 year old boy who has made the world better. At the age of 9 Winter found out that half of the world drinks dirty wa-ter. He worked out that one filter costs $50. He and his school decided to raise money to buy some water filters. He also sold two of his surfboards to raise money. Now 1500 more people drink clean fil-tered water because of what Winter did.

At first I thought how could a boy that young give clean, filtered water to more than 1500 people in the world who were originally drinking dirty water? This was an inspiration to me because it could mean that I could dome something great for the world, my community or my school. Winter has made me want to raise money for a charity so I can give to those who are less fortunate than me.

My second favourite speaker was Pipa Sheehan. She is a news reporter on channel ten. One of her quotes is “life is like a box of chocolates” and this is true because life IS like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. Another quote is “Great things never came from comfort zones”.

Overall my time at the National Young Leaders Day was very enjoyable, exciting and inspirational. Maybe someday you will be able to do something great but just remember first you have to Master the Little. A special thank you to Mrs S for taking her time and effort to take us to the National Young Leaders Day.

On Tuesday, 15 March, the Preps and Year Ones visited the Amaroo Environmental Education Centre.

Our day started with the excitement of a bus ride - a first

for some of our Preps. Upon arrival there was an air of un-

certainty as no-one had been to Amaroo before. We put

our bags under the old school building and were ready to

get started.

Cam, who was the Principal, explained to us how Amaroo

works. He told us of the rules and how we had to respect

our environment. Soon it was time to begin the activities.

Firstly we divided into four groups. Cam, Scotty, Mrs

Missingham and Miss Dowe each had a group. Cam had giv-

en us some very good instructions on how to erect our

tents, so off we went and put them up.

With that done, we were ready for a bush walk. We saw

some bull ants that were very angry, and a huge termite nest

in a tree. Cam showed us some spider holes and tapped

them to get the occupants to pop their heads out. A bandi-

coot had been digging looking for lunch and had left some

piles of dirt. We were also lucky enough to see a wallaby

footprint. Cam told us that there was a special tree that

they had saved from being cut down. We found out that it

was the home of some native bees. We also sat down on a

listening log. Cam had never had a group that had listened

so well and was seriously amazed at how focused we were.

With all that done, it was time to make our way back to our

tents, with a stop on the way to reapply our sunscreen. It

was exciting to get back to our tents but ... Oh no! Oh no! Oh no! Oh no! Ms

Dowe’s tent had fallen down! Mrs Missingham could not

stop laughing!

After morning tea, we took part in rotational activities.

There were three different things to do. Miss Dowe joined

us in pretending to be campers. We made her lots of pre-

tend hot chocolate with marshmallows. Mrs Missingham

took us to dig some holes for the toilets. Cam said that

they are called latrines. We dug them and pretended to use

them. (A favourite with the boys!) Cam took us for bird

watching and we found out why the birds were squawking

madly. They were scared of the puppets placed near the

trees for the older children’s activities. Some of us said

‘Pop-ups’ instead of ‘Puppets’. Oops!

We were certainly ready for lunch when the time came. Our final activity was completing some puzzles in

our tents. Then it was time to pack the tents away and end our visit. Just before we left we were treated

to a special show. Cam put a pear on a long stick and held it up to the possum box on the tank stand.

Roger the possum came out an munched on his treat.

Sadly, it was time to leave Amaroo until next year. Cam said we were the most awesome group of children

he had ever seen. He wanted to keep us but Miss Dowe said that she would be lost without us, so he let

us get on the bus for the trip home. Some of us fell asleep on the bus but arrived back at school full of

excitement from an amazing day. Miss Dowe and Mrs Missingham were so very proud of us. A fantastic

day for everyone!
